Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
That's what third parties were invented for, fences, traders and the like. But I'll buy that a Ghoul (Can't think of the word) who never ages and needs little might be content to sit, letting the days bleed into each other because knowing one is immortal but kill able means you can outlive most threats and Snipes might have been content to sit in that bar for another two hundred years were EC-1101 not to literally fall into his lap.O. Hinds wrote:
Yes, but I imagine that Snips's price is quite high. Sure, he could have made a fortune, Blackjack found him in the Mortuary; for one reason or another, he didn't want to, it seems. And, while he may have sold a few others over the decades, I'd imagine that their owners aren't talking about them. Would you tell the Wasteland "I have with me an incredibly rare talisman that allows me to pretty much ignore Enervation and thus get with little opposition some of the best salvage out there"? Snips might also not want it known so that powerful individuals don't seek him out for his knowledge.
Ahh D&D, the stories I can tell, the stories any long term D&D player can tell about what parties can get up to and what they can cause to themselves sin simple short sighted thinking greed driven thinking.WavemasterRyx wrote:

She was going to save the wasteland, she still had a dream and still had hope. I'll forgive her for forgetting being stuck under a cabinet dieing of dehydration. I know the feeling of knowing without question that at this time... that this day... that I was going to die. I know that feeling and the only thing that matters is the present, the past and the future become unimportant in the simple struggle for survival.swicked wrote:

@stealth suit, I thought it was zebra inspired, not zebra made. what point would a stealth suit be if they already have cloaks that do the same job, only better(actual invisibility) just seems a little redundant.

@glory vs xanthe, like Cptadder said, "Glory has a drive, a purpose a goal, a general sense of goodness an innocence, an ability.
And a dream for tomorrow" Glory's whole purpose of coming down to the surface was because she had a goal to do better. Xanthe is just sort of at the wrong place at the wrong time, Glory also developed really quickly. also I see her whole "cursed" rant is going to get annoying pretty quickly.

Well... heck, both of theirs was misguided, but Glory's was less violent, at least.
She's a craftsmare. remember when rampage asked what she did? Remember when she gave instructions on how to deal with a missile? the battlefield doesnt exactly seem like a place for a craftsmare to want to go. Skills would go to waste.

Xanthe had no dream or hope, she had an idea at best. She wanted to stop the Star Maiden but she has nothing like the drive of Glory. She had no plan, she had nothing like Glory's planning ability or drive. Xanthe wakes up decides to stop the Star Maiden and hopes for the best. Meanwhile Glory is active in her goal, she has plans and steps and unlike Xanthe she knows each one of her actions is aimed to meet her goal.swicked wrote:Cptadder wrote:She was going to save the wasteland, she still had a dream and still had hope. No no no, when Blackjack first was shown to have this ability and we started talking about her taking a bite of a gun somber came on and was all "No! Something something something it has to all fit in her mouth."
So she's not going to take a bite of a gun. I think.
That or I've been juked. :what:

Just did a quick little read. Xanthe was there looking for rampage with the other zebras when blackjack came stumbling along. she wasn't out to kill blackjack or she would have. instead she had a bullet scrape her hip and she peed herself.

Think about who your talking about again... Blackjack
Not a smart Pony Blackjack
Besides eating rounds is quite safe assuming you eat the bullet first and dump the powder, long as your not biting into the igniter your okay. Assuming you can eat brass to begin with.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Okay, let's give this a shot.
Overall, great chapter. I liked the reveals regarding Rampage, and I think that the MoI stuff rings true. Obviously, I'm running with the feeling of WTF Blackjack, but at least she seems to be thinking about how she is acting a little bit. Really, the Silver Spoon move just doesn't feel like something she would normally do, and I hope this sort of thing won't become a pattern.
The action in the second half was good; I loved the smooze, and it really did a good job at seeming a credible threat even against a crazily overpowered party. That it was a sort of elemental force was nice, since there are plenty of schemers and plots already. The attack of the soul jars was set up wonderfully; I really liked Cerberus's role in setting it off. The bit with the sword was good--the ability to harm soul jars fits perfectly, but I wasn't thinking "BJ, why aren't you using the pointy stick made out of soul-eating metal" the whole fight.
As for the stealth suit: I never played NV, so I don't have very strong feelings coming in. I do think that it could be a nice way of developing Xanthe. In some ways, it feels like the perfect match; both were zebras separated from their kind, cursed, but it seems with different ways of dealing with it. I'm a little surprised the suit was playing so nicely with everypony, given who it must have been before the operation.
Anyway. Thank you Somber, editors. If this is what happens when a chapter ends up ~25% longer than you intend, I think you need have no worries on that front. I felt the pacing was good, with no scenes dragging, all while hitting the points you needed to. There's a reason I've stuck with this for nearly a million words, and it sure isn't because there's extraneous fluff.
- Spoiler:
“Willow! I can explain!
Okay… I really can’t explain, but I didn’t do this! I wouldn’t do
this, I mean… I’m pretty sure I didn’t do this. I can’t say I’ve never
killed somepony while out of it, but…” I stammered, pointing back behind me
with a bloody hoof. “I was just in Mortuary. My friend… erm… a
griffin… ah… Mr. Shears can prove it!”
Smooth, BJ. Let’s hope you aren’t
relying on your quick thinking and clearly high speech allocation to get you
out of this one.
“No blood spattered on you. Just a
bit on your hoof from stepping in the pool.” She stepped close and slowly
lowered her hoof towards Tulip’s shattered head. “While I know you
probably could do a wound like this, it would have been messy. Bits of
blood and bone all over the place. Your clothes are still clean.”
She peered down at the slain ghoul with a little groan. “Damn…
Tulip was a nice girl. Hopeless merchant, but nice.”
Well that was quick and tidy. Glad we
aren’t seeing some kind of setup here and we’ll probably be minimally derailed.
“’Softheart and I were assigned to catch
the Angel of Death serial killer,’ she said as she trotted away from the body a
bit and took a seat.”
Nice! I like where this is going.
The ghoul rolled her eyes.
“Because she was fucking ministry. Fuck… don’t you get it?
Back then, if you were with a ministry, there were a million special
rules about what we were supposed to do. We caught Nurse Candy, then
handed her right over to Fluttershy who ‘Pinkie Pie promised’ us that they’d
make her better.” She hissed in disgust. “Three months later she
was out and doing it again. Only this time, she knew how we’d caught her
and changed her habits. Softheart drove herself nuts trying to stop her;
she loved kids. And the Angel loved toying with us. The Angel would
leave notes on the bodies of her victims to me and Softheart.”
Yeah, Fluttershy never really was up to
handling stuff like this, huh? I wonder whether this was pre or post leaking
megaspell tech to the zebras.
“Ghouls always have one whiny story from
when they were alive. Promised I’d never share mine. They’re always
so pathetic.”
Gotta love genre-savvy side characters!
“Not that bad. Now get out of my
mane. I need to get Tulip cremated and tell his mayorship to clean up the
mess.” I felt like she’d slugged me. Mysteries! Potential
answers! How could she pass that up?
Just because everyone you hang out with
is immortal or quasi-suicidal—or both—doesn’t mean everyone is, BJ! You need to
get out more.
I’d like to think there were different
levels of awkward. Saying your mom’s flank is perfectly sexy when she turns
out to be standing behind you, for example, is a beginner’s level of awkward.
Then there’s trying to convince the pony you love to be your special
somepony, only to discover they’re taken, not interested, only interested in
being friends, or that they would be interested if you were somepony else.
That’s a nice middling sort of awkward. Then there’s finding out
that the filly you thought you’d killed in a psychopathic rage is still alive,
badly battered, possibly crippled, and utterly scared to death of you.
Oh, no. What’s going to happen to
balance this out? My guess is either the Styg or Shears, it will be bad, and it
will be Blackjack’s fault (probably not really, but come on, you know she’ll
think it is).
“Well, aren’t you a hero,” the yellow
pegasus said sarcastically to the zebra. Then she glanced over at
Stygius, saw his disapproval, and blinked and forced a grin. “I mean, way
to go!” Stygius just sighed and looked away. Psychoshy’s grimace
melted into a worried, uncertain frown.
Yay! Possible mollifying influence is
here faster than I ever would have expected.
“Well, I… it’s not my specialty at all.
But… yes.” She looked nervously at her hooves, tapping them
together. “That actually isn’t a rocket at all; it’s a missile that was
fired from Dawn Bay. Shorter range, flat flight path, and more difficult
to intercept.”
Well, looks like we’ve got ourselves a
cruise missile in this case.
“I
sighed, then smiled and patted Xanthe’s shoulder. “Right! You’re
coming with us. You’re our resident balefire missile specialist.”
“Huh?”
Xanthe blinked. “But I… I can’t… I mean… shouldn’t… I mean…”
I just smiled at her as she stammered on for a minute or two and then
said in a whimper, “I’m the most cursed zebra ever.”
“Yup,” I
said as I put a hoof around her shoulder.””
What’s
the word for volunteering someone else for a suicide mission? Right after they
did you a huge favor?
“Associating
with a damned dirty stripe! Damn this combat inhibitor!” Cerberus snarled.
I love
you too, Charlton.
“So,
that’s me, Lacunae, Rampage, Psychoshy, Stygius, Mr. Shears, Nurse Graves,
Cerberus, Xanthe…”
“I
understand that you’re going to Hightower. I’d like to offer the
assistance of my employee, Carrion.”
That
still only gets us to ten. Who does a heist with only ten? On the other hand,
at least we haven’t heard too much
detail for the plan (does it count if we don’t know much of the plan because
there isn’t much of a plan), so they at least have that going for them.
“For the
first time since I’d seen alicorns, I saw one that didn’t look like some cheap
knockoff of Luna or Celestia. The golden silk dress with burgundy panels
she wore was what I imagined a sunset should look like. Her brushed and
curled mane seemed to blow in that ghostly wind. The traces of lip gloss
and the golden glitter in the corners of her eyes gave off just the right
sparkle. Burgundy ribbons and the gold wire that I’d traded to Tulip had
been woven around her hooves. They’d even fashioned a tiara for her from
the wire. The collected ghouls stared on in joy as she stood there before
us all. If Celestia were the sun and Luna the moon, Lacunae could be
sunrise and sunset.”
…Wow. How
long did they have to do that? I’m impressed.
“Because
it empowers the part of her that is Twilight Sparkle. The self-important
ego of the mare that became the Goddess still remembers petty slights made
against her many years before the war. And so long as the Goddess feels
misery, doubt, and self recrimination, Twilight cannot assert herself or
threaten Trixie’s domination.” She closed her eyes and sighed.
“Sometimes I think she’s stripped away so much of Twilight that there’s
more of her in me than in the Goddess herself.”
An
interesting way of explaining the Goddess’ personality’s dominance by Trixie. I
just wish we knew more about Gestalt to try to recognize any behavior from
there.
“I’ve
been waiting an eternity to get up there.”
…I see
what you did there.
It must
have shown on my face, because Shears snorted, then dug out some .308 shell
casings and tossed them on the conference table. “Please. I’ve
taken steps for that. These talismans will ward off the Enervation for
several hours. I suggest you not lose them, or you’ll get an intimate
lesson in what happened to everypony in the Core.”
Cool,
figured they’d need something to take care of this. And of course this sets up
some nice possibilities for the future. Just wish I could remember the
high-enervation areas right now. There were the tunnels, but I’m not sure there’s
a reason to go back to them. The Core, perhaps, but there are still other
defenses keeping that from being an immediate possibility.
‘Risk
your life… risk your friends lives… come and get me… and then I’ll send you
somewhere even more dangerous.’
“Friends” needs an apostrophe.
Then I
blinked and slowly straightened. Rampage noticed at once. “What?
What is it? You’ve got that look, Blackjack.”
“What
look?” I asked with a grin.
“That
‘crazy idea’ look that means peeling ghouls and wearing their skins or
something like that,” Rampage said warily.
Was it Rampage that coined “shooty look,” too?
Nurse
Graves looked back with a worried frown. “Are you sure about bringing
her?”
“What?” I
asked with a grin. “She’s coming along, isn’t she? She’s happy to
help her friend.”
Aaaand we’re up to eleven!
“It’s
your soul,” Mr. Shears said from the middle of the group. “A pony can
continue living so long as they have the tiniest fragment of their soul.
Without it, we’re mindless animals at best. We might have a brain,
but we would have no will to suppress our aggressive urges.” His cloudy
eyes glanced behind us. “Retaining one’s soul is easier when you are
alive because your living flesh has a strong natural bond with your spirit.”
Well, if
there was ever a doubt, it’s gone now.
“Get yer
stinkin’ hooves off me you damned dirty ghoul!” Cerberus shouted as he
struggled to keep aloft with three ghouls clamped down on his limbs.
And the
whole thing this time.
Yet while
she wasn’t fighting near Rampage’s level, her hooves were keeping the undead
attackers at bay with strange flashing kicks and stomps that allowed her to
deflect the ghoul’s snapping fangs.
Should
probably be “ghouls’ snapping fangs.”
Shears
had pulled from his robe a pair of large, wicked-looking magic-powered hedge
trimmers. Every time a ghoul lunged forward, the clippers snapped, and
more than one ghoul fell back missing a leg or head.
Seems
Snips has taken a level in badass; I suppose he would have to though, so no
special points apart from still being not-entirely-dead. I like this fighting
style, even if this is probably his ideal set of opponents.
“I might
need your help. Nothing major… certainly nothing that needs to involve
Goldenblood. Just need… some friendly advice. Right… good.
Please take care of yourself, Twilight.”
I do love
that she’s keeping some trace of independence. Chose a wonderful time for it,
too. Then again, of all the Ministry Mares, she’s the one I could most see
wishing to build some walls between herself and the OIA (other than for
personal reasons). Especially since Image was already kind of integrated with the other ministries.
“But the
only alternative was to give up.
I
couldn’t do that. Not ever.”
Now Blackjack, that superpower is
already taken by Timmiverse Batman. No stealing.
“The
radiation was clicking very slowly; just one rad per second.”
Wow,
Rad-X and Radaway are damn good stuff.
“Like… I
wanna go home. I wanna go home right now, Tiara!”
Oh,
Silver Spoon better not die here! Blackj—er, Diamond Tiara, you better keep your best friend alive.
“I looked
at the gray pitted steel of my forelegs. “Yeah. Besides, what could
we have done if we had known? Bring a couple tons of gelatin?” I
gave a weak grin to the others. Most of them looked decidedly unamused,
but Rampage didn’t let me down.”
“Smirking
back at me, she tapped her cheek thoughtfully. “Acidic pony gelatin
monsters. Delicious as they are jiggly.” That got a few more
nervous smiles.”
…Okay that was actually a little different
than what I had expected.
“-
“Tiara! Talk to me. Tell me what’s going on? You found my
glasses, but… but everything seems wrong. It doesn’t make sense.”
She gave a nervous little smile. “It’s a joke, right? A joke
on those blank flanks, right?” Her voice cracked as she reached up to
touch her glass-streaked face. I just looked at her shamefully as she
begged, “Please tell me it’s all a joke?””
Why yes,
Blackjack, what you did was bad, and
you should feel bad. You really
should have seen this coming. I get that you can’t entirely keep your hooves
clean while accomplishing what you need to, but come on! You at least should be
able to recognize when you’re
dirtying them—ahead of time instead of always in hindsight. This is (one of the
many, many, mmmmaaaaaaannnnnnnyyyyyy)
reasons you are always unhappy.
“It’s not
a joke, Silver Spoon,” I said quietly. “I… I don’t even know who Diamond
Tiara was. I just remembered how you controlled those others when we
first met. I needed your help… and I hoped I could get it without you
realizing that I was lying to you.”
THANK YOU. Now think
about what you did. Later, when it won’t get you killed. And preferably without
verbalizing it, if just so Rampage and P-20 don’t need to force you to shut up.
““I really
hate to break up this latest installment of ‘What the fuck, Blackjack,’ but
four of us are slowly dying here,” Rampage said with a snort at me.”
Oh,
Rampage. It’s probably a bad thing I’m thinking so much like you.
“Bad
pony.” Psychoshy smirked, poking my shoulder before trotting past.
STFU
PSYCHOSHY, YOU AREN’T HELPING.
“Getting
her out of here alive would be a good start,” the alicorn said, patting me on
the head like I was a filly.
EEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Can haz picture?
“The
spell executed a single stroke that bit into the boot’s leather.”
Starmetal
can damage soul jars. Makes sense, but good to know.
“The vast
central shaft of Hightower rose ten stories above me. Midway up, like a
fiery dagger plunged into the heart of the structure, the missile jutted out
into the middle of the space. Blue fire flew off the tip in volcanic
eruptions that sprayed the sticky blue flame in glowing arcs. The
unnatural blaze continued burning, no matter what it landed on, and the middle
of the shaft was awash in a ring of radioactive fire. Inside every cell,
blue-glowing shapes screamed and hammered against their restraints.
Sentry robots rolled around the walkways, their metal bodies bent and
warped by the tremendous heat.”
Okay,
that doesn’t sound like your normal balefire. Some kind of mind/soul based
weapon? Or could it just have been corrupted in the intervening

I think that it makes sense, actually. Unlike the maximum security prisoners or ordinary ponies in the other objects, the suit was a highly skilled spy. That means intelligence and quick thinking, and versatility, among other things. Given the choice between hanging around the prison for another X centuries or helping and following these very interesting people who've just wandered in (and even if the suit doesn't recognize Snips, it must know that getting into these storage rooms would require certain pieces of information…), it seems natural that the suit would decide to go with them and see what happened. Besides, if things go wrong, what's going to happen to it? The only weapon it knows of that could hurt it is in the hooves of one of the ponies it just allied itself with.Icy Shake wrote:I'm a little surprised the suit was playing so nicely with everypony, given who it must have been before the operation.

Ah, I see where you're coming from now. I guess I was stuck in the holdover grudge mode from the Meatlocker part of the chapter. Incidentally, I may never be able to watch Disney's Aladdin without thinking of Carpet much differently; since I had never played NV, that's what I thought of when it appeared. Looking back, I don't think it's hard to see why. Even the personality seems similar, but with it being so early in the stealth suit's tenure in the story it's probably just me writing what I want/expect to see on a blank slate.

- Chapter 46 Comments:
Dat chapter quote. XD
I backed away from the still body of Tulip as the Meatlocker security mare approached.
Ah. Right. Not laughing anymore.
“Yes. I figured you didn’t.”
Whaaaaat? A reasonable authority figure?
It's a trick. Get an axe.
“Law enforcement, actually.”
Ohhh hell. Do not tell me this is Softheart!
I popped out a finger and scratched out a booger, making her squirm in disgust when I flicked it away with a grin. Freakshow that, Willow.
Bwahahaha... oh, BJ, why you so awesome? And disgusting?
Softheart and I were assigned to catch the Angel of Death serial killer.
Ahhh. Interesting. I wonder if she was the hard-boiled half of that buddy cop movie.
Turns out she was an M.o.P. nurse. Snapped under the pressure. ... We caught Nurse Candy...
A name! At last!
Angel slipped up. Softheart had a kid, and the Angel went after her.
Whoof. I kinda thought that might be the case.
Softheart snapped. Couldn’t take it. Maybe it was her injuries or something, but she couldn’t let it go. Said she could feel the Angel inside her. Woke up in her daughter’s room with a knife. Finally jumped in front of a subway train.
Ohhhh, shit. That sounds familiar. A mortally wounded Softheart saved by the first stages of Project Eternity?
“Keep your eyes out for somepony that can crush a skull with one blow.”
I know at least three, but one was getting drunk on soap at the time, and the other two were supposed to be dancing...
It fit like a sock.
This expression made me grin.
I started towards the entrance when I heard a familiar mare cry out, “Oh Maiden of the Stars, why have you cursed me so!? I beg you, return and finish me off! End my torment!”
I trotted out on to the front steps and beheld a filthy, rain-soaked, wretched-looking Xanthe. The zebra mare’s eyes popped wide as she stared past the scowling ghouls and at me. “Oh, sweet sun above, I am damned.”
XD Oh, poor Xanthe, why you so cute?
Curly pink mane streaked with filth and dried blood met my eyes, and then two bright and terrified blue eyes peeked back at me for a moment before I shared a scream with a filly who was supposed to be dead.
Pardon me while I go reboot my brain.
(distant screaming and cursing)
...well. Well well well. The stars do move through coincidence and chance, don't they? One stray bullet into the right corner, and Boing gets saved.
“Cerberus! I’ve got a mission for you. You’re going to escort Nurse Graves on her expedition.”
I do not like this plan. Too much chance that his combat inhibitor gets damaged, or someone says "Goldenblood" and he goes all Cyberdaemon, or...
“So I heard you unkilled a foal. How’d you pull that one off?”
Bwahahaha! I should not be loving her bluntness this much.
Then she glanced over at Stygius, saw his disapproval, and blinked and forced a grin. “I mean, way to go!” Stygius just sighed and looked away. Psychoshy’s grimace melted into a worried, uncertain frown.
Hehehe, d'awww. He sure says a lot for a guy you can't talk.
“Ave,” she said formally.
...well, that's a thing that just happened...
“As much as I liked Tulip, it’s not exactly our job to catch her killer, is it?” Psychoshy said, staring at me and waiting for an argument.
Perhaps you'd like to read what's written on the side of BJ's armor, Psycho.
“So, that’s me, Lacunae, Rampage, Psychoshy, Stygius, Mr. Shears, Nurse Graves, Cerberus, Xanthe…”
I really don't like this. Too many bodies. Resources split too many ways. Too much potential for secret objectives.
“She did… at first. And she enjoyed my humiliation.”
The Goddess is a bitch.
“Sometimes I think she’s stripped away so much of Twilight that there’s more of her in me than in the Goddess herself.”
...and needs to go down.
In the basement are storage, generators, and all the infrastructure for supporting the building. Hightower has its own shielded reactor.
Sounds like a good place to set off a balefire bomb without obliterating the surrounding real estate.
These talismans will ward off the Enervation for several hours.
Well that's handy! Okay, I feel better about bringing the normals along now.
That talisman is the product of ancient zebra magic.
Ahh. That makes more sense. Naturally the priests would need some immunity to the EoS while they made their sacrifices...
“Like, these tunnels are so disgusting! Somepony really needs to clean them up!” came a mutter from the back of the group. I sighed, rolling my eyes.
WHAT.
“Pony immortality,” he said grimly. Rampage looked over at the little round ghoul, her eyes inscrutable pink pools. I tensed, but she only looked away again.
Why do I have this feeling that Shears won't be getting out of this?
Shears had pulled from his robe a pair of large, wicked-looking magic-powered hedge trimmers. Every time a ghoul lunged forward, the clippers snapped, and more than one ghoul fell back missing a leg or head.
That's strangely badass...
The healing magic was closing the injuries in his wings surprisingly quickly.
Interesting... is that because they're now completely protected against the Enervation?
I mean, Quartz is still there, but she doesn’t seem to know what’s going on anymore. I mean, she seemed to be really close and devoted to Goldenblood, so maybe she’s just hanging in there while Horse settles in.
Even more interesting. If there was an Inner Circle conspiracy, then, perhaps not all of the liasons were in on it...
“Do I know you?” Silver Spoon asked Shears in an annoyed tone, but the round little ghoul refused to meet her eye.
Heh...
I looked at him for several seconds, sure that he was going to give some possibly insightful and probably annoyingly cryptic comment, but all he did was shrug.
Vaguely disappointed, I sighed and then hit the ‘Y’ button on the terminal.
Yeah, of all the projects, this is the one that seems least useful to anyone. The project had more or less reached fruition already. It might give some clues on how to kill Rampage, but it's unlikely to spawn the kind of problems unlocking Chimera would.
I hung looking down from the ceiling of a tastefully but luxuriously decorated penthouse apartment.
I have to assume this was more spy camera footage. I guess this explains how Goldie knew about the book, if indeed he was the one watching...
I stared in horror as the bluish heap began to lunge up and wiggle. It thrust out two hooves towards me and a dripping equine head emerged.
Man, what?!
“Yeah. Besides, what could we have done if we had known? Bring a couple tons of gelatin?”
Funny she should say that, I was just thinking that was one of those fights that can threaten a high-level party that's unprepared, but outfitted with flame and energy weapons, it probably wouldn't be so bad.
“Smooze?” Xanthe suggested, and every eye turned to her. She dropped her eyes sheepishly. “Sorry…”
SOMBER WHAT HAVE YOU DONE. Also, can't be -- not enough singing.
“Tiara, why does Twist keep calling you Blackjack?”
She sure is perceptive for a blind, crazy ghoul.
Pretty nice for the Wasteland. Pretty horrible for Blackjack.
I like this comment. It kind of sums up how different her psychology is from most ponies out there.
By the same token: Pretty nice for Stable 99. Pretty horrible for Glory.
“Me too, but… welcome to Hoofington,” I muttered. “Don’t forget your complimentary bag of suck.”
Somehow, BJ has this way with words without going beyond a seventh-grade reading level.
Beside that was an old pony-in-the-box.
YOU JUST FUCKING HAD TO SHOVE A SOUL IN A JACK-IN-THE-BOX DIDN'T YOU?!
Next stop, creepy doll with a knife.
I brought out my sword and ran over to her.
Oh, right! ...dammit, soul-sword, stop being useful!
“My magic can’t get a grip on it!” Shears shouted. “That sword wants to kill!”
Especially stop being useful to the badguys!
It had to be one of the oddest suits I’d ever seen. It looked to be mostly black but had a luminous white chestpiece and strange white circuitry stripes along the side.
And it appears to be the cutest Stealth suit Mk II ever.
“The wearers would feel uncomfortable. Watched. They’d exhibit personality changes, growing closer to the captive soul,” Shears said quietly as he circled the armor. “And since most of the souls we used were maximum security prisoners....”
That sounds a whole lot like Softheart's experience...
She removed the hazmat suit, and the infiltration suit immediately opened up. A minute later it zipped up completely, latching itself in place.
...huh. So does that mean that the soul in the armor has some say in how well it protects?
“Hello, convicts. I am Warden Hobble, administrator for this facility, and your host for the duration of your sentence for crimes against Equestria. I look forward to making your stay here as... comfortable... as possible.” He gave a ragged, mocking laugh. “Welcome to the Tower!”
On the bright side, at least he didn't start babbling about penises...
Believe it or not, this chapter was supposed to be only 30 pages or so... hopefully next chapter is brief. Cross your hooves.
Brief? Who wants brief?
- Chapter 46 Editing:
And Ahuizotl wants us one step up from feral so we’ll all keep drowning in booze and Rainboom.” At my clueless expression, she snapped, “Super strong Dash.”
If that's the name you're going with, you might want to update chapter 15 and 16, where it's called "Ultra-Dash".
Somepony other than Rampage. I’d left Rampage in Mortuary before I found Tulip’s body.
One of those Rampages should be changed to "her".
Suffice to say they work, and if they don’t this expedition will be over before we leave the basement.” Xanthe took the shell casing as if she expected it to turn into a radroach and bite her. A red dot appeared in the basement. “We’ll enter through the basement.
Another repetition thing here -- I'd change 'through the basement' to 'here.'
The tip began to work its way through the chestplate of my barding. Then it felt it prick my skin.
Then I felt

It sounds like they have a limited lifespan, that they can only absorb so much enervation before they're expended. It's not an eternal get-out-of-enervation-free card. I wouldn't be surprised to see the talismans decaying as they absorb the enervation. And they certainly require Black Book knowledge to create, so it's not like just anyone can do it.Cptadder wrote:Starkatteri anti-Enervation talismans? Kinda out of left field for those, interesting they were gun shells but the question is why they don't sell to every Hoofington visitor if they are in such a common item as a bullet shell, implies they were produced recently.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
the enervation talismans probably have a set capacity to how much they can absorb. Since they only have value in the hoofington region their circulation would stay within the hoofington region(if they were to be sold). I bring that up because I would assume enervation is blanketed over the hoofington region, kinda like radiation, so there is probably a constant supply even if it is minute. that being said it would probably be absorbed by the talismans on a fairly regular basis. So the talismans probably deteriorate fairly regularly over time.
I would assume the talismans Shears has were most likely recently created, because if not, they are putting faith in a bullet that would probably go to better use shooting themselves in the head with because by the time they would be of any use they would probably be used up. I dunno, that's how I see it.

You're assuming that "self-destruct" is the same as "explode". Every other piece of Zebra equipment with that functionality that we've seen -- at least one sword and two stealth cloaks -- simply cracked its gem and lost its enchantment, becoming mundane.MrMagma wrote:The suits explode when the wearer is 'removed'. I assume this is a safety mechanism such that if said wearer was ever discovered (it is an infiltration suit after all), that the wearer could could simply ditch the suit in a sort of suicide bomber attempt. This would probably function the same if the wearer died whilst wearing the suit, in a sort of 'dead man's hand' style. However, having the soul remain in the suit seems to prevent it from detonating, as the wearer would still be considered 'alive' by the suit.
Anyway, you're correct... being a soul jar, it should be indestructable and therefore immune to its own self-destruct.
Because her healing talisman "heals" the "poison" she's trying to get drunk on. So she has to add something way worse to keep it busy while she enjoys being drunk.Jeremyrush wrote:“Ugh… remind me not to eat soap next time I’m looking to get drunk,” Yeah, I don't understand that. Why was she eating soap. That doesn't get you drunk. Or does it? I'm not testing this out.

Putting the zebra soul in the stealth suit basically tricked the self destruct system into believing it hadn't been removed. Then Rarity tried to alter it and make it more user friendly, with minimal success.
Not trying to upset you further or be mean here - but of course it was going to come up.
I'm glad I managed to get it right (soul inside the suit stops it from exploding) but without a clear explanation within the chapter of why the suit didn't blow up (apart from 'we didn't remove her') you're going to get people bring it up if the suit is empty.
Thank you for clearing it up for us - and once again, as I said in my review, brilliant chapter.

I don't know why, exactly, I picked up on it, but as I was reading I noticed he wasn't brought up and in my head I was going "Blackjack! You forgot Shears! Go back before the ooze gets him!"

So yeah, yay corrections.
Speaking of corrections, it's always weird whenever a chapter gets released ~1am my time. Typically I get tired and fall asleep at ~3 so it means I end up reading half a chapter and then the other half in the morning. This chapter was a similar case.
Someone said they went and brought Silver Spoon. I don't recall it happening like that. I remember them finding Spoony in the tunnels. Did they? I had just woken up so I probably derped and misread a few paragraphs.

Blackjack had to go and get her.

Oh no, I'm one of the adventurers heh. Fortunately we had 2 new people join today, and they had fairly power-gamed characters (that the GM helped them make, since they're fairly new to the game), so my character's damage wasn't really required. I did save their asses from a cluster of minions with a bottle of alchemist fire though - and then threw another bottle of alchemist fire blindly over a boulder and hit two of my allies and one enemy. Oh, and I got blackmail (typed that "blackjack", twice...) material for our group's cleric.O. Hinds wrote:If you're the GM, it might not end that badly for the players.
