I got curious after Camo's comment and everybody else's replies. I've seen that one before, it did get me the first time but not of "I shat out my heart so I could see myself have a heart attack" levels. Jump scares can be done effectively, but after so many screamers you kinda half expect them.

Though whenever I read it again the clicking noise as it quickly scrolls down at that part still bugs me in the "cold chill down the spine" way.

My own reaction was rather calm despite how I felt. I was either completely still and wide-eyed as I heard the clicking noises and saw that thing getting closer, or I jumped back slightly. Still, it was freaky to me.

Personally I think the first FEAR had the best jump scares, but that's just me.

Done right, jumpscares CAN be scary.

It's just that they're only effective when people don't actually expect them.

They can be scary, they've just always felt somewhat... cheap to me. They're one of the least difficult way of scaring someone, and they're definitely the least subtle.

Though perhaps I'm biased because I hate the pants-shitting little bastards.

@Why is the Comic Spooky?
I think it's because it establishes two things from the get-go, as do most comics: lack of motion not generated by the user, and user control of the pacing. It then completely breaks both of these, startling you. When I showed it to my sisters, I was in control of the scrolling, and it was thus a lot less startling for them. That's my theory, anyway.

A few pages back I saw that Iron had made a list of things that he's no longer allowed to do in RPs. Well I thought it looked kinda fun.

So I shamelessly ripped off his idea with much poorer rules made up these to poke fun at some of the events and tendencies of us as players. The first two come from a thing we never ended up doing.

New rules of the PHRP:

I'm going to say this just in case I have to. None of this is meant to insult just poke fun.

- Think about what their cutie mark is going to be
- Find a relevant point on which to base their name on
- Do a bit of research to find a good enough "pun" related to all of the above

Which typically can take, like, 15 minutes. Fuck.

On the other hand, naming griffin, zebra, or in fact anything but ponies is almost effortless.

You could alternatively pick a random object in your house and build a character around that.

On my desk right now I've got a note pad, a stylus, keyboard, duct tape, mason jar, cereal bowl and a controller. Oh and a headset.

Any of those names can probably flowchart your way to whatever role your character plays.
