Well, it's not bad, as long as you don't expect anything else than a movie derivative from a saturday morning cartoon aimed at pre-teen girls.

It's light-hearted, the animation is better than the show on average (though that humanized style they went for, god...), and generally entertaining enough all the way through that you don't get (too) bored.

JUst don't expect a masterpiece.

But yeah, if you have one hour and a half to waste, don't hesitate. It's on youtube anyway.

7/10  The biggest problem with the movie is there's a lot of plot holes and they hit everyone with the idiot stick every couple of minutes. Worth a one time rental.

I left a little running commentary a few weeks back, but if you missed that, then I'll sum up my opinion of the movie with one word:

Well, if it's a serial connection, they actually only need three matrices (if you go with the USB architecture), sandwiched in three layers ; as everyone is plugged on the same circuit.

With current manufacturing techniques, that's trivial to do. As for the chipsets, they're really tiny these days, so I would think it'd not be too hard to find somewhere to place it in that mess.

If anybody is to blame for Twilight wearing the Element of Magic as a crown, it's Celestia and Luna because they was too lazy to make her an actual other crown instead of just letting the Element of Magic be the crown. Twilight, princess or not, is still going to listen to the others, especially Celestia.

Also, if anybody was crazy and determined enough to attempt to steal the Element of Magic away from the welder of it right out of their room, being locked away and guarded wouldn't have stopped them either.

If anything Twilight keeping the crown close was the smart thing anyways. Even if Sunset hadn't woken Twilight up, Twilight would have realized the crown had been stolen and replaced the next day. Had it been locked away somewhere and nobody caught Sunset in the act, the fake would have sat there with the other Elements until they needed it.

Why the fuck is the crown even a big deal? It's established in the first episode, AND the end of this movie that the psychical elements don't fucking matter! But in both this AND the Royal wedding, they just fucking forgot again?

My only other complaint is WHY IS THERE A LOVE STORY!? Goddamnit don't poison the already distilled show by giving the main character a love interest! Fucking *swoon* all over this bitch. That makes me really angry.

But the intro song was fucking awesome, so I guess the movie was okay.

Well, the love interest, is easy to explain. It's mandatory, pretty much every animated kids movie the main character always has a love interest.

Wasn't the story that the mirror had been sitting around not causing any trouble for so long that the sisters didn't even know what it did anymore beyond connecting to some other world occasionally?
I would assume, even when it had been active, it had never been a threat before. Maybe no one had ever come through it, and the sisters had only looked through it once and found an empty forest on the other side.
I'm not sure why they would feel all that threatened by it. They're ponies and, therefore, optimists at heart.

It's not called feeling threatened, rather it's called not being stupid.  If there was a mirror where you could enter a parallel universe the potential benefit to society would be incalculable as well as the risks.

If we could travel to parallel universes we could potentially find a universe where human beings have already discovered a cure for all disease, or a cure for world hunger, or a world where they have figured out how to fix poverty and such.  The risk of running into a world where hitler won WWII would be there also, but you could severe the connection.

Any great discovery invites risks and rewards and that automatically doing the stupid thing of closing off the amazing discovery and keeping it hidden away for thousands of years is probably the stupidest thing imaginable.

That is why I don't like the movie cause the entire movie everyone was acting like idiots.

1)Celestia and Luna were acting like idiots and never bothered to send a expedition team into the mirror to learn more about the world on the other side.
2)The other elements of harmony were never sent with twilight in case of emergency and sent twilight through a parallel universe with no information beforehand.
3)Celestia instead of sending a team of guards to retrieve the crown sent her student who is not a soldier.
4)Twilight wore the most powerful magic to equestria as her personal bling.
5)Twilight was sent through the mirror with no provisions.
6)Twilight was sent through the mirror with no tents or anything in case she had no where to stay and in fact was homeless in the movie and had to sleep in the library.
7)Twilight could have stolen the crown back but didn't.
8 )Human pinkie pie knew what equestria was and that Twilight was a pony princess thus negating the theory that the two worlds didn't actually know about each other, thus proving celestia was full of bs.
9)Even though the two worlds apparently do actually know about each other no previous contact has been made.
10)Even though both worlds know about each other it didn't change society and most people didn't know about it cause apparently the reaction by those that knew was, "Oh that?  It's just a magical portal to a parallel universe where magic exists thus proving magic and the multiverse theory correct thus furthering our understanding of the universe, but who cares about that?  Let's go eat the lunch food at the cafeteria cause lunch is totally more important than multiverse theory"
11)Sunset Shimmer was a generic high school bitch who thought winning prom made her the ruler.
12)Sunset Shimmer tried to conquer a parallel universe by using teenagers
13)Sunset Shimmer had no clue about how the human world operates and thus doomed to grow up to be a generic failure that doesn't understand the world around her that lives in the past of high school and doomed to probably flip burgers the rest of her life cause she didn't understand anything about the world and thus didn't know how to better herself financially
14)Sunset Shimmer's plan strategically was stupid
15)What she wanted was stupid
16)Even if she succeeded she had no understanding of how countries work and thus wouldn't know how to run a country
17)Even if she succeeded in conquering equestria chances and had someone with knowledge of how to run a country as her right hand chances are she would have gotten her ass kicked by another species, like dragons or changelings.
18)Changelings could have assassinated her and taken her place.
19)She would have gotten assassinated within ten seconds
20)Sunset Shimmer has about the intelligence of a potato
21)The magic mirror if she tried to invade equestria could have just been place over a wood chipper

It's almost certainly not a parallel universe, though, but rather an outgrowth of the Equestrian universe. The odds of parallel evolution to that extent alongside such massive differences are microscopic. Hence, the "mirror" - it's a distorted reflection of the Equestriaverse, and its rules and logics break down with the introduction of actual Equestrians.

That's my theory, anyway.

Celestia trolls everyone. Luna gets made fun of and shunned on nightmare night after being ignored for an eternity, including at the gala, when there was no reason for her not to be there.
Luna is a sympathetic character. Celestia is a jerk.

Probably the best thing about this series is that it's so simple that you can pretty much just work with anything. Celestia is terribly written, and thus doesn't represent the great leader she is implied to be. So, like I do, you can just consider it as that she's NOT a good ruler, but there are plenty of reasons why she might be in power and beloved anyways.
