Have I already told you the story of black metal? It's one of my favorite stories, but I try to avoid telling it too often because it's basically trigger warnings: the story.Ironmonger wrote:@Tablets

@Black Metal
I got the "Evil Power Metal" impression from Emperor's album IX Equilibrium. To me, it sounds like a mirror image of Power Metal, with its high-pitched guitars and fast playing, but instead of an "uplifting" and operatic sound its more haunting and brutal. In the words of a Headbanger from Brutal Legend, it's fucking awesome.
Anyway, I'm just recently looking into Black Metal. I don't know who the "classics" would be besides Emperor.

No, you haven't, but I'd like to know. I know a lot of bands, Emperor included, were involved in huge crimes like church-burning and murder, but that's about it.
EDIT: You should probably PM that to me if it's that trigger-ish.

Oh, good. Now I have another anti-role model.
Every time I think that I'm going too far in being a fan of something, I can compare with that person.
Although I dread the possible future moment when I, or any fan of anything, realises that he'd become as bad as Seraphem.

- Spoilers for Content and Length:
The first thing to know is that the story of black metal doesn't begin with the beginning of black metal. The song/album "Black Metal," recorded by Venom in 1982, was what the genre took its name from (even though Venom was frankly just playing thrash on shitty equipment). Various bands experimented with the sound - buzzing guitars, tons of feedback, lots of speed, evil lyrics, blastbeats for days. Bands like Sarcofago pioneered the corpsepaint style of stagecraft alongside a brutal style of thrash. Bathory, led by the visionary Quorthon, defined the style of harsh screaming vocals with his early albums (and later would invent Viking/folk metal before dying of cancer). Hellhammer/Celtic Frost (they’re the same band) then basically created the Satanic aesthetic that would influence a lot of the second wave, alongside having Thomas Gabriel Warrior’s fantastic guitar sound (and it’s only gotten better – check out Triptykon, his current project, an extreme hybrid of doom and black). All this was happening during the 80s, and all around the world, but when you think black metal, you don’t think Sweden, or Brazil, or the 80s – you think early 90s, you think Norway, and you think Mayhem.
So, Norway. This is when and where things get interesting. Let’s look at our first character, a man – practically a kid, really – called Euronymous, and a band called Mayhem. Euronymous had a big idea – a kind of music completely inaccessible, and utterly different from the innovationless rut he thought that metal had gotten stuck in of late. He was the lead guitarist of Mayhem, the owner of a small basement records shop called Helvete, and he used both to promote his deeply transgressive ideology and music. He was an avowed Satanist, and not the nice kind that basically is just a deep believer in free will. Euronymous was a Satanist purely for the joy of provocation. It’s never been entirely clear how much of Euronymous’ persona was real and how much was an act to gain (extremely niche) fame and (minimal) fortune; what is clear is that he developed a personality cult amongst dispossessed Norwegians, centered around himself and the second wave of black metal that he believed (not without merit) he oversaw.
The second character comes in during Mayhem’s early years. The band needed a vocalist, one with the ability to belt out raw shrieks and who fit the style of the band. Dead was exactly the right man for the job. A talented performer with a unique style of black metal shrieking (if you can get hold of music with him in it, you’ll know what I mean), Dead was also… not very well in the head. Around age ten, he’d had either an ice skating accident or a run-in with some school bullies that left him with a ruptured spleen. He was pronounced clinically dead for some time, according to reports, before being resuscitated. Dead became obsessed with death, and even believed that he himself was dead – literally. (This is a condition known as Cotard’s Delusion – it’s a bit more understood nowadays then it was back then) Dead’s application to the Mayhem had a letter, a demo tape, and a crucified mouse. He was in.
Dead brought a stage presence like no other, by all accounts. He huffed rotting birds out of a bag before performing; he buried his clothing in the ground to get the smell of graverot on them; he would cut himself on stage; he would throw pig heads at the audience because “if someone doesn't like blood and rotten flesh thrown in their face they can FUCK OFF.” Unfortunately, and perhaps predictably, his mental state worsened, and his self-harm became increasingly extreme. Euronymous egged on his behaviors, until eventually Dead slit his wrists and throat with a knife and then shot himself in the head with a shotgun, out in a cabin the band used as a rehearsal space. He left a note apologizing for firing a weapon indoors, and for the mess. Euronymous, the first on the scene, immediately left to buy a disposable camera and re-arranged the scene for a photo shoot. One of these photos would later be used for the cover of a bootleg recording, the infamous Dawn of the Black Hearts. Stories continue to circulate that the band members cannibalized parts of Dead’s corpse, and made necklaces out of his skull fragments to send to those they thought “worthy.” The latter has been confirmed by surviving members of the band.
The scene continued to grow. Disaffected youth from across the Norwegian spectrum were drawn to the transgressive actions and music coming out of Helvete. Some of these youths were neo-Nazis. This brings us to character number three: Varg Vikernes, the bassist. Now, why you’d need a bassist in a black metal band is frankly beyond me, but there’s no denying that Varg was a pretty good songwriter. His own project, Burzum, has released some classic numbers, mostly from before he was imprisoned for twenty years. The authorities wouldn’t let him have a guitar in jail.
Anyway, during this time, crime was kind of rampant in the black metal scene. Satanic rebellion continued, but was now coupled with a nationalistic Pagan revival movement that saw Christianity and Western morality as an invading force that needed to be expunged from the country (AKA the neo-Nazis). These groups attacked Christian religious sites, including historic churches, with arson attacks that generated a lot of hate for the black metal scene (which, for Euronymous, was most enjoyable).
At some point during all this, Varg Vikernes, over what may have been a contract dispute, a desire to one-up another murderer at the time, or (his claim) proactive self-defense, entered Euronymous’ apartment and stabbed him 23 times. In the coming days, he was found, tried for the murder and for most of the arson cases, and incarcerated for quite a long time (incarcerated in 1994, released in 2009). Notably, during a brief parole in 2003, Varg went on the run, hijacked a car, and turned up nineteen hours later with a G3, handgun, GPS, maps, and a gasmask. He currently is living in France, where he’s under charges of inciting racial hatred against Jews and Muslims and is almost certainly guilty.
Crazily enough, Mayhem is still a band, currently fronted by Hungarian Attila Csihar, who, while being a strange person, is actually not a total insane monster! Black metal continues to flourish, too, which is nice because a mythology like that really shouldn’t be allowed to die. Far from being largely confined to Norway, these days the genre has moved international; the American scene, especially in the Pacific Northwest, is well regarded for its roots in Paganism, anarchist thought, and radical environmentalism. And that’s pretty much the creation myth of black metal!

I'm gonna use that story of black metal as a basis for how the genre formed in FoE. Judging by what we read, it seems to fit right in. Seriously, I was reminded a little of PH with how extreme that content was.
Now to figure out where the other genres came from, who made them, and why. Power Metal clearly fits the bill, its harmonious and uplifting. The others will be a little difficult.
@Scyto
Complaining doesn't bother me at all.
