Due to the graphic and immature nature of the following program, we suggest you don't listen to it. *Pause* At all. *Pause* No, seriously. The next sixty minutes contains scatalogical humor and cringeworthy sexual innuendos. Don't say we didn't warn you.

I wasn't either of these things, though. Like, maybe I was told enough times that it was k to be gay that my subsequent denials worked along similar lines, but that'd probably be about the extent of it. Guys can be pretty and stuff, but I'm just not turned on much by the idea of having sex with 'em. /shrugMister Frost wrote:This. Regarding my earlier post, incidentally, there's definitely emphasis on "much" by the way. Sometimes things get a bit fluid.

Unrelated to anything, it's been brought to my attention that it's suicide awareness week.
Naturally it's more about making people try to do more to prevent suicides rather than going "Yes, they happen" and to that all I can say is while I may not be on all the time and available to talk, I am willing to listen to any and everybody here if you need me.

Speaking of engines and explosions there was something interesting I read a couple days ago about rockets. This company, I can't remember their name, is working on a hybrid plane/space plane. The cool thing about is it that the theory behind it is pretty sound, cause it'll rely on actually taking off the ground like a plane and as the atmosphere gets thinner and thinner rely on liquid fuel instead.Mister Frost wrote:AHA! Depends if your car adjusts the mixture; most don't. However in small aircraft, the pilot does this manually-- he controls how fast the explosions happen, and how much fuel is burning in the cylinder when it happens.

That would be Reaction Engine's SKYLON orbiter, designed to show off their new fancy ramjet/rocket enginecb5 wrote:Speaking of engines and explosions there was something interesting I read a couple days ago about rockets. Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
The problem with most internal combustion engines is that they lose a lot of energy from the engine to the actual wheels. A more effecient way some companies are looking at right now is to have a extremely small engine that charges a battery or powers the wheels and have the moter in the actual wheels. The reason why that system is better is that any excess power is stored in the battery and while it does lose energy the amount of loss is far less.StoneSlinger88 wrote:Depends if your car adjusts the mixture; most don't. For those of us whose tech-literacy ends at 'point gun at thingy and pull trigger', what's the approximate cost-per-pound of transporting things to space with SKYLON as opposed to the shuttle system?

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I think it's only about a $100 to the pound instead and the overall plane is cheaper in the long run and not to mention a single stage plane versus a multistage rocket would scare potential space tourists less. So if you wanted to go to space it would cost a couple tens of thousands of dollars instead of a couple million.Mister Frost wrote:For those of us whose tech-literacy ends at 'point gun at thingy and pull trigger', what's the approximate cost-per-pound of transporting things to space with SKYLON as opposed to the shuttle system?
The problem with the shuttle system is that it's fucking expensive. If anything we should be glad our space shuttles got scrapped, cause of the costs.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
The site doesn't say beyond 'Order of magnitude reduction in cost vs. existing technology', but getting something into orbit using the shuttle costed $10,000 per pound, PER POUND, remember, a gallon of water weighs eight pounds, so you get very expensive very fast. SKYLON because it uses the ramjet to get up to mach 5, plus the shuttles were from the 80's so stuff like electronics are a lot lighter now, plus it will be unpiloted, though it doesn't look like it'll have as much payload as the shuttle did.Mister Frost wrote:For those of us whose tech-literacy ends at 'point gun at thingy and pull trigger', what's the approximate cost-per-pound of transporting things to space with SKYLON as opposed to the shuttle system?

Well they was the cheapest and safest things at the time. Obviously that changed but they where useful while they lasted.
Though the fact the shuttles got scrapped means that the economy around the Kennedy Space Center took a major hit because there's nobody going down there to watch the show anymore.
Me and my cousin went down there to see the last shuttle launch, it was worth it.

I knew it was something outrageous, but the figure of $10,000 is still surprising.
It's going to be a while (a long while, based on interest) yet before the average person can afford to go to space, but the development is encouraging.
Again, I'll PM that link to anyone who wants it

BUT, amount of tourism the kennedy space center took in vs the costs of actually launching the space shuttle is not even close to worth it.Moodyman90 wrote:Well they was the cheapest and safest things at the time. Obviously that changed but they where useful while they lasted.

Personally the biggest problem with our current ideas on space and space travel is we like to go big. We always invision the far future as having city sized space craft able to transport hundreds of thousands of people and land on a alien planet and exit no problem. Realistically speaking if we ever do have large space craft able to transport that amount of cargo chances are it will be constructed in space and never enter a planet's atmosphere or land on any planet and instead shuttle cargo back and forth using smaller craft.
When we ever start colonizing space we'll all probably have a shuttle to take us to a interplanetary vessel instead, because the idea of us ever making something capable of transporting millions of people into space in one go is too fucking ridiculous.
