Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
how do you all feel about crossovers (not fusion crossovers like FoE, but "transplanted character" crossovers, wherein a character or characters of one franchise end up in anohter)?
because I just had a little idea wherein Twilight and Rainbow get accidentally transported to the world of Hellsing Ultimate (specifically, the TFS Abridged version of Hellsing Ultimate)

Putting the XCOM team aside for a bit, since College and stuff keeps getting in the way. But might be planning to play FTL. Anyone want to be in the crew? And what would you specialize in?

personally I'm not a huge fan of the genre, much preferring fusion crossovers, also not knowing any of the crossed over universes doesn't help, so the only one's which I read are 40k ones,Mister Frost wrote:how do you all feel about crossovers (not fusion crossovers like FoE, but "transplanted character" crossovers, wherein a character or characters of one franchise end up in anohter)?

but a reverse one...usually someone from the non-mlp universe comes to Equestria, so that's kinda original
as for general fandom reaction to them, generally there's at least one "Master Chief goes to Equestria" stories in the FiMfiction feature box at any one time, so those of us who consider ourselves fan-fiction connoisseurs consider them to be on the same level as all the shipping (usually clop) stories that always seem to reach the feature box, appealing to the lowest common denominator, thereby lacking in much literary merit, but the masses always seem to lap them up

I think it's a bit overdone wherein a different character goes to Equestria, and woefully underdone wherein an Equestrian goes to a different world. To be honest, I'm not sure how most bronies would react to any interaction between Abridged Alucard and ponies. Ponies are peaceful, simple folk and Alucard is...... Alucard. If you've seen the videos, that's enough to frighten you deeply. The first can be viewed here:
And the others will likely be in the reccommended videos of that one. Be ye forewarned: extreme gore, swearing, and, in the sequels, mass murder and graphic discriptions of one character's plan to brutally rape, murder, and then rape again another character follow. All of it played for laughs.

Shipping, Halo, HMiE (human military in Equestria), anything by Blueshift, SS&E, etc. no matter what... and spaceships, apparently.
FiMFic seems to dig that stuff.

I never said that he wasn't, it's just that authors like him don't really have to try anymore--their skill is always noticed, without fail, by hundreds. But that's not to say that they don't, though, they deserve it. I mean, Blueshift's XCOM crossover, which looks pants-on-head stupid, to me at least, (though, to be fair, I'm not one for comedy) got featured instantly.

I've not really seen many HMiE that you mentioned. Well, I've not seen them done well. You always seem to end up with some bitter, traumatised soldier who thinks that War is Helltm and that ponies are special and perfect and never ever fight. This despite that just about all Western militaries (it's always a Western soldier) are all-volunteer, highly-trained and supplied with therapists and councilling to avoid PTSD and such conditions, and that in-show we frequently see ponies fighting and engaging in cruel and often violent acts, even in a "peaceful" town like Ponyville or a "national jewel" like Canterlot.

well, that's complaining that they're popular, so they're terrible, well at least FiMfiction stops putting an author's work in the featured box once they're over 1,000 watchers, to make it kinda more fair...IncoherentOrange wrote:I never said that he wasn't, it's just that authors like him don't really have to try anymore--their skill is always noticed, without fail, by hundreds. Hell no, that's not what I mean at all. They're very much meritable authors, a far sight better at what they do than I am. I should've worded it differently. By 'I mean' I should have put, 'For example'.

Human anything in Equestria sounds terrible to me. Same with crossovers like you're all talking about. Themes are what's important, not just characters.

It's interesting to contrast human cultures, which vary from decadent (high society) to ruthlessly pragmatic (military) to everywhere in between, with Equestrian culture, which appearsto be much simpler and "closer to Earth", though many authors forget the established, elitist nobility, absolute autocratic government, and frequent monster attacks.
a similar effect is found in crossovers, as it can be fun to see how our favorite characters from different franchises interact. It's more for comedy/badass points rather than a dramatic or heavy theme. more light-hearted fare, really. Most fanfic tends to be, though there are exceptions.

yeah, if you can summarize a story/world without mentioning any of the characters in it, then it's in a whole different league by my standardsCaoimhe wrote:Themes are what's important, not just characters.
the stories I can do this for are A Song of Ice and Fire, 40k, fallout, FO:E (by extension), maybe MLP, and possibly a few fan-fics

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
That's how I coaxed my brother into reading FoE, actually.
I believe my scope was too large, though. I can see short one off fics regarding crossover characters but any large amount of effort spent developing such a thing seems like a waste of talent.
FiM alone has so many options for fics. I for one wanna see more stuff along the lines of "Applebloom and Scootaloo See an R Rated Movie" or whatever it was called. That fic was fantastic and used the characters well. It could very well have been a show episode! Ending reveal was kinda rolleyes and unnecessary though.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
'Humans in Equestria' usually implies a set of themes, which often vary but also often overlap, with few outliers, so you can often generalize the type by saying just that.
Most of them suck eggs, and their tendency to be nearly the same as one another is a major reason for that.

I've thought of a few many ways to introduce FO:E to my elder sister, but I've never worked up the courage to bring it up.

Dude, she's never, ever played or expressed interest in playing Fallout.
Speaking of, I've thought up many responses to my parents learning that I write fanfiction, or bringing it up on my own. I've never used any of it.

With me, this is how it went:
Mum: So, you like ponies?
Me: Yup.
Mum: -looks at pony items around my room- (she was visiting) Huh. Okay.
Me: Yup.
My dad:
Dad: So uh... this... thing...
Me: The ponies?
Dad: Yeah...
Me: I enjoy them. Something nice and happy to enjoy. Better that than drugs, right?
Dad: ...I suppose. Okay.
When they learned about me doing the fanfiction, they were all for it and occasionally ask how I've been doing, if I have any plans to publish and if I have plans to go do it proper as something that can earn money rather than for fun.

My fic, at one point, involves a child getting raped by a ghoul before dying - and then having another seven children dying too.
Pretty much all the people I speak to at work know of this because someone skimmed through my stuff or something and saw it.
The reaction is always "YOU PUT PONY CHILD RAPE BY ZOMBIES INTO YOUR FIC!"
I just shrug.
