You don't need to roll for AGL to get to cover.

Assume that the characters who aren't being played went to cover with you. Only roll their combat.

sorry just I thought at the word "ambush" people would have fired if they were waiting for the group in front to fire, then our group was already in range and knowing their cover was blown the rear group would have engaged immediately in combat letting the forward group to close in. I was anticipating an opening shot

EFS still is governed by perception. Pain can do a perception check himself.

When rolling for your combat, keep in mind all of the enemies in the 'ahead' group are in cover. -5 from all of your combat rolls to attack them. Those behind you do not share this, but you don't have cover from them either.

Also, failures are counted BEFORE the -5. Unless you roll a natural 1-3, the failure and injury to yourself do not count.

Wait mince getting a minus five while in cover doesn't make since. Is that why he has that trait? Does he not take any penalty while in cover? Other wise that trait is awful.

It's not because you're in cover, it's because the enemies are in cover. So yeah, if he was here he'd get -10 while attacking those enemies.

Admiral, Jayne can't roll for another attack after a roll of 3. it hurts him and stops his attacks, so roll to damage him.

but not indoors

mind you I have no qualms about scorch diong it outdoors, but he cant see inside of buildings that are covered but open to the outside.
