Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
To sum it all up, Argentina invaded the Falklands back in the 80's (during the Margaret Thatcher years) and when she immediately called for the British Navy to prepare for war on two days notice before leaving port, she also asked America to join in the effort. America refused, saying they had no intention of doing a damn thing, no matter how small.swicked wrote:I barely read the news, yet still actually feel a little bad that I have no idea what you're talking about.Kippershy wrote:As for the quoted post - it's because we're sick of being there for the U.S when they do nothing for us in return.
Falklands? Where were they then? Nowhere to be seen. Not even a 'guys, don't do that.' to the Argies.
Now that the bitch Kitchener is trying to pull that shit again, you've got some prominent U.S figures arguing for the Argentines, saying we're in the wrong somehow.
And what of Gibraltar? Not a god damn word on that.
When we've needed help, the U.S won't be there unless it's directly in their interests. When the U.S have wanted help, the only time we turned them down was Vietnam and that was because we saw it for what it truly was - a worthless, pointless, rewardless struggle that had no place in being in the first place.
We've seen the truth behind all this, we see what the cost is, what the reward is and we're not cynical to the end results, we're realistic.
Nothing can make it end well, not at this point. Even if Bashir Al-Assad turned himself in to the U.N and says Syria is to the people, it'd end up in yet more civil war for who gets to take control.
It's fucked.
The UK wants no part in this one, and our government is finally listening.
That said, I don't fault any nation for not backing us when we go to war. This is all way out of hand.
Didn't someone on this forum say that the USA is basically just playing the game Risk on a global scale since we seem to need an army in every country?
Now Argentina is posing to do the same by arguing the same point they were making last time - their country is closer, therefore it's theirs... this is despite the fact the Falklands were populated 300 years before Argentina was ever discovered by the Spanish (or I do believe it was the Spanish.)
The UK has asked the US to give Argentina a verbal slap on the wrist for their hostile attitude but alas, no American governmental figure has made any such comments.
On the contrary, someone (I forget who) was actually arguing that the Falklands SHOULD go to Argentina (despite the fact they have no honest claim to it beyond relative distance and also despite the islanders' wishes to stay British with a 99.1% vote saying so.)
As for Gibraltar, same with the Spanish and the mountain. American figures could easily just make one comment about how childish Spain is being over a mountain they gave away to end a war which has been British for 300 years now - especially when they could have tried to take it back at any time including WW2, but instead wait until they have to use it to try shift focus from their own issues to elsewhere.
They're being extremely petty and making the lives of Gibraltar residents rather annoying when it comes to things like border travel, even going as far as completely banning construction vehicles.
America has done nothing for the UK lately, yet we help out the US.

But when it comes time to own up to that lesson, act up and re-focus your strategies toward European integration instead of doing what you do today (being America's pawn on the continent, and playing "divide and conquer" for your own little interest instead of growing up and being team players)... Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I doubt the United States and Russia will really come to blows. There's too much at stake for that. Russia doesn't need Syria, the United States doesn't need Syria, but they've both given support(in various forms, such as the pledges) to opposing forces.
I'm interested in how this'll fold out, and if this means war for the Canadian Forces, even if it's just the RCAF and Navy as in Libya.
And, it's terrifying. We don't need another war going nowhere.

Hey hey hey, I'm personally all for a EU super state. However, that would mean a fucking huge shake-up of how it currently works and the like. The EU as one big super state would be a hell of a lot of work, but it would prove for the best.Harmony Ltd. wrote:But when it comes time to own up to that lesson, act up and re-focus your strategies toward European integration instead of doing what you do today (being America's pawn on the continent, and playing "divide and conquer" for your own little interest instead of growing up and being team players)... Eh, living's overrated. If video games have taught me one thing, it's that dying just means you get a do-over.
Kip, from my (admittedly limited) knowledge of the Falklands War, it's fairly clear Britain was in the right. But, even with the lack of American support, wasn't the war such a curb-stomp that it inspired a Sabaton song?

Yup. We fucking RAPED the Argentine forces even when they had the upper hand strategically.Mister Frost wrote:Eh, living's overrated. If video games have taught me one thing, it's that dying just means you get a do-over.

I mean, hell. One guy simply walked up to them with a letter telling them to surrender despite the fact the British forces were out on open, flat ground with no cover and they had been badly beaten during the night due to poor circumstances (flat, open ground with no cover v being in a town) (Goose Green) and the Argentines SURRENDERED.
Our ships were ALL anchored in a fucking valley, meaning little to no warning of jet attacks, too. Didn't stop us.
We made some terrible strategic decisions, but came out on top despite it all and actually proved that it's not just strategy that made us win, but pure fucking heart and toughness.
There was one Scottish Brigade that had high-ground holding snipers fire on them all night, and still managed to assault the god damn highest mountain on the island and take it over.

There's a reason that any third-world power to give a first-world military problems does so through guerrilla warfare and through traps and explosives-- when it comes to firepower, coordination, and the skill of the individual soldier, said First-World soldiers really can't be matched.

I'd be wary of integrating Ukraine into Europe simply because of how much this might antagonize the Kremlin.
I mean, if we thought Russia was toxic before, wait until we actually integrated the fucking Ukraine into our little clubhouse.

I still have difficulties believing that a soldier with only four to six month of general training and maybe up to a year of specialist training can manage to have a better morale and stand actual combat better than people with long warrior traditions and years of experience with guerilla warfare.Mister Frost wrote:There's a reason that any third-world power to give a first-world military problems does so through guerrilla warfare and through traps and explosives-- when it comes to firepower, coordination, and the skill of the individual soldier, said First-World soldiers really can't be matched.

Just to clarify, I don't hate any nation...might hate some individuals and surely to hate governments of some nations (I think my own is first to hate at).
My friend once told me, that US have one doctrine - 'suppress IT with heavy fire, wait till dust will settle, then send the troops'.
I wonder how wrong he was..or correct.

That feel when you find incredibly high quality bait that you know someone will like, but then see that it's 100% NSFW and can't be shared on the forum.

Over a million people have been killed in the civil war in Syria, and 4.5 million people have had to flee the country. Now that chemical weapons have been used recently, things have crossed the line? Chemical weapons are horrific, but death is death. If the US had meant to intervene, they should have done so to stop the more conventional mass murdering and other assorted atrocities from war. Obama never should have made such a boneheaded statement. If this 'conflict' happens, it will be another pile of stupid like the Iraq invasion.

Where the hell did you get those numbers from ?Derpmind wrote:Over a million people have been killed in the civil war in Syria, and 4.5 million people have had to flee the country.
Current estimates I hear in the medias, and consistent between the various outlets, put the death toll at over 100,000, and the number of displaced at around 1.5 million.

Even in the Vietnam War, when our soldiers weren't nearly as well-trained as they are today, any large-scale direct firefight ended with the Western troops winning. It has a lot to do with, as I mentioned, coordination, support, and precision as opposed to "warrior traditions"Harmony Ltd. wrote:I still have difficulties believing that a soldier with only four to six month of general training and maybe up to a year of specialist training can manage to have a better morale and stand actual combat better than people with long warrior traditions and years of experience with guerilla warfare.Mister Frost wrote:There's a reason that any third-world power to give a first-world military problems does so through guerrilla warfare and through traps and explosives-- when it comes to firepower, coordination, and the skill of the individual soldier, said First-World soldiers really can't be matched.
