It's hard to apply things like that to the entire country, people in separate provinces often speak differently from another, similar to different dialects spoken in different places in the US, I presume. So, it's quite likely that 'playing a puck' is used by some people, but it may just be restricted as a regional term or even just within a few people.

 That is true with most things, and I might be wrong, but I've lived all over Canada and visited every province, and I've NEVER heard that phrase.

Edit: Every province, not Territories. That's why I think maybe it's from up there.
