Re: Fallout Equestria: Murky Number Seven
Not sure if Mech or Fuzzy wants to post it here themselves so I'm not going to, but Mech just posted cover art for Book 2.
I'll say the same thing here as I did on dA, there are no words because it would only detract.

right, just one more week to go and this waiting is killing me... these set dates just make it all the more hard to wait for new chapters to come out, lucky us they are practically novels. Like when i was a kid I would collect the animorphs books...

Well, I like to think that having defined dates helps people set an expectation rather than constant unknowing of where it is. :p

Right, new chapter's up (I haven't been F5ing the hub page all day, honest... Well, maybe a bit)
Anyway, the Great Game. Going to put the soundtrack of the Undiscovered Country on for this- seems just the stuff for dark politics.
Review coming soon (tm)

Re: Fallout Equestria: Murky Number Seven
Another good chapter, Fuzzy.
- Spoiler:
- "It almost seemed more important than working in the Mall, but it was easy to see there was no true value here. Protégé had been reduced to merely a supervisor of keeping things running than any real position of power."
Hahahaha! Oh yes, just merely a supervisor of keeping things running. It's not saluted-on-the-reviewing-stand power, sure, and certainly has its limits… but let's see how your political opponents fare when their supply shipments keep somehow being misplaced… or even not recorded as having been ordered in the first place.
POSSIBLE (PROBABLE?) ERROR:
"That strange device they had used to block his eyepiece's E.F.S still lay whirring in the corner."
When and why did Protege put the device back? And what does the "still" here mean?

Yeah I read this in the car after work, amazing, I enjoyed it so much. Ragini is so much more than a side character, she's not a background character not anymore really. I envision Protege being voiced by Christopher Ayres,

Well it is in reference to a griffin, so that's more of a grey area, it's either talons or hands in my mindswicked wrote:Dear Fuzzy,

Been busy the past few days, but I did get some time to read on Sunday and finished it up.
Something that I may have missed an important line and I know had to be done in order for Murky to not be in the room at the time, but how comes Murky and Ragini wasn't allowed to stay but Wormtail was?

I just deleted the mention of the device still being there. They took it with them.

Bias. Their "party" if you will had enough sway to overrule anyone saying that back, it was an attempt to make him either have to be reduced to counter claim or to just accept it. He could lose support or lose pride. In such a situation, he chose to keep his head high.

Alright, works for me.
I wouldn't mind if something happened to Wormtail again. Like say.... a freak nail to the tongue accident.

Ugh, Swicked! Your Murgini (name provisional) is sapping my loyalty to Murkege, and I'm having trouble disliking it!swicked wrote:

Chapter 19.
- MNS19R:
<3Before me I had drawn Unity reaching out toward me off the page, her hoof outstretched to try and grab mine. Biting my lip, I lightly touched my own hoof to the drawing.
“Thank you...”<3<3<3Even just seeing them made me feel as safe as I was with...
...with him here watching over me....but, I guess, the unicorns among them just weren’t on-hand when he needed a fourth?I knew we could trust his staff, all of them were fiercely loyal to Weathervane above anypony else.
Also: convenient! I know Weathervane would probably know how to root out a snake in the grass, but that wouldn’t generally mean one couldn’t be forced upon him if he had become known as a slave sympathizer.
So, the megaspell mostly-cured his wings, but left his lungs alone? Alright, then....I’ll need to do some research but in either FoE or PH wings are stated to be really, really strong, which makes them very difficult to damage or cripple. Obviously, if it was in PH then who cares... but if it was in FoE then it could be an issue, I think...Very fragile things, pegasus wings...capable of the most furious of movements and immense wind stresses yet so very light and easy to harm.If you gave Murky five minutes I can almost guarantee the kid could find a decent place to hide. He could stuff himself in a desk drawer if he wanted to, really. I don’t see any inspectors finding him if they’re only there to look at slaves. You don't want to be here when they arrive and I don't want to risk Murky in the radiation below to hide in the basement.Famous last wor... actually, I guess that doesn’t really work, here. Ominous, though.“I'm glad you finally see that, Murky. They're a part of you and I can't imagine you without them.”
I can’t shake the feeling these wings, as non-functional as they are, are just something to be taken away from him in the worst way possible. I don’t want to denigrate ya, Fuzzy, as someone who would write something like this in just for a future... whatever the trope is called. Kick the dog, but much stronger...
Anyway, yeah, but I still feel like he’s just exposing a vulnerability, here.
...additionally, given the advantages he has as a well-hated slave everyone thinks is dead, I would have expected them to dye his coat and try and keep him incognito.
They could even just rub coal into his coat, making him black. If you did the same to the wrap around his wings he could pass for an anonymous earth pony at reasonable distance, easily.
...and then, when it inevitably rains, we could have a 101 Dalmatians “We’ll all be Labradors!” moment!I’m gonna guess “Pinkie” heard it was somepony’s birthday today...The balloons warped and disappeared, being replaced by what looked like an arrow. That reminds me, I don’t think Chainlink’s ever called on a griffin before. I mean, their contracts are directly through Red Eye. I wonder what merit this has.One who can get a griffin to spot you from the air.Wormtail’s a very weird moron. Murky is outside of the ring of slavers, here. Wormtail’s already claimed Brim and Glim have no authority since he has a bunch of guns on his side and Brim’s never been able to stand up against guns with just his hooves if you don’t count all the times he has.“Of course you will, my dear. But you see I have twelve heavily armed allies at least twenty feet away with their tongues on the triggers and you have a half dead raider with no weapons. Hand him over, I'll maybe see that you at least find a home, my dear.”
You know, his first “break out” during the riot toward the start of the fic, his escape from the stable, his breaking back into Filly. He’s never done those things, Wormtail’s pretty sure. He’s especially never beaten the crap out of a bunch of slavers and then nearly caved his master’s head in, all without any weaponry. It just sounds silly.
Besides, Wormtail’s can’t be beat as long as he trust his master. His master told him so. Master can do that, you know. Master has powers nopony else has. Powers not even the fake-y fake goddesses had, so everything will be fine. Great, even. Amazing! Not like those times that didn’t happen. Never like those, no sir. What times were those? Exactly!
Anyway, Wormtail’s still telling them to hand Murky over, which... doesn’t make sense. He could just take Murky, they’re in no position to stop him. Literally, they are not in the way.Glimmer&Murky: MY HERO! *swoon*Behind us, atop a set of gantry stairs from a far entrance, we saw him. His revolver floated just near a blinking red eyepiece to aim down its scope, his red mane blowing in the light breeze around his head. Just as he had done in my dream, he had protected us from the harsher brutality of slavery.
Brimstone: ...uh, yeah. Yay... red eyepiece guy.Wormtail: “Which didn’t even happen because Master is only resting because he works very hard and deserves a vacation and he hit his head on that fountain 26 times on purpose anyway just to show how awesome he is and Brimstone was just helping him so that he wouldn’t strain his neck but Brimstone should die anyway because he’s ugly and Master doesn’t like looking at him and-“ *collapse*“Only until Chainlink is healthy again since that brute got near him!
Slaver: “Ugh, the slimy little sycophant forgot to breathe between praises, again.”
...if I could make one quick not-serious complaint (really), it always feels like your fic should have more crazy people. Yes, you have Wildcard, and pretty much everyone is some level of sadistic monster, but there are so many colors of illogical madness you could be tapping into here that you just don’t in favor of serious business :P
Somber has a lot of pretty little crazies and I’ve grown to love their rainbow madness <3
...but your way is good too, this is more of a preference :PWormtail: Hah! Shows what you know, Master I’m brainless idiot, anyway, so you wouldn’t even hit anything!“There's a helpfulness to having a sworn griffin bodyguard who's a handy sharpshooter too, you know? You give one order, she'll pull the trigger. Murk here can attest to her accuracy on the move, never mind your big head standing still.”I could have sworn this was what Wormtail was, too.Just a slave playing at slaver!
“his clothes loosely fitted from a significantly loss in weight” significantWhat the buck is there to be perplexed about? Murky was sent to the pit, then killed there.Even Master Red Eye was rather perplexed by it.Would that be Chainlink’s office? I would think protégé’s personal one would be entirely destroyed.“I'm glad to see that the ghoul doctor's treatments are helping, Murk. Please, would you do me a favour and attend my office upon your return?”
...I have to admit, I love Ragini. I can’t love her for who she is, as I don’t know her, but I love her for what she is; a fierce, loyal protector no matter her opinions of the practices of this empire. Plus, now she’s flightless.
I know I’ve played it off as a joke before, but given Murky’s consistent interest starting something with a female yet utter inability to not only find one that’s unattached but even so much as find one near his own age, I KINDA hope Ragini turns out to be that young. Protégé would likely be assigned a fairly amateur griffin given his political and would likely pick one that was young if given the chance so his protector wouldn’t be as jaded to the horrors of Filly. He’d want someone who could be an idealist, whether or not the one he got happened to be.
I’ve never supported shipping in any fic before, but given how opposite Murky and Ragini while sharing (or having shared) this hammer-to-wing pain, let alone the fact that she exists in a position that could put him in her guardianship, I think it would be interesting if a ship were approached slowly and with tact. Much like it already is, with her belittling him at every turn.
I like guardian characters. Brimstone is nice, in his way, but he’s still a bad person. He's not only done terrible things, but he deep down wants to continue to do them. He will not shy from them and feels no deep shame from them. It isn’t in his nature to protect, only to destroy his enemies. Ragini’s purpose in life is actually one of protection, so... yeah. I also have to wonder if we’ll ever see her contract, as what she stipulate she is and isn’t willing to do would be very telling of her character as a person.
...and I'm not saying Ragini's a great person or anything, but when she shut down Murky's escape without killing him it was equal parts her ability to and just plain deciding not to kill when she didn't need to. I doubt anyone would have given her flack for killing one fleeing slave, especially one that had caused such a stir. She has regular opportunities to be brutal on the level of a slaver. Heck, Stern shoots anyone on sight that she thinks is disrespecting Red Eye in FoE, so talon company could easily be colored by her brutality. I could easily just be imagining things, but for all her talk of wicked revenge and being verbally mean to Murky she just doesn't seem... evil, I guess. And she's certainly not going to abandon her post just because there might be raiders out there that all but ruined her life as a griffin. She still has her pride. It's just admirable.
Probably a pipe dream and nothing near what you are planning, Fuzzy, but it would be interesting to me if some form of bond were to grow there. I think you plan on some degree of connection, what with her facing a hammer as opposed to having some other torture given, or even just having the wings cut, bitten or blown off (as, I think, those would be a touch more raider-y)... but I don’t know the nature of your intended connection, especially with Murky’s wings being “healed” now.
...additionally, if Murky’s efforts were to ever turn to, and succeed at, getting her capable of flight again... she’d probably love him forever XDMurky: I meant I know what it feels like to have them smashed with a hammer.“No you don't, flightless! Don't you dare tell me you know how it feels to lose your wings! You've never tasted the air above the clouds, never felt the rush through your body in a straight dive or the satisfying ache the day after a challenging flight! Those feathers of yours do not know what it is to be a flyer! So don't you come here with your magically healed little shaking wings by your side and have the nerve to say you know how I feel!”
Ragini: ........oh.
...because I seriously doubt Murky was going to say he knew what it felt like to have his ability to fly taken away as his knowledge of what it’s like to be flightless is on the same level as any earth pony’s. He didn’t even want to be a pegasus for most of his life; he would just remember the pain of their destruction and all the persecution he faced. He wanted them cut off at one point, something Ragini could never comprehend. I more than kinda wish you had let Murky say that line, Fuzzy... Ragini’s outburst was entirely uncalled-for.
...in fact, just to mix it up a little, I’m gonna hold out hope he gets to clarify that that is what he intended to say... maybe on his way out of the office.Have ponies ever had indentured servants?Protégé looked up quickly. “An assistant.”
“A slave is a slave!”
The distinction is minor, but if Murky entered into the contract willingly, Protégé paid him on top of sheltering and feeding him (so that Murky could buy from the slave markets if he so desired), it would definitely not be slavery. It wouldn’t be the best solution, and Murky might not be in a position to break the contract on a whim, but it would be something that isn’t slavery... particularly if Protégé tried to go through the legwork of shortening Murky’s sentence.
...which he would never, ever do, since he believes deeply in Red Eye’s practices and would never intentionally subvert them without a very, very good reason. Still, whatever.
If Murky literally just doesn’t want to do anything for anyone else anymore... well, he’ll eventually learn how the world works. He can’t really be expected to know now, after all.Stop right now and look at Protégé’s cutie mark.“You could come with us...”
Don’t ask him to leave Red Eye. Believing in the jerk is part of Protégé’s very soul.
...nope, Murky doesn’t correct Ragini. Sigh...Heh, Murky’s enough of a teetotaler that Glimmerlight BREATHING on him after a strong drink could knock him out.“Liquid fun, Murky. Liquid fun. Besides, we've got something to celebrate...”Oh, wow, real alcohol? I was expecting that... prison stuff. Totally blanking on the name.groucho or stinko or something. Something-o.“Aye, can't deny it'll be welcome. Even if it is that water they call ale.”
Edit from the future: Pruno.
By the by? Murky’s friends haven’t had to correct his trotting stance so much as once so far. Good sign, that is.Can I take a personal moment? What, I can take anything I please, since this is my review? Awesome! You see them lying in a cot so vulnerable and you promise to yourself that you'll take care of them forever.
I’m a parent, as I don’t think you knew. Not even one year old yet. Looking at him, though... I really just feel powerless.
I can’t stop the world. I can’t protect him. I can’t protect my spouse or my family or anyone. All I can do is try, and that’s what I am doing.
I honestly wonder if looking at a child is supposed to make the child’s parent feel like you are saying. Make promises like that, and feel at all comfortable with them.
I don’t know if I can even protect him from himself. My greatest aspiration for him, put as simply as possible, is “I hope he’ll be good.”
I’ve said it multiple times to him, my spouse, my parents... just people. I hope he’ll be good, because I’ll be sad if he’s not.
You know what? Murky is barely even noticing ponies looking at him in anger and hatred, anymore! Which means he either doesn’t care (because he feels safe), and/or they really didn’t look at him in hatred that much before (and Murky just had a persecution complex, making him imagine a lot of it). I’m hoping both are true. That reminds me, when is he going to answer the call of pink-thulu?“Welcome, Murky!” Glimmerlight trotted up quickly and pulled me toward it. “I told you that you could choose today as your official birthday from now on...every birthday needs a party!”
Rather annoying that Wormtail had to interrupt that.I know this has nothing to do with me, but you might remember this is exactly the type of thing I’ve wanted Murky to say/realize for a while now... that Coral is fantastic. So this made me happy. If I hadn't already done so, I'd have let my respect for her become boundless....and how is Brimstone supposed to bring back drinks? His hooves are too big. He’d have to carry them in his mouth... and if he used a tray, the guy’s limping REALLY badly and with one eye gone his depth perception is gone so he’ll be stumbling over anything, so they’d just spill.“Aye, you get started on them and I'll fetch the drinks.” Brimstone pulled himself up and stomped off with a thin smile to the bar. I couldn't help but notice him removing the hat the moment he left.
Here’s hoping he just comes back with a barrel of ale.
Hah, I’m putting fifty bits down on Glimmer having gotten him a playbuck magazine for, heh, “reference purposes”.
...oh, and his pipbuck, of course, since she’s gotta give that back to him at some point....or maybe he won’t. Sigh...Brimstone returned, carrying a tray of drinks and mugs filled with very strong smelling liquid.
...aww, the specialness... and the entire lack of perversion. I guess Glimmer decided not to make Murky embarrassed on his big day? Additionally, what was Blunderbuck thinking, betting Murky wouldn’t cry? Who would take that bet? Ever?Oh, that’s nasty...Right now it was just me and this candle and one little wish in my mind. My hoof rested upon that little statuette as I took a short breath and blew the candle out.
...”first-time stories”...
You gotta be kidding me. I’m not objecting to the idea that they’d do this, but this is the type of thing I’d leave the room for if this was a movie. Drawn-out plays to embarrass a character are just too cringe-worthy.
...kay, past the night, past the hangover, on the way to the library.
Quick question, though... are we ever gonna see Glim use memory magic offensively? Because I’d love to see her reformat Wildcard’s brain. Absolutely wipe/corrupt in one overpowered blast that even takes his capacity for speech away, maybe even his ability to use telekinesis. It’d be a fitting end for a crazy person to get a hard restart to the brain.Pinkie! That laughter came again, a sort of giggle followed by a snort.
A secret MoM base under a library? Not a bakery? Odd.
Heh, yet another robot that likes Murky, she just doesn’t know how to show non-lethal affection.FYI? Not following at all. It’s nice to have Pinkie, though. I hope Murky decides to like her more after this... after all, she really did try really, really hard to save everypony.I couldn't deny it made some sense though. I had certainly seen these clues, just I hadn't figured they were all related. Magister Heartcare. Fluttershy mentioning missing refugees. Sundial...No idea. Best guess would be a balefire bomb to sneak into the city like in Manehattan, but that doesn’t match up with any of the clues, so *shrug*You were already on the right track, this'll just point you in the proper direction and make you the one to find whatever got left behind by the zebras and take care of it before anypony bad gets it too! It'll take you to the way out, ending all this forever...”
...hmm, I guess I always assumed Spike might have been the one noticing Murky from time to time, but it was always future Pinkie.
...unless Spike is helping her out as a favor :P
“Of you go, Murky!” <-- Off you go.
Hmm... all very nice exposition, but the smile song? Let’s just say I’m not the type to enjoy that sort of thing...
At least, not right now. This, though... when Murky indulges in simple acts of faith and trust, I like those.Somehow, despite the terrifying thought of some benevolent force watching me across history, I felt strangely reassured whenever I saw those eyes watching me now.
... nice way to end the chapter, Murky learning some basic equestrian. Putting it down as a perk, though, seems kinda awkward, but eh... who cares?
Eh, a happy little chapter for a happy little pony.
Far from my favorite... there was nothing for me to really sink my teeth into.
No struggle, anguish, pain, tragedy, desperation... or even hope, really. Aftermath and buildup from the last chapter.
Give me my weeping and gnashing of teeth :D
Because the truest natures of a character are revealed through struggle, outward or inward, and without that... we have Brim in a birthday hat.
...so, thanks for the chapter, see you at the end of the next...
...Ragmurkege? :)

Re: Fallout Equestria: Murky Number Seven
Am I being severely derpy and missing a Chapter 18 one or did I not get your thoughts on that one? I admit I was very curious to see what you thought given its abstract concepts. :p
Sort of handwaved although admittedly it's a corner I noticed I'd wrote it into only afterwards. The handwave is generally that it had something to do with friendship = magic and needing unicorns with enough power of friendship to draw enough magic to save him. Was supposed to show again that Weathervane has a much deeper care for Murky that he really lets on. He is a very paternal character, really.
Although as I said. I fully admit that's a handwave.
Explained in chapter 5. It doesn't affect taint. The Fluttershy healing spell it was based on (the one that healed widespread armies) was developed before taint was a thing, so it wouldn't have anything built into it to affect taint. Murky specifically asks about that in Chapter 5 for precisely this reason.
PH was the one that has them being crazily resistant to damage. FOE stated them as being incredibly strong in motion which actually isn't too unlike some birds in real life that batter small prey with their wings. To my eye, they are very strong at their job (griffin wingblades etc) but they are still hollow bones fragile things to direct harm as physiology would hold true.
Good. :p
Yup. That's a very specific design decision. Griffins answer to the leader. The leader has the contract. The contract is with Red Eye. Add in Stern's fanatical following of Red Eye anyway even without the contract and I see the griffins as almost universally loyal and not the kind of slavers that Shackles would have much influence over.
You sort of explained it yourself there. Wormtail knows what Brimstone is capable of here and he doesn't want to take a step closer toward him. By insisting Murky come to him, he's trying not to give Brimstone even an inch to have a greater advantage to try anything. As the scene says, Wormtail's a coward. He's relying on bluff and trying to look big and tough to be in control of a situation using those around him as his shield with their weapons.
And unfortunately, as much as Brim has a good capability to punch above his weight even without weaponry, even he can't do much against assault rifles in a firing line concave. Every other time he's found ways to get around it, to stop them hitting him, to use something to shield and close the distance or just maintain surprise and momentum. Here they literally have him like a firing squad.
I like to think Wormtail sees Shackles like North Koreans see Kim Jong Un.
Oh I dunno, I've got Wicked Slit, Mister Peace, Wildcard, Barb to some extent, Mosin and Blunderbuck...okay maybe not rampant insanity but I like to think I have some quirky characters in there. :p
Well spotted.
Generally Red Eye would see at least a list of those being sent who weren't volunteers, I'd imagine. Given the only other group is those being punished for working against him or being alleged to have been. Red Eye knows Murky and doesn't see him as a pony he wants dead in the Pit, so him being perplexed is more a case of "Why was he there?"
Part of Ragini's character really. As you'll see next chapter she is very much one for seeing the simpler side of things and reacting without allowing any clarification or reason to cloud it. She looks on things at face value alone which can explain her sometimes condradictary behaviour (again next chapter). But I think you'll find some elements to enjoy of 20 then, if you like what she has here. I did want to give her a little more focus in the story after how popular she got much to my surprise.
They will certainly be watching, but the attitude was meant to be positive for this chapter so his head is held high. Future chapters...weeell, you know Glimmer has her eye on him for such things. Coral too.
Of course, there is always another theory I'm not going to outright say as to why Weathervane said that... ;)
This actually really interests me, given Coral's place in the story and that her primary arc is that of her son. Interesting viewpoint and I am now very interested to see how the future of that story relates for you. :)
Sorry to hear the party didn't do as much for you, but glad you found elements of it to like. This was definitely a happier chapter so perhaps your grimdark side wouldn't find much. ;)
Thanks for the feedback though, corrected the typos and taken thoughts in mind for elements. (Mostly the parent element to think on for Coral) Your reviews are always good fun to look through with the images and suchlike. :)
Also, ship clashes? Oh my! Whichever shall prove to be the one that becomes more popular?
...but, I guess, the unicorns among them just weren’t on-hand when he needed a fourth?

So, the megaspell mostly-cured his wings, but left his lungs alone? Alright, then.

...I’ll need to do some research but in either FoE or PH wings are
stated to be really, really strong, which makes them very difficult to
damage or cripple. Obviously, if it was in PH then who cares... but if
it was in FoE then it could be an issue, I think...
PH was the one that has them being crazily resistant to damage. FOE stated them as being incredibly strong in motion which actually isn't too unlike some birds in real life that batter small prey with their wings. I can’t shake the feeling these wings, as non-functional as they are,
are just something to be taken away from him in the worst way possible. I
don’t want to denigrate ya, Fuzzy, as someone who would write something
like this in just for a future... whatever the trope is called. Kick
the dog, but much stronger...
Anyway, yeah, but I still feel like he’s just exposing a vulnerability, here.
Good. :p
That reminds me, I don’t think Chainlink’s ever called on a griffin
before. I mean, their contracts are directly through Red Eye. I wonder
what merit this has.

Anyway, Wormtail’s still telling them to hand Murky over, which...
doesn’t make sense. He could just take Murky, they’re in no position to
stop him. Literally, they are not in the way.

Wormtail: “Which didn’t even happen because Master is only resting
because he works very hard and deserves a vacation and he hit his head
on that fountain 26 times on purpose anyway just to show how awesome he
is and Brimstone was just helping him so that he wouldn’t strain his
neck but Brimstone should die anyway because he’s ugly and Master
doesn’t like looking at him and-“ *collapse*
Slaver: “Ugh, the slimy little sycophant forgot to breathe between praises, again.”
I like to think Wormtail sees Shackles like North Koreans see Kim Jong Un.
...if I could make one quick not-serious complaint (really), it always
feels like your fic should have more crazy people. Yes, you have
Wildcard, and pretty much everyone is some level of sadistic monster,
but there are so many colors of illogical madness you could be tapping
into here that you just don’t in favor of serious business :P
Somber has a lot of pretty little crazies and I’ve grown to love their rainbow madness <3
...but your way is good too, this is more of a preference :P
Oh I dunno, I've got Wicked Slit, Mister Peace, Wildcard, Barb to some extent, Mosin and Blunderbuck...okay maybe not rampant insanity but I like to think I have some quirky characters in there. :p

What the buck is there to be perplexed about? Murky was sent to the pit, then killed there.
I more than kinda wish you had let Murky say that line, Fuzzy... Ragini’s outburst was entirely uncalled-for.
Part of Ragini's character really. As you'll see next chapter she is very much one for seeing the simpler side of things and reacting without allowing any clarification or reason to cloud it. Can I take a personal moment? What, I can take anything I please, since this is my review? Awesome!
I’m a parent, as I don’t think you knew. Not even one year old yet. Looking at him, though... I really just feel powerless.
I
can’t stop the world. I can’t protect him. I can’t protect my spouse or
my family or anyone. All I can do is try, and that’s what I am doing.
I
honestly wonder if looking at a child is supposed to make the child’s
parent feel like you are saying. Make promises like that, and feel at
all comfortable with them.
I don’t know if I can even protect him
from himself. My greatest aspiration for him, put as simply as possible,
is “I hope he’ll be good.”
I’ve said it multiple times to him, my spouse, my parents... just people. I hope he’ll be good, because I’ll be sad if he’s not.
This actually really interests me, given Coral's place in the story and that her primary arc is that of her son. Interesting viewpoint and I am now very interested to see how the future of that story relates for you. :)

Chapter 19.

Hey, I know this is a bit unasked for, but all you can do for a child is teach them wrong from right. Set an example for how important the right is. After this it's a matter of life and how they learn to come into their own identity. I don't think it is possible to protect anyone or anything from the world, but what you can do is prepare them for it. I will have to learn when my own time to raise a son or daughter comes into my life. Good is always a matter of perception, so what may be good to some is not to others. Same with right or wrong for that matter. I guess one should consider the lily it does not worry about tomorrow or yesterday, and everything will be okay.

Unrelated to anything but I was getting excited that Murky Number Seven was going to update in time for my birthday again.
Then I remembered the story isn't on an every other week schedule like it use to. It's all good, it'll just be a late birthday gift rather than an early one haha.

I scrolled down to hit "post reply" in another tab while reading it and then mousehweled back up.
And up.
And up.
That's some review size. :p
Thanks for the review. Highly entertaining! Always a looked forward to result on each chapter launch. May I ask though, did you ever offer any thoughts on Chapter 18 while catching up? A lot of the crazier imagery and abstract natures I was interested to hear your thoughts on.

- Spoiler:
- 1. What? “Was it any different”? Not “What is/was it like”? That’s weird. Really, really weird.
I was really expecting a “What was it like, being his assistant?”
I
just went through the chapters, and there had actually already been a
time in which the question was structured differently... back in Chapter
11 the questioner asked “How far would you go to be free?”
I’d
honestly been building on the idea that this was a machine of some sort.
Murky’s weird relationship with machines tied with the un-altering
nature of nearly all of the questions...
I dunno. It’s kinda weird.
I also wonder if anyone had headcanoned that he was talking to Protégé, here? I didn’t, but it seems like someone could have.
There's been many many theories. No-one knows the truth yet. Not even my editors.I feel like Murky’s right and is foreshadowing for ya, Fuzzy, but my
appraisal of Chainlink indicates that what Glimmer said is true.
See,
Chainlink is very direct. If he hates someone, he does what he can do
directly hurt them. He sent Glimmer, Brim and Coral off on tons of
shifts to isolate Murky, not to punish them for associating with him. He
doesn’t spread around the pain like that. He won’t, for example, be
punishing all the slaves in the mall for Brim hurting him. He’ll be
punishing Brim. It’s strangely just, in a way, since he never punishes
anyone he doesn’t feel deserves it... which isn’t to say he doesn’t
still run slaves ragged. That’s not punishment in his eyes, though...
just business.
So with Murky gone, while he’s not going to be nice to
the crew, he’s also not going to take out his anger on them for Murky
being gone... particularly since it was Protégé that took Murky away and
the three friends of Murky’s didn’t have anything to do with it.
So I
would figure he’ll punish Brim for beating him up and Glimmer and Coral
will just be treated like normal slaves, two more of his number, no
more unique or deserving of pain than any other.
You are pretty much right. It's all a matter of what he thinks will harm Murky even indirectly, as you no doubt saw later on.I’m guessing this is ‘cause they don’t actually “council” him. In any case, I’m looking forward to those descriptions...
I did try to sneak some in through Chapter 17 and Shackles' own abstract appearance in 18 but I'll certainly see what I can do here and there!I suspect a wet mane Murky would do Ragini no favors. No, when she came
back, the bucket would likely be full of concrete and shrapnel.
Tough love, indeed.
Murgini is truly a thing to you now, I think. xDNot like this vendetta you all have in removing every instance of “z” from your version of English in its entirely...
I think you'll find our "version" of English is the original, my friend. ;)No, he doesn’t.
Just forbid him from talking.
There’s never any
reason to ask him anything... there’s nothing Protégé should need to
know. Give Murky an order, he’ll do it, never saying a word. Given
Murky’s ears, it could be argued that Protégé should never need him to
confirm his orders... Murky will be able to hear them right the first
time, every time, even if they’re whispered under Protégé’s breath.
You
could even say you dislike his voice, or just that “Slaves should be
seen and not heard.” The use of the word “Master” is entirely
unnecessary given any context of interaction... unless someone ELSE
addresses Murky, at which point he’d better answer them with “Master”,
which is NOT something Protégé is telling him to do right now...
Crap.
Put simply, Protégé is nervous. He doesn't want to leave much to chance and he still sees himself as Murky's master. It's essentially a look into that Protégé isn't quite out of the Master/Slave connection as he thinks he is....unless this is a saying. Be the gray man, maybe? *shrug*
It is indeed a saying. To just be anyone in a crowd. Be no-one special.Murky: .....*fomf*
Protégé: Murky, put those away, ponies are staring!
Murky: *stares at erect wings* Iswearthishasneverhappenedtomebefore.
Ragini: *to herself* Oh yeah, I still got it... *grin*
...but
really, try putting any other character in the fic in Ragini’s place,
here, male or female. Play through the interaction of having the
character jokingly call Murky a trotting disaster, smile, then wink at
him as the character walks away. Glimmer might do it as a tease, knowing
Murky knows better than to think of her that way, but this is a flirt.
It just is. Glimmer does this exact thing all the time, in fact, though
it’s usually accompanied by her brushing the pony she’s after with her
tail as she walks away. Ragini might be doing it as a bit of a tease,
not putting much thought into it, but it IS a flirt, particularly since
they aren’t familiar-enough to be friends.
...this is a really weird
way for her to behave all of a sudden... unless she’s doing it because
Protégé is there? In which case I don’t follow why she would...
Hahahaha, oh that made me laugh that little exchange there.
I see griffins as being quite elbow bumping, mutually teasing, consistently testing the limits of their interactions with those around them really. They are very militaristic in Kkat's world and it's how those I've lived around in a family heavily influenced by the military seems to act sometimes. It's not quite that here with Ragini (personally, I'm not a big fan of this "over military" theme in too many stories lately) but it's sort of an aspect that she will sometimes just do something simply to see how he reacts. So you might not be entirely wrong. ;)In AskRedEye, the answer to this was simple... and it’s one I agree with.
Red
Eye didn’t trust anyone to do it right. If it took longer and he had to
retire, or even just died... Stern couldn’t run the city right. Not
really. She follows him and believes in him, but she’s a mercenary and
lacks the finer details of his vision. There was no Protégé to trust in.
There was no one that had his vision and sense of what really needed to be done and what needed
to be sacrificed to do it. He needed everything up and working before
the children of the cathedral could take over right as slavery was
abolished.
He really didn’t have a lot of faith in Unity, and was
getting sick of himself by the time he tried to join with Littlepip,
which was all the more reason why he wanted her to take over while he
worked to suppress the Enclave commander... he felt she would do what
was needed. She did in Arbu, after all.
Plus, he’d long known the
Enclave were going to come down to try and wipe them out for the simple
reason that they existed in the first place. He needed to be prepared
for that, too.
Long story short, after wiping out his own stable and
doing his best to stay afloat at the head of an army of monsterous
ponies, some of them literal monsters lead by a psychotic “goddess” bent
on world domination and, therefore, directly in conflict with his own
goals... all in a city built on nightmares and horrors against a
sky-born, all-but-untouchable enemy with vastly superior technology and
bent on genocide of all earth-born ponies... the reason he rushed things
was because he was afraid. Very, very afraid.
And he had every reason to be.
I like to think I left enough room in there that what Protégé replies with isn't nessesarily overruling how Red Eye himself might feel. So AskRedEye is entirely still believable to this should a reader choose to take that feeling out of it.Oh yeah, Ragini might terrify Murky when she shows up, but he really can’t help but watch when she leaves...
...okay, I’m done for this chapter :P
Well he has to broaden his artistic knowledge from examples somehow. :p“Just get to fuck you little weasel!” <--Am I supposed to understand this?
Slang.“Only when I saw the growing darkness did I realise it before he melted
away through a space so thin even I couldn't squeeze through! A blink
spell!” <-- Okay, you must have been really tired right here, or
you’d know why this is absurd. Murky describing a spell that causes a
pony to disappear into either nothingness or, at the least, become
really small, as being a “blink spell”? Why would he call it that? Could
he at least say, first, that the guy disappeared in “the blink of an
eye”?
Blink spells are fairly standardised magic terms. I'd imagine anyone in a world involving spells would know them as much as they'd know "telekinesis." At least that's what I think.“drop of information somewhere that there will be less outside ears.” <--somewhere where there will be less
...but your way is probably good, too. It just took me a couple reads to understand.
Changed it anyway. Along with other things too. I don't ignore em, trust me! xDWhat does that look like? And when did Murky learn to recognize that on sight?
True point that I lacked a description. May have to change that. But Murky's been in Filly long enough to recognise them.“I have much respect but I have hid away in the FunBarn for years now other than a small group nearby in the bumper plough pit.”
Accidental writing of myself into a corner. I had stated he was Unity's master yet in his character description he's meant to have been this slaver who's very out of touch with the "real work" for a long time so he holds little popularity.Seriously, she is obsessed with Red Eye’s vision. All her work is to
create his paradise. Even if she inexplicably hated Protégé’s guts she
would absolutely vote the way of Red Eye because she feels he knows best
and his work is the guiding force in her life.
If she’d learned of him at a young-enough age, she’d probably have his symbol on her flank.
You're likely right, but as you mentioned in 'future self' there, they simply don't trust her to confide in her at all....how long have you been using English units? I thought only Americans used those...
Since the start. :pI love that Mosin’s office is so cluttered that Murky can be ten feet
away from him and not be worried about being found... just concerned
about getting the signature right.
I saw an image of the Kremlin's archies room once in a book. I'll never forget it. You could lose the entire Red Army in there. Is the point that Murky doesn’t know what he’s talking about?
Because I don’t understand what he’s saying he did.
He mocked it up just enough that they believed it was the true form that they believed what they saw. Murky misinterpreted it as an element of lookalike rather than...well, y'know what Glimmer meant.Chainlink’s ugly, he’s FAT, he’s beat up to hell and back and a single
poke in the wrong spot would have him doubling-over. Honestly, if she
hurts him, what’s he going to do? He has no authority to get her
punished and she doesn’t much care at the moment how her behavior
reflects on her boss. She can’t even worry about him doing something
underhanded to hurt her because, heck, he’s ALREADY doing that. He’s
already DONE that.
At the very least, she could pretend she (and all
of Filly) already knows what happened to him just days ago to get him
into this sorry state. “What, was your colt friend a bit too rough on
you last night, sweetheart?” Ragini is NOT a slaver; she does not need
to respect this guy, especially after all he’s already done and the
unending hell she could bring down on his head if he made an overt
attempt to take her life.
No griffin would stand for that; not from a pony so far removed from their employer.
You better believe she has that deep down. But Ragini is in the presence of her superiors in this room and specifically Protégé whom she knows must look good here. She is backing his authority to own Murky, but she isn't going to make a scene here. Believe me, she truly has a hate for Shackles now too. She's just very good at hiding it until the time is right...Every time she got frustrated at Murky for not living up to being one of
Red Eyes slaves? Every time she went on about how everyone needed to
apply themselves to his vision?
She was lying. Every. Single. Time.
She doesn’t give a damn what Red Eye is up to, she just pretends to when speaking with Murky.
And
she certainly has no pride for her position within the organization.
She’d likely prefer if Shackles could just oust Red Eye and take over
Fillydelphia itself, run the whole place strictly as a slaving city
instead of a center of industry, so that she can torture slaves with
work without even having a purpose to attribute to it.
This is more a question of ideology. She thinks that Grizzly and Protégé are trying to exploit Red Eye's decisions to gain them power, them being ponies she doesn't want at all. She supports Red Eye ferociously, but she believes that absolute slavery is the key because that's how she likes it. Think of it like strategic voting. She's mad, but she isn't stupid.
Shades don't forgive.
Talons. Don't. Forget.
YES. Someone spotted it! ^^*STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP *
BRAVO! BRAVO! ENCORE!
I'm...not sure. Is that an approval for the rush to save Protégé scene? ^^;
Also, the LMR images as you get worked up into Ragini's revenge are gloriously insane. xDHow many robots does this make that instinctively love Murky?
I mean, they don’t even HAVE instinct, yet they do it anyway!
Would you believe me if I told you that all of the robot stuff was unintentional? xDHonestly, that would be hilarious. Go into a debate, immediately tell
the moderator how old and stupid he is, then accuse him of liking the
other candidate more than you.
The perfect plan!
What can I say, Shackles took the Mitt Romney school of debating. But yeah, anyway, yay MNS! I really enjoyed this chapter. Even more than
the last, which I enjoyed too. We're building up to some AWESOME adventure-y stuff! Yay!
But for now... something wicked is out!
Adventuring is certainly what you're going to get in the next four or five chapters through the finale of Act 2 and into the first few of Act 3. :)
Careful with the name at the end. You might get the shippers on you and Slit? :p
Thanks for the review. Highly entertaining! Always a looked forward to result on each chapter launch. May I ask though, did you ever offer any thoughts on Chapter 18 while catching up? A lot of the crazier imagery and abstract natures I was interested to hear your thoughts on.

...I really hope against hope Wicked Slit turns out to of been BSing the entire time at the debate. Her final chat with Murky, before he left her care, about how he never applied himself to his work... I guess I believed she was one of the Red Eye’s idealists.
She knows the “teacher’s pet” would have backing. She knows Protégé’s vision of Filly, as weird as it might be, IS Red Eye’s. She sees her work as productive and works hard not just to meet quota, but to exceed it and really give Red Eye her all.
Chainlink could hardly be more transparent regarding his intentions. His speech was even about how the slavers needed to push and change the way Red Eye worked, help “develop” his vision or whatever. He does not believe in Red Eye’s message.
The Wicked Slit I thought I knew just wouldn’t stand for that.
...so, when it comes to the election, I kinda hope for a “heel face turn” in which she backs Protégé, plain and simple, for the win. It’d certainly surprise everyone.
