Again, that would require skill. These are peaceful ponies.

From what I've seen most ponies outside of the Mane 6 are rather spineless and scare easily. If there was someone who could rally and organize them Equestria could have a very capable army. They remind me of something like the Imperial Guard from Warhammer 40k.
They are also ponies peaceful herbivores, when there is conflict over land or resources two herds will have the alphas meet and either merge herds or have a short dance off to determine who goes hungry and who eats tonight. But with the magic of friendship this no longer happens so the chance of conflict outside of giant monster attacks (Quick get me five ponies with attitude!) so pacifism makes sense. Hard to generate a war like culture without some wars.

I didn't want that comparison to imply that they would have a warlike culture. I was more comparing their similarities with the Imperial Guard faction from the RTS games. A group of guardsmen without a leader unit is only worth using as a meat shield for your tanks. However their capabilities increase dramatically when a leader unit is added and more so after upgrades.

Ponies wouldn't be war like, but they wouldn't be a pacifist race. While the residents of Ponyville might have panicked in response to stampeding animals, the Appleossan's were far more willing to throw down to defend their homes. I think that if you want ponies to fight anything other than a defensive war they need to have a strong leader to compensate for low morale. The Royal Guard is lead by Celestia, being lead by a physical god is an immense morale boost, and they seem more like a standing army than a city / royal guard force.

We also don't know much about the empire's of other races and how many there really are. Until the current canon gets expanded on my theory is that Equestrian History was whitewashed and there are more reasons for the prevailing "friendship is magic" theme than the events of Hearth's Warming Eve.

That was a joke. Well, apart from the 'do anything' part, that one's true.

Somber isn't an alcohol-dependant midget, though.

...PH is probably an artifact, however.

Speaking of dwarves...

Fortress is in relative chaos; nine dwarves were felled by a minotaur child. Tantrums, melancholy moods, and deaths of thirst abound. Total dead is a solid twenty so far, with three dwarves looking around for death. I think it's a salvageable situation, however. Population is 101.'

Edit: Oh yeah, and there's a freakin' vampire somewhere in there, too. Brilliant.

Edit 2: Fortress' tantrum spiral continues; no water source, dwarves die of thirst as they get injured in tantrums. Population dropping.

Somber wrote:Honestly, I'm too nervous to really enjoy it. I don't want to screw up. I'm also not 100% what I'm doing because I have no scale of performance. I don't know how my teaching compares to other teachers so I don't know how to do a better job. So I'm pretty sure I'm a lousy teacher and I just hope I don't lose my job next week.

As for the periods. 2 are fine as I'm co-teaching with a mentor who gives me hints. 2 are okay; nothing amazing nor aggrivating. I have an honors class that likes to talk. And then I have a period where the students are just lumps in the seat and have to be spoon fed EVERYTHING. It's really aggrivating...

Anyway, ch 50. I promise I'll get it done asap. Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cup cake in my eye...

Okay, I've been lurking for a few weeks now, figured I would register. Love your story Somber.

I'm a teaching candidate, have been for longer than normal since I switched programs and I've been getting my credential part-time, and I did volunteer work before that. I've got one more year about. Forgive me if I say a lot of stuff you already know.

Obviously as an actual teacher you have more experience than me, but what your dealing with sounds totally normal, from both my own experiences and from what I'm being taught about teaching. Most teachers start out feeling like you suck, until you get comfortable. Your mentor teacher is there to help you feel like you suck less over time, and getting to know the other teachers in general will help a lot as you can get tips from them. Obviously don't gossip, even if other teachers do. It can have a boomerang effect.

English isn't my field, but still, as for the classroom full of lumps, maybe do some forcibly interactive exercises and think-pair-share work where they're forced to work in pairs or groups of three or whatever? Also, while I've dealt mostly with junior high students, I find anytime you can incorporate zombies into the curriculum it helps. If you're teaching literature I'm not sure that will be of much help. I am told that this book is quite good however, although the school board may object to its inclusion in the curriculum.

Also, with any class that is not going smoothly, it helps to take an outwardly sardonic attitude. As in helps to joke but try not to smile too much. It's a sign of weakness, and this is coming from someone whose been told he's actually too lax with students, if anything.

Anyway hang in there. The early going is always the toughest. You need to take care of yourself. We can wait for Chapter 50. Meanwhile I'm going to speculate that it's Morning/Fallen/Rainbow Glory's turn to attempt suicide, causing Blackjack to try to atone by branding herself with a scarlet letter (maybe 'S' for "Strumpet"?).

I like this image (though it sounds like your Zebra headcanon does not exactly match mine; out of curiosity, have you seen the released alpha version of my larger map, the one that I posted in my DA Scraps?)! Depending on the era, we could also add some skyscrapers, airplanes, rotodaens, diesel-pulled trains, etc…

Also, where did you get the Incan influence from?

He was unemployed which meant he had a lot more free time for both writing and thinking about his story and where it was going, where it's at and where it's been.
On top of that, he has three editors which is a massive boost to writing capability knowing that you've got people who'll help you out and tell you what needs changing - so he didn't have to worry about that too much.

On top of that, he's a very dedicated person with the writing skill and creativity to do it in general.

Never compare yourself to Somber... ever. It's a bad move.

My primary theory was he already had a lot of it written and just posted it once a week or something, like what they do with TV shows. I just accept the theory that hes pretty much an avatar of literature or writing god or something lol.
Nope. At our peak, we were repeatedly going from blank space to a finished 30+ page chapter in a week. And no, I have no idea how Somber does it; it took me about a year to write just fifty-something pages.

I saw the old map in green and black right?
And the Incan influence was from a Kkat from the 10,000 comments I rolled through where she described that the Zebra's have buildings that looks like Incan mashed with Roman styling. The Zebra lands described as big mountain ranges crossing African style savanna land. Specifically because the Incan empire had a habit of building roads then building that were both very earthquake resistant and could stand up to mortar fire is needed. Just the kind of construction that could shrug of manticore or hydra attacks if require. And another important factor of Incan style was the building of common use way stops along roads. In the old range of the Inca empire the old roads will have the still standing (Just missing the wood roofs) of common houses constructed so travelers could rest for the night between cities. This again ties into FoE Zebra's because if you had an empire with nasty beasts and you had to travel someplace, then building strongholds along the way even if you don't man them so you have someplace to run to make sense. Over time such strongholds might become towns in their own right.

Aye, the map of Equestria, but have you seem the one of a larger area of the world?

I don't remember if the uploaded version is different from the copy on my computer, but the only differences would probably, I think, be slightly different names for the aircraft I included some ranges for.

Oh, neat; I must have missed that comment. I'm not sure how much of it fits with my headcanon, but at least some of it could definitely enrich, I think.

Also, has anyone else speculated on what the wartime entertainment might have been like? The Equestrian expy of The Masked Marvel might be fun to see (including the "zebra" spymaster with the obviously-painted-on stripes and the very bad fake accent), though I'm not sure it'd make it past the MoI and MoP.
(By the way, watching some of the serial again on YouTube... I don't remember the acting being nearly so stilted when I watched this as a kid. Funny how that works. It's still pretty fun, though.)

I have seen that one with the Mediterranean style setup for Equestrian and... Zebrastan (Literally "Land of the Zebra" in Farsi if you wondered why so many countries end in Stan) but it gets back to the nebulous nature of the show topography as we just got a "canon" map of Equestria which depending on the scale leaves Equestria quite small compared to the Germany sized country most of us were picturing... maybe a bit bigger... maybe Texas or even bigger Saudi Araba sized. I don't think anyone was picturing Equestria on the size range of an Australia or a United States.

O. Hinds wrote:

You'll have to dig because Kkhat gave backstory rarely in comments but I believe it was towards the start of the third 5k comment thread when they got to Zebratown for the first time and questions were asked about Zebras and Zebras in general.

Headcannon is an interesting thing not just in the fact that everyone creates it but if you've left a bit of headcannon blank the first to come along to purpose something typically fills it as any good psychologist will tell you it works the same way with beliefs. If I sit you down and spend ten minutes explaning why thing X is better than thing Y and then leave you alone... if you don't follow up on that and your asked about thing X VS thing Y a week later you will vigorously defend thing X as better than thing Y even if at the time you indicated you did buy the argument that was offered.

This effect which has a very scientific sounding name only applies to brand new subjects of which you've not run across before.

If you have Flutterbitch on your Facebook, you'll know weird shit from that page is normal... but that picture took the cake.
So I showed it to Admiral, and he joked that it would end up on Cloudsville (as I was preparing to post it, no less)... and then he mentioned something about himself in a joking way, so I took the joke a step further and posted my response to it.

It's not really him. It is a girl, believe it or not.
I've studied many traps in my time and I can safely assure you, that's not a trap.
It's a female.

They're not really traps when you go both ways Luna

Too bad that wasn't the Admiral, because I'd [redacted] his [redacted] if he looked like that.
