Don't be ridiculous. We all know that Harry Potter was just a ploy to teach kids about Satanism and witchcraft, brainwashing them away from their Real True Christian families

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I know I shouldn't, but I found out something about religion that's interesting the other day. The decline of religion in western society's best explanation to date is simply that it's causing it itself. By that I mean it's trying to hard to retain it's past membership numbers to sustain itself and in the process is annoying the fuck out of a ton of people and thus alienating them.Mister Frost wrote:Don't be ridiculous. To give a analogy imagine you go to a gym on average once a month. You like this gym, you like the people and it feels good to get pumped up. The problem is they're annoying as fuck about trying to get you to come to the gym often, calling you up asking when you're next coming to the gym, sending you cards in the mail about promotional offers, being rude if you say you went to another gym or are interested in another gym, coming to your home when it's your time to go to the gym and buzzing your door asking if you are ready to go to the gym, constantly giving you pamplets about what sorts of exercise are good for you, and saying that you should be a exercise fanatic and telling you that you should come to the gym every day and exercise every day. Even on days that you simply just want to sleep in cause you're off work.
The moral of this is that: If you constantly annoy the living daylights out of someone and pester them 24/7 eventually they won't want to hang out with you.

I make it no secret that I'm a Christian myself, but I really, really can't disagree with that. I haven't consistently attended church in a few years just because of how annoying they can be about spending all my time there and having few close friends outside the church. It doesn't help how smug they can be.
So, yeah. A lot of Western society, in my experience, at least, is religious (if only weakly) by belief, but not by affiliation

Got back from seeing Pacific Rim.
I've seen the movie before. Not in one go, not in one certain media, but I've seen it all before.
And I love every second of it.

I'm cool with pretty much anyone wanting to have their own beliefs and is whatevs about the topic, but that's pretty much why I'm agnostic. Not really anything wrong with christianity or such, I was just getting annoyed the fuck out of. Some days people just want to sleep in cause of work or such, and calling someone at 7am after they pulled a ten hour shift working and busting their back with their everything sore to remind them to come today is not the best way to retain membership.Mister Frost wrote:I make it no secret that I'm a Christian myself, but I really, really can't disagree with that. It was especially annoying for me considering that most people at just about every church I've been to were straight-edge, very smug about it, and most were near-completely sheltered from the real world, from their upbringing to the present

- some of My opinions on religion and teachings, may offend:
- I support the positive effect religious teachings have on people. Morality and a sense of right and wrong, for example. What I don't agree with is how people are indoctrinated into it. Raising a child as a religious one, in my opinion, deprives them of being able to really choose for themselves if they want to be religious or not. To me, that's not right. The child's mind is so malleable they'll believe almost anything, they can't ask 'does this make sense?' and all the other questions one should be able to ask when deciding to be religious. I grew up believing God existed until I was 8-ish, and that was just from cultural osmosis, as my parents never did try to get me to believe or not to. It was simply a truth, 'God exists', I heard it enough that it was simply true. What caused me to change that view is lost to me now, but sometime between then and a few years ago, I simply stopped believing.
What I consider myself now is a secular humanist and an atheist(due to agnosticism), but not an anti-theist. They aren't the same thing and I hate it when they are considered the same.

Me personally, the short version is was extremist fundamentalist for a couple years, but slowly lost my faith because extremely sheltered church and church members tried to keep me as one of them without even lacking the basis for understanding what was going on. If someone has never been hungry or in extreme pain then how could they understand it?
Like if you never in your life have been hungry then how do you know what hunger is?

Personally I was born and raised Methodist. Add that to the fact I'm in the so called Bible belt and the bible thumping South... yeah.
I have my beliefs set deep within Christian doctrine, but I try keep an open mind, usually don't criticize others beliefs, and try not to force my beliefs on others. All in all, I believe that people should believe in whatever they want to, and if somebody wants to convert to something else then be supportive and helpful. Even if it something you don't believe in.
On to Pacific Rim.

- Pacific Rim talk.:
- For an in universe justification of why they used one huge robot rather then a squad of smaller ones, chances are they figured the huge ones were more cost effective in the long run. And the whole "Bigger is better" thing. Could also be a power thing. Cheaper to make one big reactor than a bunch of smaller ones.
I'm throwing stuff at the wall here. As for why it needed to be actual pilots rather then remote control, the easy answer is that pilots could react faster in the fight than people miles away watching cameras and monitors.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the issue of religion. The way I see it, religion, and beliefs in general, are like penises: It's okay to have one. It's okay to be proud of it. It's even okay to offer to share it. Just don't whip it out in public or shove it down kids' throats.
- Pacific Rimness:
- Of course, there's also the issue that the big!Jaegers represent several billion dollars per unit, conservatively. the small!Jaegers, on the other hand, are "only" a few hundred million, and, as discussed, would actually be in a good deal less risk

I guess I might as well jump in.
I went in expecting giant robots punching the ever-loving crap out of giant monsters, and that's exactly what I got. And really, that's all I feel the movie needed to be. I know everyone loves to overanalyze things here, and hey, that's fine, that can be fun, but really, Pacific Rim is a dumb movie with great set pieces and sexy action segments, and I'm fine with that.

- More Pacific Rim goodness:
Well as stated in the film the first working Jaeger was slapped together in 14 months so it's obviously going to be huge and bulky. And it was able to kill the target with ease. Couple that with the fact the whole program is being funded by suits and ties, who was once against stated in the film as being idiots, they probably saw a couple of big robots more viable rather than a squad of smaller ones. And when the kaiju showing up started to get bigger, it was probably never an option of "make smaller ones"
I see your point but if it was ever brought up in the films universe chances are the conversation went "Make smaller robots? But the big ones are working so well!"
And when the Jaegers started to be destroyed left and right, it probably went "MAKE SMALLER ROBOTS! The big ones are being taken down faster than we can build them and you want us to make them smaller!?!"
If it was ever an option it was probably shot down. Actually makes a good parallel to films. Why make smaller, unique films when big action blockbusters are a safe bet. And when those Blockbusters start failing then what chance do smaller films have?
I'm not saying I agree with that, and I do wish it was different, but there you go.

- Pacified Rimjob:
- Of course, those same suits & ties are also going to be concerned about the cost--those robots, realistically, are going to wear out very quickly and be very, very maintenance-intensive. Squads of smaller, simpler robots (some of which could be ready-to-go while others are in the shop) would appeal to their wallets.

I don't know if that means I won, you won, or if we should call it a draw.
Besides, the real answer is that this was a giant robot vs giant monster movie. If we're lucky we may get Gundam like mecha movies in the future, maybe even a squad of robots vs monsters eventually, but it wasn't this movie.
Now if I was to really nit-pick it would be the use of the "let's introduce these awesome pilots and Jaegers just to see them killed off later" thing. I know why they did it, the same reason they do the same thing in other movies, but still.

Hey, maybe we'll get a sequel. Except, due to the massive leaps and bounds in technology that, ironically, the war forced humanity to take, it's set a hundred years in the future when humanity has spread and colonized across dozens of worlds, and a bunch of alien dickbags are trying to kill us. And now it's up to a massive army of Jaegers to save the day/night/dusk/local-time-equivalent

Yeah, that's probably going to be the case.
Ron Perlman was good for how little he was in the movie. Also makes you wonder just how his character ended up in his line of work as well.
