A.) You had a bug. Common early on; mostly patched nowadays.
or
B.) You really weren't paying attention.
I've never had problems like that. On my current run, my (unarmed fighter, which notoriously suck at low levels) character headed North, skirted around Quarry Junction, stopped at the 188 to pick up Veronica and is currently heading into Freeside. No problems at all. The game actually seems to assume you'll do something like this, albeit following the main questline of looping through Primm, Nipton, and Novac--doing this means you'll 2,000 caps easily and be able to walk right through Freeside and give it little thought the rest of the game.
In other words, breaking linearity is improving my gaming experience.

To be fair, I didn't play 1, and all attempts to get 2 to fucking work on my PC are failing, but even I understand that an open-world game is supposed to be open-world. Me being a dad-gum young whippersnapper, 3 was one of the first-open world games I played, and even then I remember my naive 13-ish year-old-brain thinking "Wait, why did they go through the trouble of having me make my own character and choose my sidequests and build and stuff if I couldn't change the story at all?"swicked wrote:Because fallout 3 was linear and he liked it, then new vegas was not and he didn't.Harmony Ltd. wrote:Then why the hell bothering to try to turn nonlinear games into linear ones ?swicked wrote:I think what cb5 is saying is that linear stories are better than nonlinear since even the most determined gamer cannot ruin the story of a linear game.
He does not like or respect nonlinear games. He thinks if you try to tell more than one story, your storytelling will suffer for it.
Why ?
He's not like you and me. He didn't play 1 and 2 and doesn't know how fallout games are "supposed to be".

Apologies if I was unclear.swicked wrote:...I dunno. I have a hard time imagining that, when being introduced to the world of fallout through 3, you wouldn't expect all the games to be like it.
I don't think I quite get how character creation should be tied to controlling the story. A lot of games have character creators, nowadays.
I meant that, after all the freedom the game had given me up until that point, from blowing off any quest I didn't feel like doing to just going into the Wastes and dicking around (remember, I wasn't allowed to play most video games growing up. I wasn't used to anything open-world like an RPG) I was surprised that the big, driving missions throughout the game instead forced me to work with this smug bunch of jerks in snot-green armor to save the Wasteland (which seemed populated by about 30 sane people and a few hundred thousand Raiders, causing me to wonder why I'd bother).
My impressionable young self was nonetheless excited by the game enough to hop on the 'net and Yahoo the shit outta that shit, and I discovered that the earlier games, though using the "boring" turn-based system, were so much less limiting and more deep.

Wait, WHAT?!
Everyone drop what you're doing and get excited cause this is not a drill.
I always thought fallout equestria was too long for a animation.

Funny. The Video says they need voice actors, but in the description they're super adamant that "Disclaimer: We don't need VA's."

Maybe. But it was only posted a day ago. It'd be weird for them to have filled positions in a day, no matter how many applications they got. It seems like they made the video, filled the VA slots, then released it.cb5 wrote:They probably released the video and then got spammed by VA auditions.Scyto Harmony wrote:Funny. Considering that the viewcount is stuck at 329 views until youtube validates the viewcount we won't know how many actual views they got. Y'know, weirdly enough, I'd have sort of liked it if they went for a different style than the show. Recognizable, and taking cues from MLPFIM, but different nonetheless. It'd allow for more texture (and that means grit, literally), and it'd make comparisons between the show's animation quality and the fanwork's animation quality less... easy.
@CB5
Are we sure that's a NASA thing? I mean... the government's shut down. Their actual website isn't even online.

Would you have rather them gone for realism considering what the FoE game models look like?Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:Y'know, weirdly enough, I'd have sort of liked it if they went for a different style than the show. And yes that is a preview of the littlepip model from the game.
Yes, it's from nasa. One of their sites. Also NASA isn't completely shut down, 95% of nasa is furloughed right now, but they have to keep some people on staff. Like you can't let rocket fuel sit around without anyone keeping check on it or such. The question is what is going to be the big news?

Eesh, no. Not realism, but a different version of stylized. Like, I don't know, I'm no artist, but add more dimensionality and movement to it. More like something between Samurai Jack and Avatar or something, but definitely not 3D modeled.
And cool, then! I'll look forward to the announcement. I knew they weren't completely shut down, but it seemed like a weird time to make a superbig announcement (mind you, their LAST superbig announcement was... resoundingly meh for most people, IIRC, enough that I don't remember what it was about) when most stuff's down.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
The problem is that in order to do non-rig animation costs a fuck ton of money. It's cheaper, easier and quicker to use flash rigs. If they use flash rigs then chances are they can realistically have a movie, but if they were to actually use non-rigs for the animation we would be lucky to have a ten minute animation.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:@cb5

There is kind of good news in the long run for animation. As technology advances the cheaper and cheaper it is to do animation cause the sort of physical equipment you need to do animation yourself gets cheaper and more powerful, and the software gets better and such.
Meaning in ten years people will be able to do their own fan animations or animations a lot cheaper. Moore's law is a good idea of where technology is going. Every two years our technological capability doubles and we get better computers and such.
Where am I going with this? The budget for mlp season 4 is about 5 million(don't quote me, I haven't checked recently, but it's somewhere around there).
And that's for 26 episodes, and each episode is about 22 minutes=572 minutes in a season.
So ten years down the line-
$5,000,000/(2^5)=156250
Let's say ten years down the line someone wants to make a mlp animation(yeah let's face it there will probably be a generation 5) lasting 90 minutes
That's
([$5,000,000/(2^5)]/572)X90=$24,585
Now let's compare it to making a full length fan animated movie now in mlp flash rig format-
[($5,000,000)/572]X90=$786,713
The amount of time and energy to make a fallout equestria movie AS A FANWORK is astonishing that we actually have people willing to put that much effort and time with modern day equipment and software to do so.
Tl:dr; I'm amazed that people are actually making these fan movies.

@Rum
Inaccurate, of course. I don't know much about the economy, but I do know enough to know that that image is extremely misleading - basically lying, actually - because the US Government is not, in fact, a family, and the national debt is not a credit card. It's an institution with responsibilities to the people it serves, not a machine designed to make money. The bank can't repossess the United States if it doesn't pay exactly what it owes on its credit card; and in any case, it's not like the defaulting on your debt is a particularly clever idea, even if the family metaphor DID work (which I must assume is what the maker of the image is apparently in support of, given the current political climate). Which it doesn't. It's more like taking out a loan to buy a house so that your kids don't die when it snows, and then responsibly paying the interest... until your psychopathic brother-in-law takes control of your finances and says that you need to stop paying for the house (and for food, also!) because it costs money, and will ruin everything for everyone if he doesn't get exactly his way. And, for some reason, kicking him out isn't an option.

Ulysses orchestrated the events of the DLCs through planning and manipulation, playing everyone from Elijah and the Think Tank to the Courier him/herself for fools. As I mentioned a page or so back, it's the sort of thing that would have made a solid game had it been focused on.O.
