God that made me laugh so much. You deserve that lick.
Thing is, it's true. I bought an average gaming PC with a decent CPU but as soon as I had it, I had to upgrade. First came fans, then I decided to get a new screen for it. When the GPU then lagged under the higher resolution, it was then time for a new GPU, quickly after came a new power supply for the GPU and a new case along with it. After that I got an SSD and even now I'm considering a new set of fans along with a new CPU once the next generation comes out for AMD and in time, a second GPU and after that, a new screen.

I'm definitely a PC gamer, but I... really don't do the upgrades thing. I'm more of a "anything above 30 FPS starts to look unnatural" kind of guy. =P I have a nice monitor I can plug into my laptop, but I don't because it would limit my ability to move around with my computer. I am a disgrace to the glorious PC gaming master race.

Anything below 40fps looks jagged to me. 50+ is smooth.
If you've got a 120hz monitor... fuck, anything below 75 once you're used to those is jagged, apparently.
I can play consoles (30fps on BF3) but they ARE clunky to me now.
20fps is unplayable for an FPS for me.

In all seriousness, I couldn't watch or play Call of Duty, and the original launch trailers for MGS4 looked wrong because of the high framerate. It's not as bad for me as it was, by any means, but I was used to a stableish 30 or so FPS; smoother than that starts to feel fake, unreal, and makes things feel like they have less impact. It's like the jump from prosthetics to CGI in horror movies, for me - the feeling started going away when the CGI and graphics and animations got better. Probably comes from having sunk so many hours into Oblivion on a computer that could just barely run it right.

As for FPSes, mostly I don't seem to play them these days, but I was raised on Insurgency (HL2 mod), which didn't rely on framerate all that much. More on camping, good room clearing practices, and abusing the draw distance glitches in the source engine to scout out where enemies were. =P Also suppressing the crap out of everything everywhere.

Framerate hasn't been a problem with anything but Minecraft for me. My GPU is not very old, maybe less than a year, but my processor is from 2007 and my OS(XP SP3) is from 2008, both need to be upgraded soon.
