Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
- Prompt: The doctor is in:
Two hours had passed, and not a moment of them silently.
Through the frightened whispers and thick, near-panicked breathing of those in binds, other sounds strained to be heard. The quiet whirring of newly-made limbs and servomotors was nearly drowned out by their forefathers, the old machines' thick and heavy clanks and clicks and scraping sounding out without end. Unknown fluid flowed through the conduits and piping that practically line the walls, cold and rushing and soaking up any faint heat that might ease the shivering of the waiting and the chained. Worst, it seemed, are the sounds of life. The wet, sick crunch and squelch and rip is rare, but it seems to cut through all other noise, heard by all from, it seemed, half the world away. No cries, no groans, no screams sounded out with them. It was far too late for help to hear their cries.
The shivering, huddled mass, twenty in all, are all upon their knees, held there by heavy, crude chains. Their dirty, stained and, for some, soiled clothing and skin is cast in a deep green glare by the gas lights far above. The walls, so high the ceiling cannot be seen for shadows, are of thick concrete, chipped and cracked by time. The floor, marred with dark stains and the scrapes of dragging bodies and futile resistance, is more of the same. But for a few, precious patches of the baleful, bile-colored light, like the one the wretches waited in, shadows abounded. Within those shadows moved and lurked the unknown, the forgotten things that were best left forgotten. Their captors; their tormentors; their unquestioned and inevitable masters.
It was within these shadows, overlooking the newest harvest, that two stood. The black-clad man was of a mean stature, a great deal shorter than many below, with a slight build to match. In the meager scraps of light that reached them, his sharp, angular face; the sunken eyes and sallow cheeks, were cast in darkness that hid all expression. His hands were clasped behind his back as he looked upon the pitiful mass; the picture of calm. He turned his head only slightly to speak to his seneschal in a dry rasp.
"Twenty this time. He grows most skilled. A tongue as sharp as his scalpel."
The woman gave the barest nod, one cold eye hidden by her untidy mop of deep black hair. She looked down upon him, wiry arms crossed over a lean frame concealed by armor and black clothing. Her sidearm alone was her killing tool; the weapons on her back meant more to persuade, to prod, to bring to heel the unruly subjects. Her voice was the barest whisper when she spoke.
"It is a risk, is it not? To lead them here with such innocent conviction is the surest way, but the mask will always seek to become the true face."
"A risk it may be," The small man conceded with a nod, casting his gaze back to those in waiting. "But I have faith in him. Within the prison of his own mind, he guides his warden well. Fear not; should the worst come to worst, we shall simply turn to you to ply your own craft. Now, to business." Shrouded eyes narrowed as he cast a critical, searching eye through the huddled mass of his guests. "He sculpted his visage again before he left, didn't he? I trust you learned his face well?"
With a silent nod, the woman pointed out to their colleague. Behind them, the orderly awoke.
____*____
He had never been so terrified in his life.
He and his newest companions had fled once more from the grasping claws, away from their temporary refuge. He knew all too well that he only delayed the inevitable. More and more were claimed every day; without respite and without end. All resistance had crumpled; all rulers taken or deposed while the proletariat masses could do naught but flee.
And flee they had, toward what he had believed so fervently to be refuge. He had known, in his heart of hearts, that safety awaited.
All that had awaited was chains.
All that had awaited was them.
A scraping, skittering sound broke him from the depths of his ruminations. He looked to the darkened alcove it had come from, and his eyes widened as even more fear entered him.
Six iron limbs, the sharp and segmented limbs of a beetle or spider, held aloft an iron skull as its black, sightless pits beheld them. A crude iron spine writhed beneath it, tipped by a four-pronged claw.
It saw him. Though its eyes were a void, he knew its gaze was upon him.
It lept down, right into the midst of his fellows. Before he could think to struggle in his binds, it was upon him towering over him with upon its inhuman limbs. The nightmarish thing let not a moment go to waste; it lashed forward, and the claw was upon his skull even as he tried to move away as much as his chains would allow. The grasping digits held firm, and he began to weep for terror; tears streaming down even as he screamed into the hollow, cavernous depths of stone. Sharp pain flowed into him as one the spiked tip of a claw touched the base of his skull, and he knew no more.
____*____
And then he awoke. A triumphant grin found its way to his face as the mask within his mind was banished, the neural construct slipped away. He held his grin as the orderly released him, both from its grasp and from the grasp of the heavy manacles that held him. He stood up and strode from the filthy, unwashed throng, savoring the control he had over his body, his temple, once more. He looked upon his newest subjects, and he grinned. The orderly had done well, as ever. It waited patiently for its flesh, for completion, and he felt it had waited long enough. His first project, it seemed, was laid before him. He cast an eye back to the alcove where the others waited, and he gave a small nod. Turning back to face his subjects, a cruel smile found a way to his face as possibilities began to unfold, as experiments and projects thronged and competed for attention in his liberated mind.
There was no time to waste.
In unrelated news, as I mentioned before, a common tactic of mine in Skyrim is to connive others into fighting for me. When I get high-level, the game ends up being a more typical hack-and-slash or sneak-and-stab affair that frankly, after this long in the game, is getting stale. So, thought I, why not make others fighting for me a core mechanic? Therefore, what will likely be my last playthrough of Skyrim for the foreseeable future will be my "CIA Agent" run: Focused on Speech, Lockpick and Conjuration with a minor in Alteration and Sneak. Hire companions, equip them with staves of summoning, enhance my own conjuration for maximum summons, and generally just focus on being the one guy out there not fighting. This will be interesting, methinks.

I plan to invest a perk or two into Destruction as A.) a backup, and B.) if I recall correctly, perks affecting a specific element also affect the corresponding Atronoch

Cast Fury on a Bandit.
No one else is present. Bandit does not see me. Bandit goes searching.
Bandit pulls lever on trapped Draugr door. Bandit is riddled with poison arrows.
This is the best build ever.

The dust was battering at my suit, lifted by the strong winds of the end of summer, obscuring the rust colored skies to a dim twilight even though we were in the middle of the day.
I reflexively checked my wrist. O2 was still good, and the fusion cell my back made sure that I wasn't going to run out of it anytime soon. Turning back from the promontory, I walked to the crawler, and grabbed the binoculars. Jörgen had told me they were supposed to come through the valley later today.
I quickly scanned the area through the binoculars, the old optronics working their magic allowing me to see through most of the dustcloud as if it wasn't there. The trail was clear, without any obstacle.
The job was easy enough: block the convoy, dispose of the escort, and get the package back to home. Easy.
I checked again the detonator. All the charges were set, and were only awaiting the signal. A flip of a switch, and not only would half the valley fall on their heads, but half a dozen heavy drones would mope up the remains of any resistance.
I almost felt a hint of pity for the poor bastards. Almost.
Now we were going to play the waiting game.***
I waited. And waited some more. Damn this was starting to feel long.
As the sun was starting to set, I finally saw them in the distance. Their crawlers were kicking up enough dust to be seen from kilometers away. I could already feel the bounty coming.
As they entered the valley, I checked everything one last time. The remote was warm and ready to send the signal, the drones' weapons were hot. Their end was nigh.
As they approached from the chokepoint, my tension started to rise. There only going to be one try. One hitch, and I could bet my fucking ass I'd have to pay for another resurrection. And considering this fucking job was already supposed to reimburse the last one, I didn't want to think about what failure could mean.
Almost there... Almost...
There.
In the span of a second, enough sticks of explosive to get half a mountain to be pulverized detonated, sending a shockwave strong enough to kick up dust half a dozen kilometers downrange, where I was already ordering the drones to take off.
The dust kicked by their hot exhausts blew across my visor, blinding me for a few seconds while I wiped it away.
I quickly ran toward the crawler, and walking into the back I started to monitor the drones' activity.
They were already hard at work picking off the few survivors, who offered little resistance, concussed as they were from the heavy blast they had just endured.
A few more minutes of senseless murder, and the drones were ready to mickup the package from the crawlers' wreckage. They directed their attention toward the middle one, and with mechanical speed and precision, they opened the armored vehicle's skin like a tin can. A soda can, apparently, as the pressurized compartment released its atmosphere outside, the humidity inside instantaneously turning to ice before evaporating into the outer atmosphere.
One of the drones reached inside, and got out several crates. Now, which one was the good one?
I did the most sensible thing and ordered three of the drones to take one crate each, which they did.
A few minutes later, every one of them were back. I patted one on its landing leg, and directed them to load the crates inside the crawler.
Tonight, we ride.***
The ride back to base was surprisingly uneventful, considering I had just wiped single-handedly a whole League convoy. Almost suspiciously so. But who cared? Tonight I was going to pay back my debt, and also get really drunk.
Finally, here I was. Castle Flare, of the Phoenix Alliance. A pompous name, for a biodome built around the ruins of one of the first settlements on that god damned planet.
The security perimeter recognized my transponder, avoiding me getting atomized a few dozen different ways, and in a few minutes, I was into the motorpool, having the drones discharge the booty. I could already already feel the one I was going to get soon...
As I descended from the crawler's cabin, I was greeted by Jörgen's scarred scowl.
“What the hell does this mean?” He pointed toward the crates.
“What 'what'? I killed the bastards and got the package, are you not satisfied?” I retorted, removing my helmet and letting my hair flow.
“I had specified 'one crate', why is there three of them?” He asked, menacingly.
“You never told me what to look for exactly, so when I found more than one, how was I supposed to know which one was the good one?” I replied, defensively.
“Goddamit... Okay, fine. But I sure hope to god there's not going to be any problem or by all the seven hells I'm going to ripe your guts and feed them to you.”
“Thank you Jörgen, doing business with you is always a pleasure.” I told him, sarcastically, as I headed toward the bar.***
The following morning, I savored my first moments of freedom in a few years by flipping the bird to Jörgen as I headed toward the motorpool. Before he could try to murder me, I shut the crawler's door, and drove it outside.
Again, I passed the castle's defense without a hitch as I drove past the defensive perimeter and into the southern badlands.
It's only after a quarter of an hour that the flash behind me told me all I needed to know about the crates.
Life was good.

If he can't handle losing a toy, he can't handle the hardships that life brings.
He just needs some perspective.
Therefore, I suggest dying so he can learn the pain of losing a loved one.

it the fact that hes been working on this plane for a long time. its not just losing a toy. its losing the thing he got from his dad the night they got divorced. he wanted to record him flying it and have his mom send it 2 his dad. so to see the momento of his father get destroyed; that would hurt anyone.

Maybe this is just the hazy filter of retrospection talking, but I can't remember being begrieved over the loss of a toy, even as a ten year old. Annoyance and frustration, sure, but being seriously upset over it, even if it nominally held sentimental value (which I don't really ascribe to objects, anyway)? Not really.swicked wrote:Huh... well, still, if it can't be fixed, he needs to work through the grief. Especially given the plane can't be replaced. The most I'd recommend is getting him to a therapist if he wasn't already going to one regarding the divorce.
