This comment come from someone who is privileged enough to never have had to deal with such a situation, but for those having to deal with such a thing, may I suggest growing a spine ?Last wrote:So if you're suggesting that an another author writing about RD would be left alone then I'd have to disagree.
The internet is where the trolls lives, and if you start compromising your creations just to please them, well son you're going to have problems.

I don't know, I'm not talking to you specifically there, I'm just giving my opinion on all the "Somber ruined it forever again" drama. Feel free to ignore it at your convenience.Last wrote:I get the feeling at some point I was misundertood.

You know what Harmony? You're right. About the whole spine growing thing. Again I don't necessarily agree I just see why they'd be upset by it.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I'm still like eight chapters back so this whole RD lives thing is news to me, but I'm of the opinion that Somber can do whaterver the hell he wants in his fanfic, and that should have no bearing on anyone elses fanfic, even one thats assuming PH is canon. If I'm not mistaken, at some point there is a discontinuity between FOE and PH for that very reason.

As an aside, maybe this could be argument enough to not have discussions regarding PH in this thread ? 'Cause one of the reasons I don't frequent the Comment Thread as much as I did is the spoilers that get thrown there (sometimes of chapters that aren't even out yet... ), and if spoilers start to leak here as well, I'm not going to be a happy panda.Erumpet wrote:I'm still like eight chapters back so this whole RD lives thing is news to me

Sometimes, you need to listen to criticisms. And sometimes, you just need to tell other people to fuck off.
It's a case of using your judgment

Well I'm of the opinion PH shouldn't be discussed here at all. I kinda went against my own opinion. Sorry guys.
But yeah I'm for PH sticking to the PH thread.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
- Spoiler'd because discussion is over, but still here because I was interested in the topic - more of a discussion of headcanons, readership, and writing than PH now:
- If you write a shipping story about Twilight, you'll have (hopefully few, but some) people coming in to complain about you daring to write nonsense about their real-life waifu Twilight Sparkle. =P Welcome to the wonderful world of fanfiction, where intellectual property and headcanons collide in hilarious ways. Like I said, some people will have unrealistic expectations, but you should answer only to your own version of the universe.
Somber doesn't own anything about RD or white unicorns with black/red color schemes any more than that one guy is married to Twilight Sparkle. I don't like discounting the existence of unreasonable people, but in some cases you just have to say, "Welp, can't please everyone - what you're saying isn't true in my story, sorry; if you can't accept that, then you'd best sod off." If someone wants your story to conform to another story that you don't want it to conform to, then they are not worth listening to. It's like they're complaining that dragons in A Game of Thrones only have four limbs, when they clearly should have six because the Spyro games' dragons have six, and also why don't Daenerys' dragons talk, huh? Both are using the same mental space about dragons, but one is using it very differently from the other, and there is plenty of room for both unless the reader/consumer decides that one is somehow more "true" than the other, making the other wrong. At which point GRRM would be right to blink confusedly and then move on, perhaps mocking them on his blog. (Note: this specific thing has not happened, but there HAVE been people who complained about his dragons having no front legs and being "wrong" because of it; for further examples of this crazy phenomenon, see the "purists" about vampires and the like) So, yeah, this is a thing that happens, but sometimes people bring things with them to a story (unreasonable expectations, short attention spans, outright illiteracy) that prevent them from enjoying it. These people are not your audience. From an economic standpoint, you might (might - if you ask me it'd still make you lose some artistic integrity and stuff, but there are always practical considerations) want to change things to make it possible for them to enjoy your work, but this is fanfiction - the only currency is social capital, and do you really want social capital from people who are married to Twilight Sparkle? =P
I really should be writing my actual essay...

Gonna try to start The Ship up. Gonna try to use the Team9000 server again.
Remember, in the Steam window, go to "View", than Servers and look up The Ship.

@Moody, Erumpet
I did my best to just analyze the technique of veiling information to make the reader keep reading (basically, turning everything into a puzzle to prompt people to think hard about little things and get obsessed with the story[s]). It's hard not to get drawn into talking about the interplay of the different layers the second you have to start citing specific examples, though. Like... what should I pretend is going on here - what's being said by the narrator, what a reader would actually know is going on here if he or she had only read this far, or a post-reading interpretation of what's actually going on here? Or... something in between, even! I think I managed to work in how fucked it all is near the beginning, so hopefully that will answer any questions about how fast and loose I treat the book's "reality" in my analysis.

While watching the West Wing, I learned that "faffing around" is an actual expression - I have been using this for years while worrying that I was making up a word. I am so happy right now in this moment.

Making up words is great though. That's where a majority of Gavin's humor comes from. That and general incompetence.

Oh don't get me wrong I make up words a lot - I just try to avoid using them when speaking. Especially ones that sound like slang for masturbation. =P

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
@OAC: I'm not sure what your essay is supposed to be about or how far you've gotten, but it sounds like you are concentrating on the veiling of information by the true author. Again, I'm not sure what your topic really is, but in my few years of college English classes I've been told to ignore the audience when analyzing fiction. Basically, while the author hiding stuff may be keeping the audience reading, what is the significance of the hidden information to the story? If it is solely to keep the audience interested, which it isn't, then that is probably indicative of an unimportant story element. If I were you, I would concentrate on the true authors intent, the frame authors intent, or Zampanos intent, (or maybe all three or some combination of them) and the reason they would have to keep information hidden. Basically, how does the hidden information effect the how the story is told, and/or what the story is saying. One cool thing about House of Leaves is that it has three 'authors' for you to write about, so you have three times the amount of material. Also, you know that because two of the authors are made up, their every action and motive can and probably is symbolic/meaningful. If I am way off base about your essay topic, then sorry, and anyone that knows more about writing than I (which is most people here) is more qualified to tell you how to write your essay, but that is my opinion in the context of house of leaves.
