I like the style that artist uses. Makes them seem very unkempt, which is appropriate, but it still retains the cartoony MLP aesthetic. Also, that Blackjack and Glory image. :3

Did a few quick 'n' dirty sketches to figure out just what it is about my version of Blackjack that makes her so damn piss-your-pants scary-looking. Colored them, but haven't gotten around to inking and shading them properly yet.

You do not want to be on the receiving end of that shooty look. Because, well... y'know. If you do whatever it was that brought on that look ever again, she'll turn you into paint.

Big eyes and little mouth. The disproportion between the two, and the shape of her muzzle / jaw is part of what is discomforting / uncanny.

First, pony heads are basically a circle. Yours is oblong with a flattish face, which is more humanish. Ponies don't have a defined jawline -- the jaw just runs straight into the neck. Her neck may also be a touch too thick.

Her muzzle should start slightly lower and make a sharper angle with the face, which will also help with skull shape. Note the ear location -- they come out of the side of the head, not the top. Finally, the eyes should be larger and closer together; again, that will help define the skull shape.

Those modifications weren't an accident. They were quite deliberate.

When I laid down those first few cursed pen strokes, I had set out to insidiously pervert Lauren Faust's iconic designs until they inspired horror and revulsion from all who fixed their gaze upon them. I wanted to make Blackjack intimidating. Unapproachable. I wanted her to give off an aura of gut-wrenching wrongness.

What I was wondering was why I succeeded in that regard, given that the adjustments are so minuscule. A bit higher aspect ratio to the head, repositioned ears, smaller eyes and pupils, a little more definition and pseudo-realism here and there, and suddenly, they're downright frightening to behold. What I had a hard time figuring out was how those dynamics ultimately interacted to produce the final result.

I've seen Blackjack's head drawn a billion different ways. Here's four of them:

One's G4-accurate, one's mine, and the other two are a couple of fairly popular FoE artists' styles. Bonus points if you can name them.

The shape of a G4 pony's head is quite unlike any horse I know of. It's more like that of a human infant. When you start messing around with the proportions, you end up with that same exact gut reaction that you'd get from showing someone an image of a stereotypical Grey alien. Even by eyeballing the proportions of a G4 pony, I can tell that they follow the Golden Ratio very strictly, but someone else made a chart that confirmed what I already knew:

This is perhaps one of the leading reasons why the show is so popular. It has this certain mathematical je nais se quoi that draws you in and doesn't let go. The golden ratio is found everywhere in nature and in architecture. The human brain is very keenly aware of such things, and our evolution probably played a role in it. Proportions that deviate from this ideal are subconsciously regarded as a sign of genetic deformity, leading to the uncanny valley effect.

This can be exploited to induce specific reactions in the audience.

In the case of my variation on the original model, the emotion I was going for was... oh, what's that? Yes.
