Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Rainbow didn't raise an eyebrow for me. It did seem like Applejack was needling a bit, which isn't her primary mode but well within her range, and Rarity seemed a little standoffish, which I attributed to her coming off of a bad day.Somber wrote:Thanks. A lot of people say Applejack and Rainbow are OOC, but I can see RD just saying critical things like that without really thinking about it. And Applejack does draw back when she realizes her questions are upsetting Rarity. But maybe that's just me...

Part of why I hate her sometimes, yet she's still one of my top five favorite ponies, behind Twilight, Applejack, Luna and my wife

I'm glad Blackjack maxed out her speech skill, hopefully she will have no problem passing the three speech checks required to convince Glory of her identity.

Ah, yes. One of my favorite credits-based jokes. Topped though, I think, by the end credits sequence of 22 Jump Street.swicked wrote:You are listed as the executive producer.Somber wrote:Aoshi has put something amazing together. Someone (I believe it was Scienza) was looking for an epub version of Horizons, right? Well I found a sight here that offers epub, kindle editions, and has links to the gdoc file. The kindle edition only goes to chapter 58 (I'm not sure about the rest), but that's further then I've found in other downloadable kindle versions. Figured I'd leave that here.

It was a really sad, but really good chapter, sir.
It was a really sad, but really good chapter, sir.
- Chapter 68 Commentary:
"Chapter 68: Morning" - Glory
I wonder if the identity of that star spirit is going to end up being important. For some reason it seems more important than just as potential food for the Eater.
The talk between Blackjack and Goldenblood does do a pretty good job of tying up a few more small things.
The scene with Goldenblood's mother trying to choke him was pretty well creepy.
"And that's the nightmare. Knowing what will happen and being powerless to change it." - I know there's so many people out there who have said compelling arguments against this, and I can't think of a single one... But they're not completely powerless... However little power you might have, you /can/ make a difference, Pinkie did.
"Unfortunately, you're missing the fact that you have to kill me." - Oh, good, so he's not going to give that up, that would have been too easy.
"The stable disappeared, along with Midnight and Rivets, and Goldenblood stood along before me in the blackness." - "alone"
The scenes with the computer trying to get Blackjack to kill Goldenblood are extremely well done, and incredibly emotional. Blackjack shouting, "Because it would be easy! [...] Goddesses, you stupid fuck, I'm good at killing. I'm a fucking artist at it." gave me chills...
While it is sad how she's managed to accumulate her experiences with how Goldenblood feels, it's nice to see her be able to actually use it to try and talk some sense into him.
And when that fails because he's still too stuck on himself, it was awesome to see her smackdown the computer. I was literally almost giddy when she was saying "He wants the deaths you can give him here. [...] Here, he'll never die as he deserves." and the computer replying with "Interesting. I've never seen anxiety levels this high before." Well, as giddy I can be trying very hard not to cry. It was a great scene.
"I said as I took a seat, popped the cap off my bottle of amber heaven, and took a long pull. Oh, it burned! It burned like hell, and the warmth lifted me right to the tip of my horn." - Blackjack is so cute, heh. The last time she had a drink was the 'best night ever' wasn't it? Seems like such a long time ago.
"Take up rock collecting. I hear rocks are very big in the Wasteland." "You're mocking me." "Noooo... Well, maybe a little bit." - Definitely cute, heh.
"What's my value?" - I'd say Blackjack's worth the world.
"I shut him down with a look. It was the first time I'd given that look since Cognitum had torn my cutie mark away. It was the perfect blend of overconfidence and malice sprinkled with just the right amount of mad audacity, soaked masterfully in ethanol. My shooty look." - I think this is the first time the shooty look has ever really been described, and it's a pretty sweet description. It's nice to see her have confidence too.
"I'm sure that, had I not been inebriated, a much more touching reunion could have been arranged." - Oh Blackjack... I know you're drunk, but what made you think this was possibly a good idea after P-21 and Scotch?
I do feel pretty bad for Stygius and Tenebra before the fight.
"I'm sure plenty of ponies would find it terrifying but my drunken haze blurred all that away; I thought only one thing: 'Goddesses, he's slow.'" - It's worth saying again, I loved this line.
The whole fight is really pretty awesome, even if Blackjack does get the crap beat out of her (I mean, seriously, ouch). It could be because the season 4 finale is still fresh in my mind, but it definitely had the same feeling as Twilight's fight with Tirek (enough that I had trouble at times picturing Hades as a normal bat pony...). A mix of the fight with Tirek and a WoW raid boss. Freaking void zones.
"There! Oblitawhatchit me now, jackass!" - Another really great line. Hades' reaction also immediately made me guess the crown was the talisman, heh...
Yeah, glass is a really mean weapon...
I was somewhat worried when the crown broke that Blackjack would be stuck in the shadow realm until they could find another way out, I don't know if that would have been better or worse though... The bat ponies in their current state really don't stand a chance against the Brood, especially without any trained medical personnel...
"And I missed the fight!" - For some reason this in particular made me fairly sad.
Oh, and the Brood has unicorns now, that's great.
"Teleporting with another pony was... a whole lot trickier when I wasn't falling to my death." - Ow, poor Charm... six times.
"really, a baton was more my thing where melee weapons were concerned" - This /is/ a fairly odd comment for her to make, considering how much use she got out of her starmetal sword... That radroach will be heartbroken.
The reaction of the gate guards is really quite harsh to come out of nowhere... At least Sagittarius was willing to trade for the armor and sword.
"He led me into the Quad, and I saw the damage that Cognitum had wrought." - Well, I didn't think she'd faked it, but it's still sad to see it confirmed...
I'm glad Capri and Pisces were gone during the attack, it's really a shame about the three that didn't survive though...
Blackjack kissing the painted stallion and the following conversation about the dressed-up heroes is really very sad. Yes, it's nice that ponies want to do more to help the world, but Blackjack losing her sense of self over the second half of this chapter is incredibly painful.
"I'd go with the Lightbringer, but no one's one hundred percent sure what she looks like." - Despite everything, I did still smile a little at this.
I feel bad for Virgo, and I guess... proud? that she actually supported Blackjack when the fight was over.
"You were the spy. And you're still a spy." - I really don't know when I realized Zodiac was on Amadi's side, but when Blackjack made the connection earlier this chapter, I remember just thinking "So it's true..."
So she was the one responsible for Amadi finding Cognitum too, damn...
I was a little surprised she went along with showing Blackjack the video feed, though it was probably just to torment her before killing her...
It was a very painful scene...
"We haven't heard from Lancer yet. Sekashi and he must have some idea why they're attacking suddenly for no reason." - Definitely not a good sign... that means that something happened to Harpica, or more likely that they were killed or captured...
I know Rampage has to obey Cognitum to have any chance of fulfilling her wish, but I want to believe that she's trying to protect Blackjack's friends as much as she can too.
"about the time Cognitum'd begun threatening Glory, I'd grabbed the screen between my fetlocks, squeezing so hard my legs ached." - Poor Blackjack...
I think one of the more painful things about this chapter is just how much Blackjack gets wrecked in it, like the Wasteland is trying to make up for all the time she's spent with a healing talisman.
When Blackjack was slammed over by something invisible though, I didn't immediately make the connection that it was Zodiac with a cloak, some small part of me was terrified that it was Xanthe...
"Then she exploded. Well, not all of her. Just everything from horn to shoulders." - Well... admittedly Calamity and Velvet were definitely the last two ponies I ever thought I'd see again. I may not like her very much, but I am grateful for Velvet being a capable medic, Blackjack definitely needs one.
Yeah... Blackjack losing her sense of self is extremely sad...
*hugs Blackjack and Virgo*
The alicorn smiling at Blackjack was sweet, in its own little way.
Ah, I'd actually missed that the first time, so the reason Calamity and Velvet were in Collegiate was to get implants to repair the damage to his wing, that seems reasonable enough.
The scene in the destroyed building between Homage and Blackjack is also extremely sad and well done.
The ending hurt quite a bit as well... I really do hope Homage was right, and that Glory will be able to see through her pain and realize it's really Blackjack...

- In the Boo-verse, Cognitum spends most of the day running away from fillies and colts with dart guns trying to get good luck or "earn their achievement". Suction cups work great on a metal butt.

Hm. Maybe we ought to have said something about this; one of the team, I forget who (sorry!), brought this up too. Basically, the starmetal sword and the dragon claw were both unique weapons, and the starmetal sword, on top of that, wanted to be used. This sword, except for cultural and historical value which Blackjack doesn't appreciate, is just an ordinary sharp lump of metal. She prefers batons in general, in other words, but will quite readily use other melee weapons if they're good enough.[/quote]Ryx wrote:This /is/ a fairly odd comment for her to make, considering how much use she got out of her starmetal sword... Most of the time I read a new chapter in before sleeping I split it in two-three pieces but I just couldn't put this one down. Therefore the coffee intake today has been doubled!
Alright, lets start working trough the aftermath of this thread.
Also this is what it feels like when I'm scrolling through the posts and suddenly see a post with a well known cloud in it.

Somber is Batman?
And yes, my wife's Ponysona is ranked as one of my favorite ponies
Bite me
Ironically, my original OC was modeled after Blackjack
White Unicorn with red and black hair and red eyes
Imagine my disappointment when that design was already taken, so I made it a black pegasus with red and white hair and silver eyes

Shhh, pay no attention to my bad grammar
In my mind "original OC" makes sense since it was an original design of an original character...
I'm rather impressed that Blackjack managed to fight a male without gelding him
instead, she blinded him and exposed Black Pony Mountain
Whoops~

Everyone click here again. You can listen to all the tracks free now and some of them are freaking fantastic. (The first track's one of those narrative sound things, so you can skip that if you don't like it. Second track definitely kicks it.) I'm going to try sending it in to EqD, but it'd help to figure out other places we can get it visibility too.

No problem. I'd accidentally deleted my PDF ( I read using my phoned kindle app), so I had to hunt for another download. Came across it, thought KT was convenient. Further then my PDF was too.Scienza wrote:Thanks!Silver136 wrote:Someone (I believe it was Scienza) was looking for an epub version of Horizons, right? Eh, EqD is nowhere near as big as it used to be, and Somber doesn't have many followers on fimfic. I know there are alternative news sites to EqD but I can't remember their names.

I find myself quite liking it. I listen to some odd combo of metal, alternative, and electro and it appeals to a little of each (to me anyway). 9/10 would recommend.swicked wrote:Anyone gotten this yet? If so, how is it? I bought it without listening to it either. For me the important part is supporting Somber, so any songs in it that I do enjoy are just a bonus.Vinylshadow wrote:...you bought it without listening to it first?

Fair enough; alas, I am poorer than Charity Blackjack, so I won't be able to offer money

She prefers batons in general, in other words, but will quite readily use other melee weapons if they're good enough.Ryx wrote:This /is/ a fairly odd comment for her to make, considering how much use she got out of her starmetal sword... Also, no one's answered my question about Nallar's epub versions, and I'm not sure how I'd check them myself.

On the whole, I wasn't too enthused since for the most part it's not one of my preferred genres, but there were some tracks I enjoyed well enough to give consideration for incorporating into some playlists, including I believe all the Aoshi tracks, plus 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 34, and 37. These slanted more vocal, included a couple that were rap-based, and at least one that was more rock than electronic. For people who enjoy electronic, I suggest checking it out and seeing what strikes you.Silver136 wrote:I find myself quite liking it. I listen to some odd combo of metal, alternative, and electro and it appeals to a little of each (to me anyway). 9/10 would recommend.swicked wrote:Anyone gotten this yet? If so, how is it? I haven't listened to any new Brony music in a long time.Somber wrote:Aoshi has put something amazing together. He and another group of artists have put together a soundtrack for Horizons to help me out with bills and to hopefully get me to more conventions. You can look for it here!

You can just navigate to nallar.me/fics and download the EPUB, then extract with 7zip, or presumably other file extraction programs. It's only up to chapter 67, I guess because nallar updates weekly. I don't know what to do about the Kindle edition, but assume it's up to the same point.O.
