On a totally unrelated if someone was doing a re-read right now and started today reading a chapter a day, aside from number of Blackjack kills are there any other statistics I should note down as I read of "useless facts that people always wondered but were to lazy to check for themselves"

I might do this, actually. Summer break permitting.
"Party kills" would be nice, but approximate, because of the centrality on Blackjack.(Not a bad thing.)
"Ammo expended" is impossible. Sad.
"Shotguns lost/acquired" would be funny.
"Total companions"
"Companions lost"
"Memory orbs experienced"
"Violent encounters"
"Weapon progression"
"Factions encountered"
"Times saved from death"
"Potions drank"
"Named locations found"
"Conspiracies"(I kid)
Just to name a few. Spike

Few good suggestions, my current list with Noodle and Ketchup's suggestions

Blackjack kills
Blackjack says she is not smart pony
Memory orbs
Potions drank or just times shot (There's a running joke that Littlepip is 100% lead based on how many times she was shot) so I'm not sure if I'll just note wounds or also included healing. I think both.

Locations found I'm iffy on.

well actually now that i think about it, there is the legate so I would assume the zebras are also taking the roll of Caesars legion so Latin kinda makes sense in that aspect... I would still have prefered it if they spoke Swahili though but I guess this will do.

Random question: Does the starmetal sword absorb/sends to EoS the souls that it kills? This kind of reminds me of the Kingdom Hearts II scenario.

I think it's yes and yes.
The EoS is this particular brand of Hoofington starmetal.

I thought the wisps went into the metal in the sword. Stars work in mysterious ways, though, so this may have the same end effect (that is to say souls that go into Hoofington starmetal toys all go to the Eater).

My guess would be that the absorbed souls stay with the sword (perhaps strengthening its fraction of power in some way), rather than being transmitted to the Eater of Soul's main body. For all the shards of the Eater to still be connected as one entity just seems unlikely, to me at least.
If Somber decided to do that though, I wouldn't complain.

The sword attracts souls, but it can't destroy them. It can only consume a soul like its own. If the metal is destroyed then the souls stuck inside are free.

Also, thanks so much for the reviews. They really perk me up. :)

My guess would be EoS is the Starmetal. Not limited by physical continuity, think hivemind without central entity, or a bulk of virus mass that together comprises sentience. So, the sword is a live part of EoS, like an organ. The souls go to the sword, but that means they go to EoS.

So best bet of Project Horizons is that it's a moon drop. I'm guessing if everything else is screwed i.e. EC101 breaks like Trueblood feared, Hoofington would launch like a spaceship, crash into the moon, and try to pull the moon back to Equestria. Or I could be crazy.

I have a different worry.
Hoofington would not crash, it would fly away. The space program brought a lot of moon rock. The deposit of starmetal (EOS) under the Hoof is immense. Together they'd make a truly fearsome propellant, although what would be left behind, down below, after a launch like this...

Somber wrote:The sword attracts souls, but it can't destroy them. It can only consume a soul like its own. If the metal is destroyed then the souls stuck inside are free.
Huh, okay... that explains a whole lot of my curiosity about the Necropolis, and why there are bits of soul drifting around intact there rather than being consumed by the Eater of Souls. I assume "like its own" means a star's soul, like the one that spawned Celestia and Luna, since that's the only thing we've explicitly seen the EoS consume.

Which raises the question of why it's collecting mortal souls, then. Maybe that's just a side effect of its presence, the way a planet attracts floating debris, but they obviously must help in some way since blood sacrifice was crucial to the Zebra attempt to raise the Eater of Souls. Perhaps it can consume a soul that's resonating with its own frequency. If so, twisting a soul to match its frequency would certainly represent corruption of the highest order. (And speaking of Nurse Candy...)

On the other hoof, from BJ's star dream:
This time, however, as ponies and zebras died, not all their tiny motes returned above. Many, a small fraction, but still so many, were snared in the spider’s web and whisked to the dark heart, there to scream the dark note. Waiting. Tempting another star to fall and be devoured so that the heart could be freed.

Perhaps the soul doesn't need to be alive to get corrupted...

So, is that corruption what makes someone become a Harbinger? Or does joining the religion begin the process? And is humming the EoS's tone the cause of corruption, or its symptom?

swicked wrote:So, that tiny flake of metal BJ tested with the moon rock, that had sucked up someone's soul? All by itself? 'Cause that's impressive. After it was destroyed BJ described it as heading off in some specific direction, I think... I wonder if it's at all possible to determine who's soul that was from that fairly vague hint.
There's two main possibilities. The motes were heading west from their location in East Hoofington, so they were either heading for the EoS (or Necropolis) at the Core, or for the site of her death at the Star House.

swicked wrote:I now wonder about all those memory motes in the cavern beneath Hoofington that BJ met the cyberdemon in. My original theory was something along the lines of, after star metal is destroyed, it's drawn toward the eater of souls and was somehow getting stuck in that cavern. I thought it might have been moonstone deposits or that they were just close enough to the eater at that point.
That still might be the case. If you imagine the EoS as a sort of 'gravity well' for souls, you can imagine the Necropolis as its accretion disk. Except that it can't eat them, so they just stay there, drifting close to its surface, and if you're standing in the Necropolis, the EoS is just a few feet underfoot... Hell, for that matter, the Necropolis might itself be the Zebras' star metal mine.

You know, I just realized that my mental image of the Necropolis is basically the planet Phaaze from Metroid Prime 3 -- complete with the drifting specks and creepy music.
