the idea is to not fight but to recon anyway, send shadow in to investigate by being sneaky and use the flight capable ponies to come in by air

Actually that's how he was designed from the beginning. Maybe not exactly twice the size but roughly so. Cast Iron's son in my story, Iron Fury, is the size of Luna in height, but larger in bulk. Cast Iron is altogether larger than Iron Fury.
