Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Personally, I prefer not to refer to Cadance that way. If she's a unicorn cool.
But given that the IMP alicorns exist I don't really see the point in seperating Cadance specifically given that the definiton of Alicorn in that universe doesn't seem to mean anything more than "Pony posessing both horn and wings" unless you want to argue that those alicorns are not alicorns.
That (I think) would just confuse everything though.

@Last
I dunno, FOE alicorns are definitely hyperpowered magic users, compared to normal unicorns, and they've also got earth pony bits in there, too. They're not on the same level as Luna and Celestia, of course, but they were meant to be more than just unicorn/pegasus hybrids, I think, so if Cadance is indeed just an aberrant hybrid, you could make an argument that IMP alicorns are called alicorns because they're supposed to emulate the Princesses, whereas Cadance was not because she was just a mutation or something. It does seem simpler to just refer to her as an alicorn, though, and let the eggheads define the lines between Princess, IMP, and Cadance variants.

Nallar doesn't give a page count, though, so thanks for providing me with that information.
That means that PH is a little over four-fifths the length of Worm. Wow.
And to think, if it ended on Chapter 75, assuming an average length of 20,000 words per chapter, that would come out to almost 1.6m words in total, or about twice as long as a KJV Bible.
That's a lot of words. And assuming an average word length of 5.2 characters per word, plus a quite a bit for rewritten sentences, I estimate that means it's taken somewhere between seven and fifteen million-plus keystrokes to write PH thus far.
Somber, if you're not already using a mechanical keyboard, like a Noppoo, Filco or a Metadot Das, you should be. That poor membrane keyboard is probably on its last legs.

@OAC
Hold on, first off I agree on the point that IMP alicorns are stronger than the average unicorn. But I'm not sure that Cadance is weaker than them...? I'm not really sure how I want to debate this.
I don't really want to continue this here, I recommend moving this to the official but before we do that I want to start to begin building a definiton of wht an Alicorn is.
You seem to believe that an Alicorn is a pony that not only has a wing and a horn but demonstrates attributes of all three races. Is that correct? Or is there anything you like to add?
In this case the IMP alicorns are NOT alicorns. We know that Red eye wanted to create a new goddess that had three ponies of all the three races. The IMP alicorns have wings but I believe they only have the attributes of unicorns because of the material that was used to create their base.
So again the IMP alicorns are not alicorns by that definition.
So does Cadence have these traits... Well we don't know. At least not in PH we've never met her. Cadance could be a unicorn a pegasus or even an earth pony.
But does Cadence exhibit any of the inherent traits of the three races in the show.
Well what would those be?
Are unicorns more intelligent?
Pegasus more agile?
Earth ponies more enduring?
That's the first question we need to answer before we can decide whether or not Cadance fits that definition.
If however you believe she isn't an alicorn because of something else entirely like her abilities or origin... Well then that's a completely other discussion. But again I would say the IMP Alicorns are not Alicorns in that case.
Anyway I'd suggest continuing the discussion in the official.

In Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell Cadance is shown as being born a pegasus, but later ascended after defeating a witch with the power of love (I think, I don't have the book and am only going by half-remembered plot synopses).O. She was adopted by Celestia as a niece and made an Alicorn
....
Hm...what if Cadance had been one of the early IMP testers that, for some reason, didn't see any change into an Alicorn until much later
I don't know, 200 year coma and awakens to find herself having flashes into the mind of the Goddess or something

I was rereading PH for the fifth or sixth time, and just earlier today, i read chapter... i think 17? i just found something i thought was interesting. Blackjack's memory orb experience showed Celestia speaking of the last Caesar's predecessors. the father and grandfather were flexible, but he was more like his great grandfather.
then i remembered that way later on, Lancer spoke of the position of Great Caesar as one that was democratic, not passed down by blood.
... so i'm just wondering. was Celestia misinformed, or was Lancer?

Yes, I found that odd as well. I'm currently thinking that members of the same family just happen to keep being elected.pokeperson1000 wrote:I was rereading PH for the fifth or sixth time, and just earlier today, i read chapter... i think 17? i just found something i thought was interesting. I'm a bit late on reading the chapter, but I found things of editorial significance (aka suggestiogogs)
Also... "Make lunch, not war." I almost feel like Goldie expositioned about the Tappahani just so this joke could be made. Well done!

No, I think he's saying 'poison'.“Posion?” the mare asked.
Hrm... 'than'?Luna could easily be a worse tyrant that Equestria has ever known.
Her name should probably be capitalized here.“Pinkie,” Pumpkin cake said as she trotted up to the mare.
Pound...?"[...]not allowed to arrest him without her order,” Pound. “There was a memo.”
There's dialogue from two different ponies in this one paragraph...“What?” Goldenblood said as he backed away, but Pinkie Pie kept babbling and sputtering over her self as she struggled to string words together. “The Cakes! Spike! Twilight... Goddess! Murky... how...”
...Right, whatever you say, Goldie.I suppose my partial exposure at Littlehorn of exposure made me immune to the chemical.

Okay, that bit has been deleted. It's a pity to lose it, but it's just a bit of color while the thing it conflicts with is plot-crucial, so… yeah. Argh. Sorry.

Happen, or they made sure their son would be chosen next. In my country of Poland our kings were chosen by the nobility from second half of XVI century until the end of XVIII (which, on the side note, was borderline retarted, as they often ended up electing a member of another country's royal family, and they wouldn't care much for Poland - the very first one, for example, run away to become the King of France). Two of the elected kings, nearing the end of their lives, began giving the nobility more privileges to ensure that the next time there would be an election their son would be chosen. Sigismund III Vasa's both sons were Kings of Poland (and Grand Dukes of Lithuania) after him, first Władysław VI Vasa, and then after him John II Casimir Vasa, and...
... and this is a post on a forum about a story of a post-apocaliptic world of talking ponies...
Were was I... right, the Caesar could start making deals with the certain tribes to ensure his son would be chosen next.

Would that mean that the Caesars married a wife from a different tribe each time? Tribe heritage is passed from the maternal side, and a Caesar cannot be elected from the same tribe consecutively.
I have no idea how to use quote boxes. I've only created my account less than a week ago. Sorry.

Use (quote) to start the quote, and (/quote) to end it. Only instead of (), use []. :)

Sorry for taking so long with this... I really do hope you'll be okay, sir, please try to take care of yourself.
- Chapter 67 Commentary:
It really is surprising just how many ponies survived the apocalypse when you really think about it. It goes right up there with wondering how many pegasi are really left with all the dashites that fill PnP games.
The shadow realm really does sound like a creepy place... though neat in it's own way... maybe in a less dire time.
I actually hadn't considered at all that someone might come looking for Blackjack so she wouldn't /have/ to try to find her way back to the palace. That was a very pleasant surprise, especially for it to be Tenebra.
"Granted, they're all rare, but you only have to run into one once for it to kill you." - That's a healthy outlook to have on dangers... especially since rare things tend to be far more common than they have any right to be, unless it's something beneficial.
Blackjack's rant to Tenebra about her life is really quite sad.
"Like gluing all the furniture on the walls." - Possibly the least stupid of the plans, at least it would have been kinda funny.
I was a little concerned with the "echo" of Steven, because I thought I remembered him already being in FoE, and I didn't want people to complain about it... The one they used was just a generic sea serpent though.
It's interesting that Blackjack's natural inclination is to teleport now, rather than physically running.
The description of Tenebra trying to run from the echo is really quite sad as well... I'm glad Blackjack was able to save her, even though it hurt (just a "4", heh...), and at least she knew enough to keep her from injuring herself during the seizure. I imagine the weakened batpony genetics probably plays a big part in what makes the echos so deadly, rather than it /only/ being because Blackjack has been through so much.
Ah, so Cognitum is leading the Harbingers against the Brood... that's probably part of why Glory was so upset...
Honestly the fact that Goldenblood would put such an unnecessarily complex blockade in front of his cell did not surprise me at all, what a jerk... The whole "your heart will stop and you will never wake again" is just overkill... There were no unicorns in the batpony castle, and it was exceedingly unlikely any would ever get in, let alone be allowed anywhere near him...
Poor Tenebra, sailing through the air, heh... She was very cute here though. I know there's a lot of factors involved, but I certainly wouldn't mind if Glory let Blackjack cuddle with her for a bit (or more).
If I remember you mentioning right, the memories in this chapter were all just separate ideas you'd wanted to use at some point in the story. For being something like that, I think you worked them into the chapter very well, to the point probably no one would have expected they weren't meant to be there from the beginning.
The first memory orb is simply a great bit of story, although it's certainly sad with so many ponies getting killed.
It is nice learning little things about the other zebra tribes, it really helps in however small of a way to make them more real.
"The black stripes ran like ink, but every second his horrible injuries were restored." "Amadi." - Of course it was Amadi, that bastard... Well it certainly does explain Goldenblood's reaction in the storeroom memory. He gets around a lot.
The description of the cloud is really well done.
The second memory orb is well done too, though it makes for quite a contrast, going from the school setting of one of the major events of the war to a back-alley bar (while no less important of an event, the feel of scale makes it seem extremely small).
"How many of those has she had?" "She hasn't even had that one. I don't think she's figured out she needs ta drink the damned thing first." - Poor Twilight... This is one of those kind of lines that gets used a lot for characters who don't drink, but it's still always funny, or at least as funny as it can be. So this explains why Twilight was getting smashed in the fragment Blackjack saw while trying to wake up Lacunae.
When it was first brought up with Scotch, I really thought memory removal would be a good solution... it definitely didn't help Twilight any...
The discussion between them leading up to the creation of the Gardens of Equestria is an interesting little bit of debate. In an odd way it's nice to see Twilight win him over, even if she had already lost...
"And then I felt a very familiar stillness in my chest as my heart stopped." - The traps on these memory orbs are just really sad... I tried to make light of it thinking "even Rolo could last longer than that"...
I'm going to skip re-reading the third memory orb here though... The scene with the mint-als is incredibly painful, though it could just be me overreacting...
The fact that Pound and Pumpkin were willing to turn on Goldenblood to protect Pinkie was touching, though I do wish they'd roughed him up.
Well... considering that Goldenblood arranged this prison for himself, and that he knew enough to be able to glance outside between, I'm /really/ hoping he'll be able to get it to let Blackjack out without killing him... After all, he does have a lot left that he needs to be responsible for.
"If I can taunt him, I'll be able to select the perfect death." - Yay for being able to negotiate with computers, heh.
"She shouldn't have empty seats. Makes her look weak." - Ah... that's love for you... Even helping someone when they're going to kill you.
"She scooped up another handful of gems. In the midst of the heap was a large hoof-sized chunk of bubblegum-pink quartz." - Well that was surprisingly easily delivered... I can't help but wonder if he'd thought to just say "Littlehorn" if it would have gotten her attention or not...
"He was awoken by an especially loud groan from the dragoness." - Normally this type of scene would make me feel a lot worse, but I could at least take solace in the fact that Retl would (probably) enjoy it.
The descriptions for the cloud spreading through Canterlot are very well done. Well... Lyra had me crying again...
And again when he meets with Rarity... Telling her she's still beautiful is surprisingly touching.
"I suppose my partial exposure at Littlehorn of exposure made me immune to the chemical." - Extra exposure.
I really hope Velvet never finds out that the Batponies just left Fluttershy there... she would definitely not be happy with them...
"I jumped on him, smacking him upside the head with a hoof. 'It! Is! Not! About! You!'” - The entire conversation between Blackjack and Goldenblood is great, but I'll admit I did get quite a bit of satisfaction from Blackjack hitting him. I had no doubt at all that he'd be so self-absorbed about dieing, I'm just glad Blackjack was able to get through to him.
"If the Caesar won, or Luna won and became a tyrant, the possibility for atrocity were unimaginable." - This sounds a little awkward to me. I want to say it should either be "possibilities" or "was"... but I'm probably wrong.
"You weren't going to save ponies. You were going to make them." - I'm really not sure if this was an awesome idea, or super-creepy...
And there's the falling star that he saw in the mirror...
I'm really worried about what's going to happen in the next chapter, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. Reunion, yay!

Just so you know, apparently that's not the proper procedure for helping someone in a seizure.Ryx wrote:The description of Tenebra trying to run from the echo is really quite sad as well...
Aye, it happens that someone already spotted this one, but thanks.Ryx wrote:"I suppose my partial exposure at Littlehorn of exposure made me immune to the chemical." - Extra exposure.
No, I think that you're quite right, and this one no one else reported, too. :)Ryx wrote:This sounds a little awkward to me. I want to say it should either be "possibilities" or "was"... but I'm probably wrong.

Oh dear... well... at least it worked in the story.O. Hinds wrote:Just so you know, apparently that's not the proper procedure for helping someone in a seizure.
Dang, I should have tried harder to come up with a joke about Goldenblood exposing himself after all then, heh.O. Hinds wrote:Aye, it happens that someone already spotted this one, but thanks.

When someone is having a seizure, you're supposed to turn their head on their side so they can't choke, try to cushion their head, and prevent them from hurting themselves as the thrash.WavemasterRyx wrote:Oh dear... well... at least it worked in the story.O. What's with all the hugging of Somber?
and why gently?
The only hugs you'll get from me are bone-crushing hugs
*opens forelimbs* C'mere~ *grins (only slightly) evilly*
If it helps, we can hug at the Fluttershy Medical Center so you can get ICU treatment quickly
Also, is there some unspoken rule about having traumatic visits to Hospitals in FoE stories?
LittlePip visited...uh....I forgot the name, Blackjack had the horrow show of "PLAY?" and now apparently Murky (MN7) is about to go through his own gauntlet

I think it's an unspoken rule that abandoned hospitals need to be fucking spooky.Vinylshadow wrote:

Nearly forgot about that. I didn't get to read the chapter until after that bit was edited out.swicked wrote:Nah, he was raped already and Fuzzy went back and edited it out.Vinylshadow wrote:And of course the rape or near rape of the main character
