Okay, so first of all the art there looks great. But more than that, it does what doesn't get done enough and actually makes them look like they're in rough shape: too thin, worn down, injured, underrested. It's wonderful.

Is there a word for things that are creepy without having any creepy elements and horrifying without containing anything that should horrify?

In this case, I'd say it's related to dramatic tension, in that knowledge of the context and story-specific symbolism brought out in the art create that kind of atmosphere, on top of the basic turnabout inherent in knowing her excellent hand is about to lose.

Also, I think it helps that the Dealer's coat seems to be caught in a wind, but they're indoors and, for example, Blackjack's hair indicates still air. Lighting and general level of detail help, too.

Yeah, I caught that one, and while I didn't seriously consider replying, I was thinking, "So no FoE story is ever allowed to have a larger-scale conflict than the original?" It's not like you'd complain that Kkat was trying to top last performance if she wrote the same concept.

Hah, his points are:
1. It's too long.
2. The characters are repetitive.
3. The characters are repetitive (hah).
4. (I have no idea, something about the protagonists being pitiable and they meet each other "And their finals in most are similar.")
5. It's too grimdark.
6. It's a fanfic about a conflict bigger than the original's was.
7. He doesn't like it and stuff about darkness, naruto, and that the fic is repetitive (again).

So okay, point by point.
1. I don't think this is a way you want to go when FoE was, until PH surpassed it, the longest story in the Pony fandom, and was published at a rate as fast as or faster than PH was in its first 11-12 months, before the slowdown. At least it's not coming in a post also praising MN7, which is probably going to break a million words.
2. Okay, I can understand having issues with the bleak, sad tone, and large amounts of whining. On the other hand, if you have characters go through the PH wringer and come out all smiles all the time, you've probably made characters that are really terrible people.
3. If you can't predict what a character is going to act like after this long, they weren't well characterized.
4. Glory's primary tragedy was somewhere between over and being coped with very well by the late 20s. P-21 and Scotch were there by the 50s. Lacunae never exactly got past there, nor did Luna. And I found pretty much everyone very sympathetic, on the whole. So without a better underlying reason why not, looks like a matter of taste.
5. This wasn't about grimdark, but about sex. And oh my, is this point a pratfall. When he said "the very "right" opinion about some character’s rump," well, you know who did that way, way more? That mare in the picture. Her friends made a joke that her cutie mark should have been for staring at asses. As for PH being a paradise for cloppers, unless a lot was changed in the Russian translation or this guy has a very low bar for porn, I think he's just wrong. While yes, there were various scenes in which sex was described in a vague, general way, and there were other spots that were more concrete but not involving sex (see Blackjack/Lancer scene at the Society, for instance, as an example of sexual tension without sex), they don't reach the level of clop, and I just don't see how it could reach the level of a paradise for it. And PH's equivalent to 20.5 isn't even included in the story. Just wow.
6. Man, it's fanfiction.
7. Okay, I'll give that if you don't like things that look like shounen anime/manga, PH might be hard. But that's more of a tone issue than plot directly, and although the main plot wasn't the fastest moving, you can't really look at something built on moving the narrative through subplots and intermediate actions in the same way. It's just not constructed that way.

Oh, well that's a pity.  That artist is also the one who drew this, and I like their Red Eye pictures, among others.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking an Arbu parallel, but really intentional here. But if you wanted to do it right, it should have been the bar Twilight and Big Macintosh went to, or maybe Mixer's. On the other hand, given how much the guy seemed to hate the sexual content, maybe that really was it. Why he'd use ur-gay Littlepip to say something about Blackjack, I don't know. I suggest cognitive dissonance, which would be in line with some of the points of the writing.

Acknowledging it, and following with a ":3" emoticon, is pretty suggestive. Saying "popcorn I stocked up in advance" is an almost dispositive indication that you were fishing for a blow-up reaction. That's pretty much exactly one definition of trolling.

The point here? Mockery and occupying a position of superiority, because riffing is fun.
