Yeah, it's clearly not an E=mc^2 total matter-to-energy reaction. From the qualitative descriptions, 101 kg of reaction mass releases somewhere between 10 kt and 1 Mt of energy. For comparison, if you captured all the energy released by 1 kg of matter reacting with 1 kg of antimatter, it would be a 43 Mt bomb! (In reality, up to half the energy escapes as neutrinos, so cut that down to a more realistic 20-or-so megatons, assuming you were able to convert all the usable energy into heat.)hawkeye92 wrote:What really got me thinking was Goldenblood's conversation with Trottenheimer. Since Starmetal and moonstone self anhialate each other, to conserve physics it would release the energy of twenty thousand tons of matter. Which equates to 1.8e24J. Or enough power to rival the US's energy output for about a hundred thousand years. Or over seven and a half million times bigger than the biggest nuclear weapon ever detonated. In fact, it's 1800 times more energy than the La Rita supervolcanic eruption.

So, Blackjack was pretty much confirmed as Twilight's descendant last chapter. What I only realized JUST NOW was that this meant she's BIG MAC's descendant too.
So, as Big Mac's descendant and the product of his betrayal, it falls to her to deal with the remnants of his Marauders. Whether to gather them or lay them to rest...

- Spoiler:
Big Mac -The beastly titan stomps the lands again. Of course, she exercises a feminine touch...
Doof -Once hate veiled in flesh, now repentance clad in steel.
Stonewing -Body of stone but a heart of gold, now resting in peace... and pieces.
Echo -He who once listened as a shadow now whispers from the darkness.
Twist -Ever a warden against a violent rampage.
Psalm -A lost soul meditates within the atoner.
Vanity -Regrettably betrayed, but his duty and sacrifice live still.
Jetstream -Yet to be found.
Applesnack -Yet to be found.

- well, we all know what happened to Applesnack, but will Blackjack ever find out? FO:E covers his story pretty well, so unless Somber has a bone to pick with it, I don't think we'll be seeing a full length version of it (plus it's also late in the story now to start it), maybe just some highlights, parts that are not part of FO:E, or maybe Somber will do a off-camera infodump for Blackjack about him, probably from Lilpip, probably in the aftermath of all this

No, Twilight is going into Boo, so then Blackjack's adoptive pet/daughter will now be her ancestor! /wmg
@Jetstream
Best bet is some remnant, probably legate, has some kind of info on her.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
I've little to say right now since I just finished after pausing last night before certain big reveals. I like to torture myself to make new material last longer. ;)
Gotta say I really really liked the pacing in this chapter. LOTS of new yummy plot (shut up) handled very well and no scenes that go on for too long.
I guess I can shut up about certain inaccuracies of fan art now, too. :p
I'm also glad I don't understand any of these anime references some are talking about because I don't wanna be spoiled if certain story elements are being lifted heavily.
Anxiously awaiting impending awesome mistermech dump of purty peektures. I'd love to see an interpretation of our heroine's initial "dive" towards the end. That sounded real tranquil before everything else showed up, of course. Damn the vagueness, too lazy to put stuff in spoiler tags.
E: and don't take this as shallow tumblrese social justicey crap, but the Neighponese pony is...yellow? I understand the intent but some might not be too happy about that exact description...
I could very well see this being a huge moment and moral dilemma. Blackjack possibly forced to take the life of a true innocent and, more so, the purest and most unique (considering Boo was more advanced and learned than the other blanks) living form of her race to commit possibly the most selfish act she could do - denying the right of another being to live so she can. That'd be some defining character elements right there.

Last chapter was a GITS reference and this chapter a evangelion reference. Eh, I'm probably going to do some art myself. It's been ages since I've drawn and I keep trying to ask somber what he would want, but he's like if waldo and carmen sandiego have a offspring.
Well that was only one pony, not all the ponies would be yellow.
I don't think Boo will be a replacement body. Blackjack would probably let herself die before it came to that.

Hey. It's been a while since I've visit this thread. Chapter was awesome. No, really. We need art with Deus-tank. Also, maybe, scene where TS looks at BJ and what happens next. Also.

Huh, interesting thought. Though at this point we can guarantee that Applesnack will be Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film. He's currently either disabled in Glyphmark, waiting for Pip to get well enough to reboot his armor, or up and about while Pip recovers enough to achieve Peace In Our Time... so to speak.Luminous Lead wrote:So, Blackjack was pretty much confirmed as Twilight's descendant last chapter. By the way, I want to remind everyone that the chatter about Operation Cauterize is because of the systemwide alert Pip set off in the MAw Hub. The purpose of Cauterize was to kill all Dashites due to the perceived threat of one getting into the SPP, not a response to Maripony blowing up. The destruction of a small fleet probably silenced all of Autumn's opposition, though.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
- Thoughts on Latest Chapter:
- Somewhat late and abbreviated due to classes starting back up, sorry. But anyway, allons-y!
Overall thoughts: a very decent chapter. There wasn't anything huge that stuck out to me as a supremely awesome holy-crap-how-did-you-even-THINK-of-this? moment, but neither was there anything that stood out as poor. And honestly, that's fine; this isn't a "hook" chapter, and after that last one I'm pretty sure everyone's damn excited about where Blackjack and Co. will head next. This one set up stuff, provided a bit of a pressure release after the high octane previous chapter, and actually gave a bunch of answers (most, though certainly not all, of which had been speculated about, in some cases for quite a long time).
Likes:
-Echo finally being revealed as the Dealer. We've more or less known that for a while now, but I really liked how it was handled (Scotch Tape recognizing him while equipped with BJ's PipBuck - also, the fact that Echo decided to take the guise of his RP character, and how said character changed as the Dealer watched Blackjack deserves a re-look next time I read PH... ALSO ALSO, I thought it was brilliant how you had Blackjack ask the Dealer to talk more about his character to cheer him up; on my campus, the phrase "let me tell you about my character" is practically a meme, and I thought it was a deft and realistic touch to humanize the Dealer, who has generally seemed pretty ethereal in his ways. Cognizant of what's going around, and still with a stake in reality, but he often was more like a presence than a pony. So this was cool.)
-Boo. Boo is adorable. And when Boo is sad, the audience gets feels.
-Glory kicking flank and taking names. Hell yeah. It's been a while since Glory had time to shine in her best profession, and the beginning of the chapter was both a great start and a fantastic way to show that Glory is a very strong pony (while also showing her avoiding her understandable horror, fear, and grief by throwing herself into her work, not unlike how Blackjack has been known to deal with her own problems).
-The gypsy curse. TBH it came a little bit out of left field for me (I may have just missed the clues), but it did explain a lot and was handled well. And I do think that this was ultimately something that needed an explanation (the whole "specialist unit" thing), so that's good.
-The Psalm dream. It was brutal, and I'm very, very excited to see what happens next with that.
One thing I sort of missed in this chapter compared to other "recovery" chapters was the opportunity for characters to just talk and interact with one another in a relatively relaxed setting. There was some, certainly - Glory and Blackjack most obviously - but less compared to some. This does make sense; at this point, they all know each other well enough that there's perhaps not a lot more room for building character and relationships, and there were other things to be done with this chapter. All the same, I must admit that, on first read, I did miss the down time. The memory orbs, mind-delvings, and dream were interesting, and answered plenty of longstanding questions while leaving plenty around, but I did wish once or twice that there had been less of them and more of the quiet, slow stuff. That said, I also totally get that there are a lot of things that need to be shown still with the story as it approaches endgame (I think it's starting to get there, anyway! But who knows?), and that, as much as I like the slow stuff, there are also people who think that the story sometimes doesn't progress quickly enough. And this did not hurt my enjoyment of the chapter.
So, yes! As always, looking forward to where you take the story next, Somber! Well done with the chapter, glad you're feeling recovered, I hope you like that FOE book and whatnot, and thanks for continuing to find time to write this awesome story. :)

While I was making breakfast today I realized something. With Blackjack's new enhancements, the plate on her chest and the ridges along her spine / head, she can't wear regular armor anymore. At this point I think she has a passive DT of 12 or so. I really did like the hoofington football / reaper armor, but at this point she'll need something custom made which only a few groups can do. Do you guys think she'll just run without armor to put the new augments through their paces?

If I remember correctly, those two were a matching flavour of helpful bitter. I hope to see more interactions between the doctors that have patched BJ over the weeks...
I believe Blackjack ran and hopped more than people think. I keep remembering Hippocratic, where thumbs saved her butt from time to time. But she was alone then... she does seem much more mobile when there is nobody else that could make a potential target.
Gestalt and Mosaic. Minor side-notes, yes, but I'm interested in those two. Honestly... I expected them to be much less invested. Trixie is aggressively in support of Unity, Twilight is firmly against these extreme measures... I expected the twins to be completely neutral. A simultaneous, "Eh, whatever," and only going along with Trixie because she's louder than Twilight. They are, after all, already used to following a Ministry Mare's often unreasonable demands. But both of them seemed more enthusiastic than I expected about following Trixie's commands. Not at all tired or overpliant.

You mean like weaponizing the shield bubble like in RvB?
Or doing the expanding shield thing Sue Storm could do in some continuities?

Never watched RvB, and I don't know who's that "Sue Storm" you're referring.
What I mean is using the fact that from what we know magical shields act like hard "walls", to create a "wall" in the form of a blade, which you could use as one and summon at will.
Or summon it inside somepony, tearing him/her from the insides in the process.
Summon a shield wall in the middle of someone : cut him in half.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
That certainly is a possibility, but I don't think Blackjack would do that. It is very pragmatic and using a spell in an unorthodox way, like Blackjack using TK to hit the magazine release on people's guns, but I think that method is too violent for her tastes. She worries about becoming a monster and after she butchered those enclave soldiers at Yellow River she knows exactly what she's capable of if shes in the right mood. Using extremely violent, but practical, methods would bring her closer to the edge. I don't think she'll use the shield spell, if she gets one, in that way, but I'd count on her enemies trying.

Yeah, she probably won't use it, or at least not until she either snap or is forced by circumstances to improvise such a weapon.
Thinking about it, if you can summon it as a blade, it could be useful to cut ropes if you ever find yourself tied up ; or something similar.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Depend on how long there remain for the story to be finished.
The Collegiate has unlocked Cyberpony, and even if the Doc said they would need years to be able to make augments from scratch, if they got the necessary spare parts, then maybe in a few weeks/month they could have the first few prototypes of Cyberpony augmented parts.
Once the news get to them of BJ's recent upgrade,

Hmm, wait I assumed they replaced the flesh with the armor and reinforced/replaced existing subdermal armor. So, does the new stuff go over her hide, under or in place of it? I know it said she had a small chest plating thing but I assume for the most part other than that, the legs and the spine ridges, most of her torso is still fleshy and in proportion, just heavier.
If she ever does get wings, I except a scene of her refusing to fly ever and being afraid followed by repeatedly crashing into a wall over and over again.
