Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
As I watch Markiplier, I realized that I dislike it when a horror game or film relies on jump scares to be scary. I think it's fine when it crops up occasionally, like when you turn around after finding a dead end only to find that the monster happens to be right behind you, but don't fucking use that as a crutch. I find that having my nerves jolted stops being fun after a while, and starts being annoying. I'm more for that sense of dread that ambiance brings, and the type of subtle fear that things such as teleporting mannequins bring.

I just generally avoid the horror genre in general. Not too much of a fan of it.

Gothic fiction class has taught me that there are different words for these scares! Terror and horror. Terror is what you're thinking of - the sense of dread and undefined horror, the idea that there is something out there that is stalking you, but is not presently visible or detectable beyond possibly-imagined signs. Horror is the gore, the jump-out scares, and the scary monsters in your face. According to the gothics, the former is ideal, while the latter is less sublime.

Thanks for enlightening me, my friend! I wasn't aware that those were actually words for those two concepts, I thought they were just words interchangeable with "fear". Though, it does make sense after thinking about it, I never really thought about it before.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:@Iron

The Dead Space series had some wonderful moments of Terror. I was especially terrified during the side missions of DS3.Ironmonger wrote:Thanks for enlightening me, my friend! I absolutely must look into that series, then. A game that one can really immerse themselves in seems to be kinda...I wouldn't say rare, but it's definitely not the usual thing. I remember some terrifying moments when I played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Mostly whenever those ReDeads popped up, but the Shadow Temple was quite creepy in my experience. They still kinda give me the willies. I've also heard good things about Amnesia.Tytan wrote:The Dead Space series had some wonderful moments of Terror. I really enjoyed Amnesia, mostly because I hadn't had the game spoiled for me by YouTube playthroughs. I played it with a friend in the room (we took turns) on a beast of a machine (designed to chart underground waterflow - it had something like eight cores, and this was a few years back) in the dark. Really enjoyable experience, definitely some serious panic-inducing moments and really good atmosphere.

Don't be so hasty though. There's terror aplenty, but it loves it's jump scares too. The worst is when you're walking down a dark hallway, expecting a jump, and it never happens.Ironmonger wrote:I absolutely must look into that series, then. What's also really scary is the Morton's Fork sort of situations. Say you go into a bathroom to search for an item while you're inside the big creepy building, and one of the monsters happens to open the door and just stand there. You either die by staying there, trapped, or you risk dying just by attempting escape. It's quite an adrenaline-inducing situation, and I love it.Tytan wrote:Don't be so hasty though. actually there still one bullet in the chamber and he would be dead even before he will be that close to do that trick...and it would be easier (for that range) just to kick weapon away from hands.

Apparently his second kick was aimed for the slide, which ejected the bullet in the chamber.Katarn wrote:^

IIRC this trick good for AK's, not for M's (aka m-16 or M4A1, etc).
