There's three reasons as to why they could want to, two of which are why they theoretically should.
-Caesars Stand is one of the prime locations where Remnant soldiers are housed. If you manage to storm the area with 20-30 fully suited rangers, you would likely win such an engagement. -An eye for an eye. I know that Shanty wasn't all that much of an important town, otherwise it wouldn't have been a shanty town. Still, the sheer fact that the zebras not only went and burnt down Shanty, but they have now ALSO gone and assassinated a member of another pony settlement and had a firefight that cost them a good few of their guards. If that group was to be allied with the Steel Rangers, there's a pretty big reason right there alone. Even if they aren't allies, unless they're against each-other then there's still the saying: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Mutual short term alliance to fuck someone up isn't unheard of or uncommon.
The Remnant just dealt two blows to pony settlements in the space of what, three or four days? Five or six pushing it?
That says to me that they're a true nuisance, a threat that needs stopping. If they were to be tracked back to C.S, which could happen by following any blood trails Shayle may have left behind -- or even with general intelligence on where these zebra are coming from, it would make a nice big target to try and cut the source of these attacks.
The Steel Rangers have the firepower they'd require and the other group have at least one functioning airship. I know that the Scorpions tried to assassinate the pilot, but what's to say there could only be one pilot or that it was even the pilot that they'd gotten in the first place? They were unsure on their information and the initial info turns out to be squat anyway.
It's very, very possible for it to happen in this respect.
-Lastly? All That Remains. It's a story about all that remains. We've seen Shayle lose two homes now, but what if she was to lose a third? She's lost her father and now she's found someone who we and she are sure is her mother, but what if she was to lose her too? Or worse, Felix?
What if at the end of the day, all that remains is a broken, burnt down town that she called home for a short while... no longer having any family? What if in the end, she's all that's left? All that remains?

Google defines semantics (2) as the meaning of a word, phrase or sentence.
basically i'm saying that though technically you are correct in calling it a gunship instead of an airship, to laymans terms its the same principal with some slight differences.
Both fly through the sky, one is intended for war / combat where-as the other isn't. To me, the difference is next to nothing because of this.
as such the difference to me is just semantics.

But "gunship" and "airship" have quite different meanings.

Now, both of those definitions are a bit narrow, certainly when dealing with FoE, but I still don't think the words have overlapping meanings.

I think when talking FOE, as long as the general message is put across something like that isn't really half as important if its in idle banter.
If I was -writing- the story myself and misused the terms, it'd be different, of course.
However, in casual chat about what could and in my mind, should happen, such strictness on technicalities shouldn't matter if the meaning is still put across.

With the thing on what Shayle thought of the mare (the 'allowing rape' thing), truly she did assault the colts, but as you suggested Shayle doesn't even think about that kind of thing. Her exposure to her father and few grown mares makes her think that only stallions are capable of such a thing, so it's her ignorance of the situation. Just thought I'd clear that up a little ^-^

A little surprised Shayle doesn't see the appeal. She always seemed the type who would just want to disappear at times, unless of course she's talking about this situation in particular.
I may also be confused by the wording, I'm assuming she means why they were appealing to others. Knowing Shayle she could be confused to why they appeal to her.
About the rest of the chapter... Again this one leaned a bit more towards Felix And I've stated I don't really like him all that much. At least not as a main character. I hope Shayle starts taking the reigns again soon.
Now Seer's death, I wish I could break down things better all I can say is I love the way you presented it.
I'm very glad you didn't go with guts strewn everywhere that I thought the events were leading to. I think the way you chose to do it was more impactful because of it.
Feel sorry that Shayle didn't get the foalsitter position, the Shayle I knew before the story (Kinda feel like I don't know this one as well.) would have have loved that.
Speaking of the positions I'm not quite sure why the guard position was available and the foal sitter one wasn't Xion openly admitted Shayle wouldn't be very good starting out, (Of course he added that she would get better with time.) so why couldn't she learn how to interact with the foals in a way that made them more comfortable? Seems much more dangerous to put someone who isn't very skilled in the guard position then it would be to put them in the foalsitter one.
I'm going to assume that Xion wanted her in that position so her skills could be groomed in a way that would make her more useful to him down the line.

Xion vouched for her abilities while admitting she's new and in need of training, but shows promise.
No-one has seen her haggle goods yet though, and if she didn't want to be doing it, you think she'd really push for the best deal for C.Stand?

So, after testing whether using my old netbook for reading before going to sleep would actually get me reading with the prologue and first chapter, it turns out it does.
Looking back, I didn't know what to think of your story until chapter three. Going through it now with differing respect for the type of darkness and themes shown in it, I greatly enjoy the prologue and first chapter. I guess I change more than I thought.
And I still want to give Shayle a hug, she's probably the most sympathy-inducing character I've ever read.
Now to keep this story from seeping into my thoughts again and disrupting my afternoon classes... or not...
