Glad you don't think I'm stupid. I just like to joke about it sometimes, if you can joke about something like that then...well crap I don't remember how the rest of that goes. On another note, my research into learning disabilities is more interesting than I thought it would be. It helps with creating fictional characters. My study has me wondering if autistic people have the same issues (I know a person can have both autism and adhd/add) as people with ADHD/ADD. The two conditions seem to have similarities despite working differently. Never thought I would find this kind of stuff interesting.Admiral Stoic Rum wrote:Iron you're not a dumb ass... you have a permanent bright shiny object syndrome

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
So, I was searching the internet for alternative to fossil fuels in commercial airliners, looking to see if liquid hydrogen was considered a viable alternative, and it seems that the engineering constraints associated with the use of LH2 in commercial aviation would force a major change in how planes are designed (link).
Apparently, the need for thermal isolation would mean that airplanes using LH2 couldn't store it in their wings.
So, thinking about it... Instead of putting the tanks in the "cigare" of the typical airplane shape and having unused volume in the wings, why not make... flying wings ?

Hell, the B-2 bomber that the U.S. Military uses can fly around the globe. The flying wing-shape in general is fantastically efficient.
It's low profile and high cost would make freight and such impractical with it, but for passenger transport it's phenomenal. At least, this is coming from the perspective of a person with only moderate knowledge of aviation

I had a design for a starship shaped like a flying wing for optimal combat efficiency (less of a target), but that was back when Frost and I still worked on that stuff. Anyone think the flying wing design would work for say...a flying warship for ponies?

In which way would a flying wing be less practical than todays flying cigars for fret purpose ? They tend to have more room inside them for the same wingspan, after all.

Only if you take it from the front, the back or the sides (and even then this is debatable). A flying wing is an even bigger target than a traditional plane if you take it from above or below.Ironmonger wrote:I had a design for a starship shaped like a flying wing for optimal combat efficiency (less of a target)
And air defence generally tend to come from below AFAIK.

I'm no expert, but if I'm right the lower profile would mean the hold is generally too low to house large vehicles like a transport plane can

- Spoiler:
- If I were in a better condition, I could likely refer to one of my several dozen posts about this. But right now I'm not sure if I got the stamina for it... really trying to recall what I was talking about, but I will try and mention what I was referring to. Lets see... first we got all "male references" and cock jokes. Especially going with how Equestria was a matriatchy, and how BJ's home was one, the fact she "thinks" and "favours" so much "male" is really perplexing. Like many chapters back, BJ referred to males as the "stronger gender". (not in those words, but she was going to refer to physical strength, and she referred to a male.) Which as said, "makes sense" if you go with "our" logic, but for BJ, it would not make much sense at all. She ought to have reversed genus, and in most of the time, she doesn't. That is one of the things that ticks me off about PH, that so many things are treated just like the stereotypes and norms of our world. Especially when they have little to no sense being there. It makes quite a few things not feel very "thought through" so to speak. They make sense if you don't "question" them or however I put it. BJ has done this SEVERAL times, and I've nagged a bit on each and every one of them, almost. Along with everytime the "world" does something lame that is bland and generic that "makes sense" to our world, but not Equestria.
Then comes the generic "FEEL FOR THEM!" moments. From what I recall, every time we've been tossed a Crusader to "feel sorry for", it always follows the same archetype: It's a filly, she's been raped and she lost someone. Always the same. Here I generally deadpan on the whole stereotype of female victims, which as said, is a very stagnant and badly used theme in PH, which I know you know that I've mentioned. That (only, but all male) raiders (and every other wastelander) always rapes mares and fillies, but as colts are males, they can't be raped. And all stallions want to have sex anyhow, thus can't be raped. Making P-21 the only male in the wasteland to ever have been sexually used, and he only got that since he was in one of the most fucked up stables in the wasteland, one where mares were capable of something as horrible as rape. Whilst all civilized raider mares know better than that, they have a strict moral code of what they can and can't do apparently. Which a seeming 99 % of all wasteland mares strictly follow as they know better than males. Which are just single minded rapists for the majority as it seems. (one of which moment was the slaver BJ de-horned. Which a male slave did a "durr, I'm going out for revenge on this ex-slaver and her daughter, since I have nothing better to do. And since I am a stallion, I only know of one thing to do: Rape!". Then came the Flashers who turned out to be a huge disappointment in more than one way, especially the part they are a faction of rape victims dedicated to forgiving their rapists more or less. And the part with the steel ranger being all "Oh, I enjoyed the sex, since I am male, and all men like sex." Erf, feels like I am trailing off far too much here.
Can mention two other moments: One was when BJ saw "Goldenblood the pony" and instantly forgave everything he had done, since "hey, she NEEDED to" (along with Flutter so far seeming only falling in love with him since "she NEEDED to", having no good, logical or even plausible reason, she just did since she should for plot convenience. Same goes for Twi when her and Shy was just used as two wombs, reduced to their most biological function. Again, with no good reason or explanation other than "they HAD too". To me, it would make as much sense as P-21 insisting to inseminate Rampage or someone, since he has testicles with functional sperm, it's what he HAS to do.) and then just after that going with that all readers should have forgiven Golden as well, seeing him as BJ does. It's these "feel like x" moments that really ticks me off. Where something at times outright stupid happens, and all just agree and move along with it since "it HAD to happen", acting like it was funny/good/natural. And another being when Medly died of neglect. None really gave a fuck or tried to help her, stood and whined about stuff. Then Glory got a hard-on after the filly stopped breathing and went to fuck BJ, ignoring doing anything like the rest of the village, waiting until Medly needed desperate medical attention, effortlessly dug her up, then just hauled her away without a care as her life slipped away as if nothing had happened, since she HAD to fuck BJ. Then said ponies acted all sad a bit later, despite the fact they had neglected her to death when there was plenty of ways to have saved her. Blah... not sure if I even make sense here, so will cut it here. But yeah, hope any or most of that made sense. Overall, there's quite a few really stupid things in PH if you actually "look" at it. Like Styg and Psycho, and that whole ordeal among other things. So anyhow... there's quite a few "hollow" moments in PH that are just after "pity" with some bland, generic sob story. There are plenty of stereotypes that has no right being in said world if you go with the lore and what have you. (just for random example: like someone saying "oh my god!" instead of "oh my goddess!" for most of us, the former makes "more sense", but for a world that had two of the latter, it does not.)
Edit: Oh, and also many of the whole "they NEEDED to", like I mentioned before have had these moments where Somber has character do something since "reason x", but yet several other or certain other characters did not need to do x. Like the "they're not made of stone!" then have Rampage go 50 years without sex. Also that BJ "HAD" to deal with her rape trauma in one of the most direct and dangerous ways she could, whilst no other character had "NEEDED" to deal with it so to speak. Along with the only part that kept a cyberpony "alive/sane" was their genitals, yet the professor has gone for years without even having hers attached. Things like that.
@OAC: (shipping) Yeah... will likely not order anything for quite a few years or months to come. That ~250 $ shipping cost for 19 ibs was not okay anywhere.

That shape has other advantages too, such as lower noise. The main reason it hasn't already been adopted is the fact that airports aren't equipped to service it.Harmony Ltd. wrote:So, I was searching the internet for alternative to fossil fuels in commercial airliners, looking to see if liquid hydrogen was considered a viable alternative, and it seems that the engineering constraints associated with the use of LH2 in commercial aviation would force a major change in how planes are designed (link).

As an alternative to total conversion to H2, piston engine aircraft could be run on biodiesel and turbine engines on the jet fuel equivalent (jet fuel and diesel are already pretty similar, and, though I don't actually know, I expect that making synthetic jet fuel would not be that much more difficult). For longer trips that need to be made more quickly, here's something else from REL.
This is an interesting coincidence; I was just pondering this the other day. Most of the work I've done so far is on how to make the helicopter (helicopters rather than rotodynes to make folding the rotor blades easier) shuttles work, but I'm thinking a 300m wingspan, water-landing-only vehicle. Of course, there's a good chance that it would be extremely impractical, but I'm not letting that stop my idle pondering. At the moment I'm wondering if it could also carry, launch, and retrieve a Vetribus...Ironmonger wrote:I had a design for a starship shaped like a flying wing for optimal combat efficiency (less of a target), but that was back when Frost and I still worked on that stuff. Also, any thoughts on making balefire equivalents to casaba-howitzers? I was just roughly thinking out a duel between an Alliance ACSAW (Alliance Command and Support Airborne Wing) and an NCR Hurricane-class cloudship, and a balefire CH warhead on an air-to-air missile would be useful for getting through the Hurricane's AAA.

I think the Star Destroyer shape from Star Wars is a really smart design personally, at least in a capitol ship vs capitol ship fight, as it allows the Star Destroyer to fire nearly all of it's guns (depending on how they're laid out) in a massive frontal barrage, while minimizing hits thanks to the low profile, and anything which does hit could easily be shrugged off because you'd be maximizing shielding/armor in that area, even if you're being attacked from the side you'd still have a pretty low profile, depending on the exact design, only problem is with fighters/strikecraft, which could easily hit the much larger top and bottomIronmonger wrote:I had a design for a starship shaped like a flying wing for optimal combat efficiency (less of a target), but that was back when Frost and I still worked on that stuff. I used to deal with that type of stuff all the time before I got into ponies and writing my story. Frost and I had a whole game concept designed with a backstory, factions, technology, everything. It turned out like a more realistic Warhammer 40K which I thought was pretty cool. We may take the concept to one of the other tabletop companies like Privateer Press.stringtheory wrote:
