It's hell o'clock, I've been up too long, and I just watched Rubber. Has a below-six/10 on imdb. It's also the first movie I've been able to finish in... well, a while. It's exactly what I've been looking for lately. Totally bizarre. Beautifully shot. Has exploding heads. It's like Natural Born Killers, only way stranger. The acting is half atrocious, half brilliant, and the bad stuff might be intentional. Ludicrous symbolism. Grim humor for days.
It's about a tire that comes to life and goes on a killing spree. It's also about more than that, and about nothing whatsoever, but that's spoilers. At least watch the first few scenes. The first speech from the cop character is something else. It's a meandering, surreal wreck, and I love it.

That was one of the better jokes this year :P
And hm, think I did something to my arm when changing tires today... lost the ability to lift things in the left one...
I should really figure out what to do with my LTAC... it's pretty busted up, but it's a military vehicle, and my dad left it for me. Feels like a waste to not take care of it.

It was a video of a school parking lot. Overweight woman (either older student or younger teacher; her face is unclear) pushes down a black boy who doesn't appear to be antagonizing her. He gets up and does some fuckin' badass WWE super-slam shit, and she (and several others) are completely flabbergasted that a man fought back when a woman attacked him

@Valikdu
Is that a Friday the 13th soundtrack portion we hear? Nice.
EDIT: It's my day off starting now, so I am trying a beer Hobbit-style (AKA "It comes in pints?! I'm getting one."). Very dark. Even the foam is a burnt caramel color. It says "Yeti" on it, also, and "Great Divide Brewing Co." I don't know much about beer, but it seems pretty great.

Yeti is really good. If you enjoy that, I highly recommend checking out the variants of it. They make a bourbon aged yeti and a chocolate yeti which are both delicious.

Hmm, nice. I'll check 'em out if I ever get to a proper store. Found this one in the assorted-local-and-weird-stuff aisle at the supermarket near where I work - I don't think they had any variants, unfortunately. Bourbon one sounds interesting for sure.Bootleg wrote:Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:EDIT: It's my day off starting now, so I am trying a beer Hobbit-style (AKA "It comes in pints?! Sunrider is getting a big story DLC!
Well, I have a boner.
- Shields, you can't do that! You'll create a time paradox!:
Kayto Shields returns for his next adventure in the Sunrider universe. Experience the story of Liberation Day in a completely different way when Shields wakes up 72 hours before the ending of Liberation Day, somehow fully aware of who will betray him… and finds that he must stop another Kayto Shields from repeating history.
But under what mysterious circumstances was he sent back to the past? Will he be able to race against time and change the bleak future? Or is history doomed to repeat itself?- Â Â The DLC adds the [RE]turn afterstory arc after you have completed the main story of Liberation Day
- Â Â Take control of Kayto Shields in this desperate race against time, where every decision means the difference between life and death
- Â Â Build your relationship with Asaga, Ava, Claude, Icari, or Sola to change history.
- Â Â Multi-route, highly replayable scenario with multiple endings
- Â Â Story only addon, double the length as the Liberation Day story script
- Â Â Thrilling suspense story where death is always around the corner
- Â Â The DLC adds the [RE]turn afterstory arc after you have completed the main story of Liberation Day
Well, I have a boner.

Yeah, I think we talked about it. Dunno what's going on with it at the moment - haven't heard about it getting explained yet, one way or another. It'd be cool if it actually works.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
So, finally got around to seeing Batman vs. Superman. I went in seeing it more as an obligation than with any great hope, apart from perhaps finding bits to enjoy within a larger mess. Maybe it's from the soft bigotry of low expectations (brought about by things like these: Zach, Superman isn't the Bad Guy and Both the Director and Writer of BvS Don't Understand Superheroes), maybe it's because I just need to believe DC can deliver a good live action movie because otherwise I'm basically stuck with Marvel as far as those go, and I just don't really care about that world or those characters very much (Cap a bit, I'll probably be giving Dr. Strange a chance, and if nothing else Robert Downey Jr.'s charisma as Tony Stark is great), but I came away from it fairly happy, and will probably see it again (rented) at some point later on. There were annoying things, worrying things, dumb aspects, and some parts (really just one or one and a half) were horribly botched to an extent and in a way that I wouldn't have believed possible, but the rest, on balance and with expectations sufficiently lowered, was pretty good. On the whole, better than Man of Steel, and a hell of a lot better than The Dark Knight Rises.
- Spoiler:
Okay, worst part first: this Lex is goddamn atrocious and I don't understand why they thought this was a good idea. Why make Superman's arch-nemesis a whiny, awkward, charisma-less wimp? Lex needs gravitas, and that was so, so absent as to be unbelievable. Also, I can't help but feel that they got the nuance of his motivation wrong: the philosophy shouldn't be pure dick measuring and satisfaction of a no-gods-only-men philosophy, but remember to incorporate the aspect that relying on superheroes prevents humanity from being all it can be. (And the incorporation of what I believe to be setup for an Apokoliptian invasion just muddled this further, because purging the Earth of people who might be able to deal with that, when they couldn't even handle the original Kryptonian micro invasion, but not talking about why the purge is needed or advisable strike me as off.)
And okay. The whole Bat-v-Super thing was kind of dumb, but I was prepared for that because of course it was going to be. (Though Supes getting all butthurt over Batman's way of doing things would work better if it didn't seem that Gotham and Metropolis are right across the river from each other. How the hell has he not been aware of Batman until now? And so forth.) And at least at the highest level their kinda-making-friends worked (detail, less so). However, their actual fight was inane and contrived (why didn't Bats just have the spear nearby, why isn't Superman just fucking telling Batman what is going on, etc.?), but it was only really terrible when it got to the point of Supes begging that Batman "save Martha." Now, of course their mothers sharing a first name isn't an invention of the movie, but in forcing an emotional gut-punch on Bruce, they necessarily highlighted the coincidence, and in a way that was completely unnatural. Basically, I think that him saying "Martha" the way he did was wrong: if he was a broken down as he seemed, unable to elaborate or seemingly think, really, that should have been "Ma"; if he had the degree of composure and awareness to not say the thing that would be emotionally natural for him, why couldn't he even manage a "my mother" or something like that rather than keeping on with "Martha"? Or even "Martha Kent"? Whatever. I guess they needed Lois there for plot reasons, and that gave her something to do when she arrived.
Aspects of Batman were concerning, especially the marking prisoners for death thing. But that actually turned into a key aspect of his character arc, and kind of worked out pretty well in my opinion. And I think I'm okay enough with him using guns the way they were in this movie: on vehicles has been pretty regular in the movies, and the personal level is either as a delivery mechanism for (powdered/aerosolized) kryptonite or basically using others' guns against them, in a way which appeared to me to not actually hit anyone (and I'm fine with the idea that he's trained with guns enough to be sure he can use them for suppressing fire/scaring people while missing them).
Superman was kind of generally blah, and his emotional conflict, while maybe something that can work for him, did not have enough support to justify it. Martha Kent saying "you don't owe them anything" was crap. Up there with Jonathan saying maybe he should have let a bus full of kids drown last movie. With Kents like these, maybe it's not a surprise that this Superman isn't really . . . Superman.
I don't know how they're going to play Wonder Woman's backstory, as WWII makes the usual way of getting Steve Trevor to Paradise Island more plausible than (pre-?) WWI, but that's marginal. What has me more worried is her disappearing for a century. Did she go back? If so, why's she in Man's World once again? But that's all for the future. Is she not even a magical princess of an all-female tribe of Greek warriors on a hidden island who talks to animals? There are suggestions, like her keeping track of the location of the real sword of Alexander the Great and the way she uses "men" at the end, that she might have some of those attributes, which is good. (Oh, what was with Batman saying "I thought she was with you"? Maybe it was a joke, but if so, it didn't land for me.)
There was a decided overreaction to the (entirely legitimate) complaints about Superman wrecking Metropolis (and everywhere else) by never trying to take the fight elsewhere. There were at least four times when there was a line remarking on places being empty or abandoned or whatever when there was destruction around. Yes, it's good they care and are trying to avoid that shit again, but in at least one case no line was needed because you could see that was the case, and it was a discussion by government types among themselves anyway. AND IT WAS THE CORE OF ONE OF THE PROTAGONISTS' MOTIVATION FOR HIS BEEF WITH THE OTHER. THAT'S ENOUGH ALONG WITH MAYBE ONE OTHER REFERENCE.
I was surprised they pulled the Doomsday trigger this early. And Superman's "death." The weirder thing is why everyone would suddenly love Superman afterward, when the basic situation wasn't much different than the last time around. I guess the different motive Lex had than Zod might contribute, and you no longer have to fear a dead man?
And, of course, STOP DESATURATING THE ENTIRE FUCKING MOVIE. COLOR IS NOT THE ENEMY. Sure, desaturating some shots or scenes for tone is fine, but 150 minutes of drab, dark-washed-out screen is way too much. Oh, and I hate the sad-Superman piano theme. It's also applied in cases where the impact is just wasted because I either wasn't invested in the first place or know that he's not going to stay dead, so it feels like even more blatant emotional manipulation.
Okay, for the good. Lots of good performances, and I liked the action for the most part, which felt very intense but pretty easy to follow. Just wish they'd stop whiting out the screen so much.
I liked Alfred and Perry, so even if Lois was a bit meh, there was pretty good supporting cast.
Even if Superman never saved anyone but another main character on-screen, they at least made reference to him getting cats out of trees (I was actually hoping for rescues on-screen, and yes, maybe even picking a cat out of a tree and handing it to a little girl, but it was already a really long movie and the latter would certainly clash with the (too dark and grim) tone). But Batman did, saving two as Bruce Wayne during the MoS battle of Metropolis and a basement full of trafficked slaves(?) as Batman.
For all that I had concerns about Batman's characterization, the way it was built into the (dumb) plot so as to bring him back around to more of what he should be (and was implied to have been before MoS happened) may have actually made it a plus. And showing that Wayne was doing things as more than just Batman was good: here, it was the support for the victims of the battle in Metropolis. Establishing Batman as having operated for a couple decades frees up space that had been restricted by Superman, and apparently superheroes/powers generally, as a new thing for the world. And Affleck was very solid.
Wonder Woman was all around great. Not a huge role so far, but there's room here for her to be a hero with less stupid or asshole baggage than the other two. Also, it looks like they might be incorporating some aspects of when she was a spy for a while a few decades back, and if so, I say great.
The Flash's bit was interesting, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman was brilliant casting and I can't wait to see more of him in the role than his tiny cameo. (Granted, I've been a bit of a fan ever since he was on Stargate Atlantis.)
They've moved to a status quo where maybe we can mostly move past the whole heroes-are-a-threat thing. Sure, not perfectly realistic, and it requires dropping a lot of MoS down the memory hole . . . but isn't that for the best, anyway?
I liked the setup for JL, and probable Darkseid. The Bat Cave was cool, and having Batman clearly working with the police/DA is a good thing. A pro-Superman faction of the government was nice.
Probably more, just kind of diffuse. Unfortunately, that's never been my strongest point.
