The problem with simply making a hole in the helmet for a horn is that the horn becomes a big 'shoot here' sign. If you have armor covering every other part of your body it's silly to leave that part exposed.

That and the armor has an auto repair spell. So if your armor gets damaged you can't repair it unless you want to lose your horn. You could always pop off your helmet of course but that's not an ideal solution in combat.

You forget, that horn can be armored too. I mean it can be part of helmet's armor. Not for every horn size, but 'average' size horn. If you can't fit your pointy thing in it - you don't need it.

The question is: can you do magic through such heavy armor? and that opens up the 'how does magic work' can of worms.

Well to be honest, making heavy armor for unicorns is kinda pointless. Unicorns seem more like support troops then anything else. Support wouldn't need that heavy of armor, that stuff would go more to assault and shock troopers.

Maybe in general, but those Ninja Pirate Zombie Robots need special gear for maximum effectiveness.

It seems like there would be a huge amount of direct combat applications for magic (faster and more accurate aiming, shielding, combat spells, etc.) which would make them really appealing as frontline troops. You're right that heavy armor would be somewhat pointless on a unicorn, but that's mostly because magical shielding and healing makes it slightly redundant and, like pegasi, they'd probably favor lighter and more maneuverable armor.

Pretty much, yes. just imagine Blackjack in something like this...well the parts of her that still need armor at least...  or better yet, Littlepip.

Also, special horn shielding, that conducts magic, but protects the horn and head.

I think I know what I'm drawing next =P
