I've been meaning to. I'm also a cyberpunk nut, so it's been at the top of my list of shows to watch for a while now.stringtheory wrote:

Scienza wrote:My taste in anime tends to range towards the serious philosophical side of the medium, so stuff like Madoka, Evangelion, etc. I'm pretentious as hell, so I get a kick out of deconstructions and philosophical examinations and whatnot. The fact that I still haven't seen Ghost in the Shell is a sin for which I burn every day.
I also love the shit out of more fun anime like Cowboy Bebop and KLK, though.
Have you watched Stein's Gate?

You can find it on Hulu, the first season's free on youtube: link. I'd recommend watching the dub if you can't understand Japanese, since at least for me, subtitles in this show go by too fast to properly comprehend when it drops into 'blunt force philosophy'.Scienza wrote:I've been meaning to. I've yet to find a better anime, it's that good in my mind and I will jump into a debate to defend it.swicked wrote:Oooh, I loved that.stringtheory wrote:An amazing anime is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, just the right balance of talking, action, and philosophy from an interesting perspective in a cyberpunk world (It's the only work that I've encountered where tapping an entire country's communications is seen as the right solution).
Gosh, I would no anything for complete cyberization...
The hacker speak is fun, too, with just enough real life basis to not be complete rubbish.
On the one hand going full prosthetic body would be cool, but with the threat of someone hacking your actual brain (everything from false memories to complete control over you) not to mention other...downsides (no genitals). I'd probably give full prosthetices a pass, I'd probably get fully cyberized like Aoi.

Watch it again, you'll hopefully understand it (more) now. The movies' are...okay, not amazing, that honor is reserved for Stand Alone Complex.Vinylshadow wrote:I remember watching Ghost in the Shell when I was a wee lad

Yeah, I'll admit it occasionally gets a bit pretentious, but at least unlike a lot of other pretentious examples I could mention, the plot still maintains a decent speed.swicked wrote:...it can get pretty pretentious at times, but less than the movies and second series.stringtheory wrote:

If you like time travel then yes. The plot could probably move a bit faster, especially at first, but it does pretty well at building tension.Scienza wrote:I haven't. Is it good?Scyto Harmony wrote:Have you watched Stein's Gate?

Personally it's the best anime I've ever watched. A bit slow at first but it's one of those ones that when you get to the end and all the loose ends wrap up and you go "oooooooooooohhhhhhhh, That was awesome!".
Edit: Oh yeah, and conspiracy. Lots and lots of conspiracy.

Make sure you watch a fan sub, the official subs (and dub) replace the japanese jokes with out-of-place English/internet ones.Scyto Harmony wrote:Scienza wrote:I haven't. Is it good?Scyto Harmony wrote:Have you watched Stein's Gate?

Personally I'd recommend Trigun. It's kinda goofy, and it's age is showing, but it's definitely a classic.
But what I'd recommend for Iron is Pumpkin Scissors. Because it's got a lot of things I'm pretty sure he likes, including:
Post WWI Pre WWII setting.
Takes place in an alternate history Germany.
Has tanks.
Has conspiracies.
Has gratuitous murder.
Has blatant nightmare fuel.
Has a gentle giant that becomes a psychopathic killer at will.
Has a female lead character who has a giant sword thingy that can crush a mans skull through a helmet.
It also has a recurring dick joke.

Rito, what are you doing? I do not believe rebooting the lore to appeal to those who never cared for lore in the first place will make them care any more, and those who do care will be irate. Gameplay and story used to be integrated to a degree, and now you want to have them split? And what's this poor excuse that you call lore now a days? Gutting characters to make them fit. Skarner used to be the last of his kind for a reason, now turned into a gatekeeper monster for Shurelia. And Xerath, a character with a tragic backstory turned into Jafar.

Anime spitting on your childhood again?
Eh, don't feel bad, Swick, you're not the first to want to tie my wings and buck me off a cliff
Life's no fun if you don't have any enemies
It's rather fun, especially if its got lots of sharp rocks you have to avoid on the way down to land on the field of jagged rocks below~♥
I always try for a faceplant, that seems to appease many people who hate me

Granted, I mostly read manga over anime because I control the pace, but occasionaly I watch one here or there. Not a huge fan of fanservice for the sake of fanservice, and certainly not of love polygons. A bit uninterested in most shounen manga. In contrast to that, I enjoy Toriko, One Punch Man, and Kill La Kill. Fairy Tail to me is around the same level as the big three. Getting recommendations for Psycho Pass. Want to eventually watch Nanoha.
Psychopass is pretty good, it's got the occasional plothole, I'm not sure if that's an issue with translation or not. I always watch the dubs when experimenting with anime. Worse case scenario an anime is bad the dub will at least usually be funny. But besides that it's definitely got some pretty interesting ideas in it.

@last
Heard that it is a bit reminiscent of the film Minority Report. Biggest problem with anime for me (aside from the dub/sub argument. I like original dubs (also find it hilarious when there are calls for the RWBY original jp dub) with English subs) is the amount of time needed for each episode. A lot of crime drama shows I can just toss on the background and pretty much visualize what happens on screen (like NCIS or CSI). But there is a lot of humor to be missed if I do not visually and auditorially pay attention.
Also, nice avatar, what is that supposed to be? Kinda looks like (s)he is doing part of Gangnam Style.

There's always something lost in translation, and then even more is lost in terms of dubs, which is why I tend to go for the original japanese releases as often as I can

She's my attempt at humanizing your character. And it's just fail posing on my part, accidentally made one leg too long and her arms are supposed to be crossed but it's hard to convey that with circle hands.
