Charmer?
I'm not sure how I feel about the Mirror Pool being in this, but, eh, I've gotten rather good at selective headcanoning.
…I can't help but notice that Shayle never actually found out where all those skeletons and the smell of rotten meat came from. Methinks this bodes not well.
Also, did you actually get the new bit into Chapter 8? I didn't see it.Thanks for reading O. Hinds, I hope you enjoyed it

Yeah, I was questioning if I should use that or actual cloning tech, but I eventually decided on the Pool.
Yeah...that last report she didn't listen to, it may or may not explain it.
I did, but it was only a little part. I swear if I forgot to save it...Okay, I did. Like I said, it wasn't much in the way of description, but this is supposed to be the description of the river. If you're asking about a different part I was supposed to add, I'm sorry that I've forgotten.
The cart was crashed in a large gash through the Wasteland around us, giving us some good cover, and the ground was much looser. My hooves sank a few inches into the sand with each step, and I couldn't help but wonder what had caused such a scar to form. Looking both ways, the cut through the earth extended as far as I could see, from the horizon to the towers of New Oatleans.
Ahhh, I see. I'd searched with the assumption that she knew what it was. :)
Wait, but the river flows into New Oatleans from the east, not the northeast? If so, I'll need to make a minor alteration to the map. While I'm at it, will there be enough land south of the river between it and the coast and mountains for you, or do I need to see about adding more?
Yes, I am enjoying the story.

Might I inquire as to the reason? I'm still trying to decide which I think would be better.Yeah, I was questioning if I should use that or actual cloning tech, but I eventually decided on the Pool.

You're map shows the river perfectly, don't worry about it. The reason it says 'East' rather than 'Northeast' in the story is because Shayle perspective. "Everything that way is West, everything that way is South, etc etc". So yeah, sorry for the confusion there.O. Hinds wrote:re the river:CamoBadger wrote:O. Hinds wrote:

It was an interesting thought process that I went through while in bed one night.
I didn't know if I would be able to get away with using the Mirror Pool, mostly because it seemed like only Pinkie knew about it in the show, but she did hear about it from a legend, so I thought 'hey, maybe a lot of fillies and colts know about it, but just ignore it when they grow up'. Even then, I was questioning whether to use that or other cloning technology. I didn't know if it would really be acceptable to use the Pool in the machines, and fully expected someone to call me out on it, so I spent a while trying to think of why it might work better than traditional cloning tech.
Then I thought that since they already have this pool in the MLP universe, what would be the point of them trying to create new technology? Instead, why couldn't they just find a way to move the magical water somewhere else and put it inside a machine for repeated and consistent use? So that was where I started working it all out, and eventually came up with the system. The actual pods used for cloning weren't shown, but my brain went through a whole system of how to make it work. Anyways, basically I just thought of it as 'if you already have it don't buy a new one', and thought of it as more of testing the magical properties of the Pool and how it could work to sustain population in the absence of the other gender, and less of 'see if you can make these machines work'.
As for the mental degradation of the clones, that was more of 2 things.
1) GAAAAAAARYYYYYYYYYYYY
2) Watching the episode with the Mirror Pool, those damn Pinkies never said anything except FUN FUN FUN FUN, so I took that, ran with it, and came up with the little trait of mental degradation. That's the same way I got their insatiable need to re-clone themselves, which was shown when the Pinkies wouldn't stop doing it.
So yeah, maybe a bit of a stretch there, but that was all my thought process on the matter.

Earlier in that chapter, she refers to New Oatleans as being to the southeast. Still, thinking back, what you describe does seem to be her general pattern. Thanks!CamoBadger wrote:

- I was asking more along the lines of "Why did you decide to make the mirror pool exist in the FoE universe?", but, having thought about it, I think that it works. It probably wouldn't have been all that difficult to stop ponies from trying to use it during the war; it does have some big limitations. Still, the MAS probably experimented with it... ah, which is where the machines came from. The MAS built the machines as part of its own experiments, discovered that they weren't really useful (as far as the MAS knew; if one tossed aside ethics, one could use the pods to mass-produce souls for use in soul engineering; I assume that this was not done partly because soul engineering saw such limited work and partly because even Goldenblood found the idea a bit too bad), and abandoned the project. Stable-Tec got their hooves on the machines, thought that the Stable ponies, given how much time they had on their hooves, might be able to find something that the MAS (and, no doubt, the OIA) missed, and set up 81. 81 proceeded to not actually fix the problem, which almost certainly somehow led, eventually, to the atrium full of bones and the far-too-fresh smell of rotting meat. Am I correct? If not, and if it isn't spoilery, what was the actual sequence of events?

I likely won't be revisiting the Stable, since there is really no reason to go back there, but this is the basic premise of what happened:
No, they didn't fix the problem, and resorted to using a supply of semen that was given just in case the tech didn't work. It worked for a while, and they ended up basically ignoring the clones while still allowing them to live with the others for the most part. Well, the clones kinda overpopulated themselves with their cloning obsession and soon the stable couldn't produce enough food or water for everyone. The non-clones decided that they had to kill the clones in order to survive, but when security started putting them down the clones noticed and started fighting back. Since at this point there were more clones, and they had access to the machines to basically create an infinite number of themselves, they won out and killed everyone else in the Stable.
The one thing that the non-clones did manage to do before dying was mess with the power to surge out the cloning machines, rendering them inoperable, which is why there are only 12 or 13 Sandy's left when Shayle arrives.

Not going back? Huh; I guess that I misread the foreshadowing.
Ah; I'm not sure it was made clear that there were so few. That could just be Shayle's perspective, I suppose. That still doesn't explain the lingering smell of rotting meat, though... I mean, would the smell really still be there after more than a century?

Nah, Shayle and Co won't be going back there.
I never said the bodies were there for more than a century. Try a few years. And since the Stable air is all internal (from what I remember), that smell doesn't exactly fade.

The smell ought to fade eventually, though, as the air handling equipment works through it.

Perhaps this would be more useful than an as-read thought log. I planned to read it yesterday, but I was too tired and fell asleep early.
- Spoiler:
"I didn’t think it would, but I was actually surprised when she said ‘yes’."
The context of 'it' in this sentence is confusing.
"I didn’t’ know exactly what to request from the Sandy’s, but I thought back to the parts we already gathered and asked if they had anything similar."
Extra apostrophe after 'didn't'.
"Not sure if serious" is funny, but I don't think it is a proper sentence in prose.
Also of note, as you write Felix, the story includes more thought than descriptions of the environment, compared to Shayle's POV.
Or I'm crazy.
I found it odd that Shayle can't read Equestrian or numbers, yet she knows what numbers are. She seems to have disproportionate knowledge of other things, yet she can't read.
Shayle wasn't really fair to Minx, if she had refused to shoot, she would have died. Probably everyone else, too. It might have been a test of loyalty on her part as well. Everyone was tested there.
ATR has the most firmly established mental map of any FO:E fic I've read, btw.
Also, GARRRY!

Re: Fallout Equestria: All That Remains
No as-I-read-it review this time, fell asleep about four or five times while trying to read it (because I was exhausted) and thus didn't keep track. Anyway, good chapter!
The reason I fell asleep so many times was because I was up until 2am after working a 6am-3pm and having woke up at 5am yesterday morning, so a long day of being awake.
After I awoke at 8am, I couldn't properly keep myself awake and kept falling asleep until I'd gotten the proper amount.
Hell, I hadn't even noticed I was going to fall asleep, I just did - computer left on and everything.
Anyway, good chapter, yeah. I liked that the Stable was an 108 interpretation along with the mirror pool episode being used. I like how you intertwined the two together.
The fight with Seer/Charmer was good, well handled with use of cover and such. I knew that Tinker would be joining them too.
Uh, don't think I really have anything else to say. Just that I enjoyed these Sandy clones.

What's so odd about it? She's not illiterate because of a lack of sufficient intelligence, she's illiterate because she never learned. I must have thought over that little bit I wrote six times, but couldn't decide whether it made sense or not. Shayle isn't dumb, though certainly uneducated. The first conception of numbers I remember was in written form, if that matters.O. Hinds wrote:

It's all good, I've done that many times before, and I don't blame you at all.
Thanks, it took a while to decide if I would use the Mirror Pool or not, so I'm glad it turned out well.
Yup, another filly for Charmer and Seer to take care of. Welcome to Wasteland Daycare.

@Differing writing: Nope, you're not crazy. I try to put more internal thought into Felix's than world description, and vice versa to Shayle's perspective.
@Numbers/Int.: She's good at picking things up, like figuring out the terminal (even though it wasn't locked when she got to it). As for knowing what numbers look like, O. Hinds hit it right on the head.
@Shayle & Minx: No, she really wasn't fair about it, and I'm glad that someone caught on to what I was trying to have Minx say about her side of it. Yes, she chose to shoot Doc, which in itself seems like something horrible, but like she said; someone was going to die there, and she had to choose who. As for testing Minx's loyalty, it was partly that as well, but you'll see more about why in later chapters. So yes, Shayle might have been too harsh, but on the other hand she was just told that Minx is the one who killed Doc, and on top of that she was still upset with Minx for being happy after burning down Shanty.
@Map: Really? Thanks!

I've been wanting to write chapter nineteen of Broken Bonds since having gotten half way through eighteen, but my brain then turns around to me and goes: AHHH SHUDDUP YER FACE - every damn time I go to do it.

Re: Fallout Equestria: All That Remains
Well, I just finished the new chapter. I'm afraid that I'm rather tired and not in possession of a tremendously large amount of time, so I don't have all that much to say. The chapter seemed good, though.
- Spoiler:
I did, however, notice a larger number of minor punctuation errors, generally involving commas or semicolons. Also:
"My pistol hit the sand of the riverbed with"
When did she learn that it was a riverbed?
"while Seer climbed back out of the riverbed"
And again.
"Once again, nothing happened on the zebra side of the river."
And again.
Also, I'm suspecting that Shayle's mother isn't quite so dead as she was told…

Oh, she learned that when Minx told her it was in the last chapter. Sorry 'bout that.O. Hinds wrote:Well, I just finished the new chapter. - Ah, I see it now. It's only mentioned briefly, and I missed it last time. Why doesn't Shayle remark on it at all, though?

Re: Fallout Equestria: All That Remains
Either today or tomorrow, I will read the new chapter.
Hopefully it gets me in the mood to write after that.
