I was going to try Debian but I never actually got around to it. I'm still using Windows XP, simply because it works with the older games I play with no problems and, most importantly, I'm familiar with it. XP does have a few problems which will eventually force me into 7:
RAM limit is 3 gigabytes, new games are starting to not be made to work with it, something causes some programs to be very slow (including my two antivirus programs and Steam), to name a few.
Whenever I look for assistance with running a game, I usually see something along the lines of "run it as administrator", which just makes it look ridiculous. Tech support for XP is harder to find, too.
Meh, when I do get it I'll probably love it, but in the mean time I'll stick with what I know.
I use Microsoft Office because my school uses it, thus I'm familiar with it. And I didn't pay for it.

So I finally saw the Luna toy over at Toys R Us, and it just pissed me off how it looks more like Twilight being an imposter. Frost and I are now talking about buying a bunch of the little pony figurines, stripping the paint, and repainting them into the various FoE characters. Problem being there are no stallions.

I know that this was a while ago (by the standards of this thread) but I figured that I might as well respond since no one else has.O. Hinds wrote:Any opinions on this?
"The Equestrian year is 352 days long, 32 eleven-day lunar cycles divided into eight four-cycle (44-day) months, each season lasting for two months. Each day is composed of sixteen hours, each of which is composed of 64 minutes, each of which is composed of 64 seconds (each mark on the face of an eight-hour clock being equal to eight seconds for the second hand, eight minutes for the minute hand and one hour for the hour hand).
If we say that an Equestrian and Earth day are the same length, that means that an Equestrian second is equal to 1.318359375 Earth seconds, approximately, and an Equestrian year is equal to about 0.96 Earth years. One Equestrian hour is one and one half Earth hours exactly."
I favor a twenty-four hour day, with three revolutions around the clock—likely nighttime, morning and afternoon, breaking at noon and the eight-hour mark on either side. Using divisions of sixty-four within that, we get one Equestrian second equaling 0.87890625 Earth seconds, almost twenty percent closer (31.8% vs 12.1% off, and, yes, it is completely coincidental). Not that "exceptionally close to our timescale" is too much of a requirement.
Both scales fit a base-8 numeral system nicely. The only thing not breaking on a 0 or halfway is the week, and that being timed for the lunar cycle gives a nice excuse. I can imagine the discussions between the princesses when the system was being introduced. It even ties in with a plausible physical method of counting to explain the development of base-8: binary with four hooves (though that does introduce yet another base at the same time).
@Sintel
Amazing movie. For anyone who hasn't seen it, do so.
@Software
I'm running Linux over my originally Windows laptop as well. (Started with Ubuntu and switched to Mint when Gnome 3 came out, but am now working with i3 instead of MATE...) I do recommend some derivation of Debian—which includes all variants of both Ubuntu and Mint—if anyone is interested in checking it out. If you have any spare CDs lying around, it's not too difficult to burn one and boot from that without installing anything on your computer; just know that the slower speed is a result of running through the CD and not a drawback to Linux. And don't expect Linux to be as large a contender in gaming for several years at the earliest, though Valve is now working on porting Steam over.
I did start using OpenOffice before I switched, but since MS Office isn't made for Linux, I've gotten even more used to it in the past couple of years. It's definitely not as user-friendly as Office, but most features can be emulated by working through the options: word count's in a separate dialog (Tools menu, but can also be added to the bottom with an extension) and ellipsis consolidation can be added to the auto-correct list manually (at which point it will function normally), though I don't think there's anything for the color themes. Most importantly in my mind (which admittedly might be opposite what others think), is that it uses XP-style toolbars rather than the Vista+ ribbon.
Finally, I'm thinking I might be interested in joining an RP over on fallout-equestria.com once I know I'll have the time (could be a while from now, depending). I have played with several offline PnP systems, but I've never really done anything online beyond learning that non-scheduled play-by-posts don't really work for me, and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with that community or their rulesets. Anything to be aware of, even if it's just in the change of medium? Or is there some other hub you prefer?

as for word processors, I've always used word because that's what all my schools have had and the fact that my dad always shells out for it because it's the 'industry standard' or something

Oh, if someone pay for you, no problem, Word IS good. Really good. Same thing if you make a professional use of it, it IS the industry standard (though there's a lot of business nowadays which use Open Office or Libre Office)stringtheory wrote:as for word processors, I've always used word because that's what all my schools have had and the fact that my dad always shells out for it because it's the 'industry standard' or something
What I'm saying is if you're just a normal, non-professional user, the odds are, like, above 95% that you'll never use even half of the functionalities of Word or Excel. So you'd be served as well by using Open Office or Libre Office, without having to shell a single buck.

My Little Fortress: Friendship is Magma - Rampage Edition 2.0 is almost done.
Actually, it is in enough of a "done" condition that I'm playtesting it now.
It will be my New Year present to the WORLD! *thunderclap*

A friend of mine also favors the three-cycle idea, though he didn't go into as much detail as you. Your "morning, evening, night" system does at least explain why they might be using three cycles. And the closer second is good... Thanks!WovenTales wrote:I know that this was a while ago (by the standards of this thread) but I figured that I might as well respond since no one else has.O. MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. I usually just use TextEdit, and for the occasional heavier word processing job I've got a copy of Pages from iWork 06. I've also got OpenOffice for spreadsheets and opening things made with Microsoft Office.stringtheory wrote:I'm using a mac book pro running lion, which has a partition of windows on it (yes I know this is a stupid thing, lets move on), and I'm saving up for a gaming rig

...You know there's probably a group in the wastes that are basically extremist Christians but for Luna and Celestia and due to the only picture they have of her slightly tinged pink, they basically portray her this way.
"Celestia died for your sins Heathen!"
I imagine that Lilpip and Celestia's reaction to this will ether be to ignore it and let them be or try and convince them of the truth is met the same way as Blackjack and the Stable Dweller.

That's the funky chemicals, mate. There's more than just caffeine in energy drinks, and some of them are tailored specifically to enhance concentration and the like, theoretically. Their efficacy has not, in all cases, been established. I wouldn't recommend drinking more than like two cans in a short period of time, though; even I start feeling funny after that much.Ironmonger wrote:I've discovered that Monster energy drinks seem to help me stay on track and more focused. As far as I know, one isn't supposed to drink more than two in one day. They really help me out, but I wouldn't gulp them down like a glutton.

@Harmony: I wrote that before I read it, and was too lazy to change xD But the tits would be quite far from being the equivalent of the dick heh. Can see it as being a technique that made any outie and innie... or vice versa... *shivers* xD Not sure it stated if it ripped off the dick though, only that it was so painful that even pain would be hurt xP
@Iron: Gx. Mine costed me like... ~900 € I guess it'd be. But then again, it can play NV and stuff hehe :3
(Ripping off) Yeah, you can often find yourself paying unneeded money for programs you don't "need".
@EP: (Sintel) Ah, I remember this :P
And haha! I've got the material I need for my flash! ... fuck you trace bitmap! Why do you have to be so hard? xD

I just had this moment of awesome in Team Fortress 2. I and another Heavy buddied up and went around the map with our guns revved, he with Sasha and I with the Natascha. It was a surprisingly inspirational moment because one heavy weapons expert is intimidating, but two is terrifying. There's going to be a back-to-back gunfight moment in my story because of that. The Brothers Heavy! :D
