You know, even with a strictly enforced mobilization plan involving a generalized use of rape factories, women can pop-out only so many babies...

And when they can't pop out any more, just slap a katana in their hand and throw 'em onto the plane

Not really. At a minimum, you need to wait for at least 6 years before a human can actually be used for anything, even just pushing buttons (before that there's no assurance that they will even understand your orders and press the wrong buttons at the wrong time). The entirety of WW2 happened in that timespan. And let's not even talk about the quantity of food they have to ingest during that period, and medications and other items of basic maintenance.
On the other hand, with your reasonably fed slaves you can crank out thousands upon thousands of ordinance per day even in the shoddiest of clandestine manufacture with the right tools (see : the Israeli secret ammunition factories during the early days).

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Of course, at higher technology levels, it gets reversed. Factories can be cheaply mechanized or even entirely automated, research can be done by small teams working hand-in-hand with an heavily mechanized and drone-utilizing military, with most flesh-and-blood actual soldiers (rather than techs) being some variant of infiltration or special forces. Farming can be done by small numbers of workers assisted by plenty of machines.
Meanwhile, you've got a veritable horde of proletariats doing practically nothing but make-work, always growing at an ever-increasing rate, demanding more and more of your resources go to farming (you can't have a mine and a farm in the same place, and mineral resources are getting scarce) pharmaceuticals, textiles, ect. A sufficiently authoritarian regime might reinstitute conscription or forced labor just to get some sort of use out of them

I want to see more WW2 movies from the point of view of the Soviets. Or Japan. Or hell, even Germany.
Kinda jaded from all the 'Murca fuck yeah surrounding the genre...

Well, it's hard to blame the filmmakers for making movies and telling stories that directly pertain to the target audience--many of them actually had ancestors that served.
Of course, I've yet to watch the video (3G being a bit too slow to watch Youtube videos)

Of course. But when it's to the point that people start believing that America won WW2 single-handedly, I think we can safely say that shit's getting out of hand and people need to be reminded of some basic facts.

You seem to think that's only the movie industry.
Basically, until we get to high school or even college in a lot of cases we are taught that Europe was getting spanked by the Germans until America swooped in and kicked ass.
As a result, that is what the american people like to see, and since most of the big war-movies are made in America, that's what is made and presented. There are of course a few deviations, but for the most part americans don't care that we had allies in WWII, so movie makers don't bother focusing on anyone else.
In other words: Winners write history the way they want it to be seen.

The thing is that Russia and ex-USSR countries have apparently produced and still produce a lot of WW2 movies concentrating on their side of the story, but for various reasons it doesn't reach the west.
This is a thing I find a bit... well, I'd say it's a "missed opportunity" on the part of Russia that it doesn't push its own culture past its frontiers more, out of its immediate vicinity. It would surely help restore the global relevance it seeks, relevance it lost after the fall of the USSR.
That's a thing China has understood, and why it's opening so many cultural-sharing centers around the world, to try to spread its influence in the cultural sphere worldwide.

A Bridge Too Far did a good job at showing every party involved, even showed some Canadians and the Polish, and they get very little coverage at all.
I haven't been taught much of Canada's military history at all in school, which is probably a cultural thing.
We also get pretty much only American movies, and most of them(almost all) show the Americans as the big heroes, as expected. Of course, this stems from most films being American. As important as the American forces were in every conceivable way, the Commonwealth fought a war in almost all theatres(off the top of my head, China and Eastern Europe come to mind as ones they didn't participate directly in) from the start of the conflict right up until the end.
It's not that the American populace doesn't have much to be proud of in the way of military history, if that's their thing. They essentially provided the means for the Allies to win WW2 in the end, if not in direct action then in supply.

According to some sources I've heard, the Canadians were quite feared by the Germans on the Western front, even more than the British or Americans (troop-for-troop, at least. I'm not sure what numbers they fielded in comparison). I can't speak for Canada, but America, at least, is a culture that glorifies the soldier, and it's a nation that has solved just about all its problems, from independence to resource crises, through violence. That's why messages like "violence is never the answer" tend to fall on deaf ears in America: violence, historically, is nearly always the answer

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Canadian soldiers during the World Wars were apparently quite feared, especially in the First, where they were known as very effective assault forces. WW2 saw them as more like auxiliaries in British formations, but they did participate in successful operations such as the Operation Charnwood and the Normandy Landings, notably making the most progress towards D-Day objectives despite projected strongest resistance.(Omaha Beach was a harder fight due to better organization in defence and lack of specialized vehicles used by the Canadians and British, IIRC.)
One thing about the Canadians, though, in WW2 almost none of the troops(a very small number, IIRC) sent to Europe were conscripts. They were all volunteers, they wanted to fight. WW1 had general conscription, though, and WW2 saw conscription for home service.
Keep in mind, Canada is much smaller than the United States in population, and would've been during both periods. They wouldn't have sent nearly as many soldiers as the US or Britain did, I think. But, it's often thought that Canadians 'punch above their weight', so to speak. Apparently this was true in the Afghanistan conflict as well.
Culturally, the World Wars are seemingly remembered with less glory attached than with Americans, but that's just how I see things.

They probably get that reputation from Canada only really having two Special Forces combat units, so I guess you get all the really skilled operators in them and they get all the tough jobs. Joint Task Force 2, and the Canadian Special Operations Regiment, JTF2 gets a lot more credit than the latter.Mister Frost wrote:Canada's counter-terrorist unit is supposed to be pretty hardcore, from what I've heard
The US has a bunch of units considered to be Special Forces, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure they're just as capable, if not more. I know they do all sorts of cross-training.

Just off the top of my head, there's the Navy SEALS, the Green Berets, the Air Force Ravens, Delta Force, MARSOC, Force Recon, and (though low on the totem pole) the Rangers, I believe, are also under SOCCOM command

SOCOM has almost as many troops as Canada has active personnel in all branches, to put it into perspective.

Don't be ridiculous. Bin Laden was a fabrication of the Big Oil companies, so they could continue aborting babies with the help of their moon-landing-faking studio. The actor was the same guy that shot JFK
