Edit: Omega literally means 'great'. That might be why it's used in that context.

It's also a difference in iterations. In sociology, like a wolf pack, it's more of a Top 10 list, where 1 is 1st, and then 10th is lowest down. However, in things like weapons, its more like said Omega is the final iteration of the weapon, a la the difference between MkI and MkII. It's a later version, improved to be more powerful.
