Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
I've a friend who listened to the FOE audiobook (as far as it's gotten, at least) and they were quite impressed. Also, I'm thinking of reinstalling TF2 for this update. :)IncoherentOrange wrote:This. Few things have me excited nowadays, but that is one of them, and I am excited.
I am also considering listening to Fo:E when I have the time. That sounds like fun too.
As for Friendship is Witchcraft? I didn't really watch it, but I should. I've seen bits and pieces and it was rather much hilarious.

Supposedly, if Youtube's comment section is correct (it usually is not), the update releases in, oh... thirteen minutes, as it will be August fifteenth in Seattle, where Valve headquarters is located.
Edit: Nope.

For a while, I was listening to it to fill time while driving. Then I caught up to them. It really is great; the only problem is its fairly slow update schedule.
There's also a PH audiobook, which isn't nearly as well-done, as the audio has a great deal of noise, but is workable. I've generally tried to pass it through some filtering before listening, but it's still not great quality. That said, I'm happy to have what is available, and am thankful it exists.

Ooh, here's something a bit tangentially related to the story, actually... someone might've found a way to decrease morphine's addictive effects. Take it with a grain of salt, I suppose, since it's Newscientist and, like any non-journal, they summarize and simplify results and thus necessarily lose some of the information from the original study, but... well, if ponies had this tech, P-21 might've never gotten addicted to med-x in the first place. The link.

This may be enough to make me start playing TF2. I've always liked the characters and background and such, and admired the design of the game, but mindless PvP fragfests have never really interested me much. Therefore this update is going to be very bad for my free time.IncoherentOrange wrote:This. Few things have me excited nowadays, but that is one of them, and I am excited.

Bah, never been to Friday night Pony Fortress 2 games, have you. Oh the screwing around I've done. :) how are some of the classes mindless anyways? Sure there are some classes where all you need to do is point and click, but then there's some creative ways to play, like the rocket jumper.

I'm so sorry things aren't going well, sir... If you do end up staying in Motels or anything be sure to ask them if they have any unadvertised specials! A lot of places will, but they don't just openly offer them, you have to ask.@Somber wrote:

And even with all this happening to you, Somber, you still put aside time for us... it saddens me deeply that there's no way I can properly express my gratitude to you or the three wonderful people that help you brushing.
Thank you all so much. *hugs each of you and Somber again*
Alright, deploying commentary. I'm very sorry it takes me so long to write these.
- Chapter 49 Commentary:
Let me just start out by saying... this is another incredible chapter, really packed with content and just... all kinds of emotions.
I had really thought that there would still be some amount of lead-in at the beginning before Blackjack died (or didn't die), rather than going straight into it, so that was quite interesting.
As for this interpretation of death... of Hell... it's so incredible, and absolutely terrifying... I don't even know... How you describe the lightning in particular is... I don't even think there's a way to express just how emotionally powerful Blackjack's death and her recovery from it really are.
"The curse is designed to sever your soul from your mind and body." "The most fortunate are like animals. They have intellect but no will to use it and no personality or sense of self." - Sounds interestingly lose to describing Boo, but at the same time, it really does seem like she's more than that... I can't wait to find out, some day.
"I think it's more that it's hoarding them, like a dragon hoards gems." - Another interesting statement. I am certain they're inside the Eater of Souls, is it trying to collect the voices so their collective screams will be loud enough to power it, perhaps? Which also brings up the question of just who was at the center of the lightning. Whoever it was, they were being affected by it too, which makes it seem unlikely to be the Eater of Souls alicorn... but if it is, then that implies there's something /more powerful/ creating the lightning and... yeah, I'll just leave this speculation to the clever ponies.
Blackjack dealing with the after-effect of dieing is really painful to read, which means you did it very well. I think it's extremely touching that Lacunae never left Blackjack's side the entire time, and did her best to comfort her. So incredibly touching.
Of course the Goddess would be interested in Snails, there's no telling what he would know from the black book. That she could force Blackjack into telling him where to look was definitely creepy... in all ti was another very emotional scene.
The scene of Blackjack breaking down while everyone else is laughing over Stygius and Lacunae's embarrassment is another powerful little piece. It's been so long since I've used it... but this scene could definitely be added to my old list of things that are very much funny but feel wrong to laugh with.
'You should take it off from time to time. I agree it's a great suit, but there's such a thing as too much of a good thing.' The zebra fidgeted as she looked away." - Well... that's definitely a curious reaction... unless I'm simply reading too much into it. Not that I would ever do that.
There's only one problem with stopping a spy system from transmitting. Eventually the people spying are going to want to know what happened, and you're going to end up under attack again, Blackjack...
Which suddenly makes me wonder if Blackjack knows how to actually play "I-Spy", unlike ALL of the Mane 6. For absolutely no reason...
"I reached out and stroked her black and white ponytail." - W-why is it raining in here?
The information on the war from Xanthe is very interesting, as is Blackjack considering what the future would have been like depending on who won (something that definitely interests me, since I'm trying to create my own alternate universe where the world never ended, and 220 years later, ponies are going into space, rather than wandering the Wasteland).
I will admit, it definitely made me sad that Xanthe isn't staying with Blackjack... I really liked having her around.
Blackjack's reaction to Willow's cigarette smoke and lighter were a nice touch.
You know, I really love the way I read. There's just something nice about being able to completely zone out and just not think, and enjoy the story as it unfolds...
For immediate example, the scene of Blackjack breaking into Mortuary to find Ahuizotl. For some reason, the entire scene, I was expecting Blackjack to stab Ahuizotl in the chest with her broken leg... So, when Ahuizotl called her out on the plan to record his confession, I was a little frightened, because I knew if he threatened her friends, Blackjack would have gladly put the slave collar on. And then surprise broadcaster. Even though I knew very well that Blackjack's pipbuck could do that, it still took me by surprise, and I loved it.
Does that mean Blackjack is a more clever pony than I am? That's... a little scary.
"Now... hey. Listen. I can explain. I'm... ah... being blackmailed. Zebras made me say all that shit. Cause they got my... my... ah..." "Ah shit. Fine. Ya got me." - Okay, I did laugh at this, quite loudly.
Definitely a sweet way to see that bastard off. I love energy weapon crits.
"I looked over at Psychoshy's bed, hearing her groans. She really had to be hurt worse than I thought" - Show of hooves, who /actually/ thought Psychoshy /wasn't/ having sex?
Lots of sex... well okay then Shy. I have to say though, it was a nice bit of levity to contrast with just how much it hurt for Blackjack trying to apologize to Boing.
While it's sad for the party to be splitting up, it's nice that Silver Spoon and Snails will get to have Carrion and Xanthe to accompany them (and indeed, if they never get to play a prominent role again in PH, their exploits would make for an interesting side story). Blackjack doing the "Bump! Bump! Sugar lump rump!" is so adorable, especially since she's not dieing of radiation this time.
It's too bad Cerebrus couldn't go with them too... Completely unreasonable, but it would have been awesome, heh.
Dat kiss. Poor Blackjack, suffering for our amusement...
Ah, and now to the big scene... I'm not going to say much, since it has already been talked about literally to the point where I almost couldn't enjoy it.
But I thought it was a perfectly fine scene. I actually hadn't cried yet this chapter (which I attribute to simply being too terrified by Hell to actually cry over) until "Goodbye, Psychoshy." "Not Psychoshy. Whisper." - I thought it was really quite touching.
Also "STOP THOU CUNT THOU!" is hilarious.
For just a moment, my heart stopped at "Hey, this isn't Chapel!"
In a way, it's really nice that Riverside is doing so well, but at the same time, "Lots of these folks are from outside Hoofington." fills me with dread.
It is really nice to finally see something Blackjack had done pay out in a thoroughly positive way.
It's nice to the old pervert too, even with the tinge of sadness from him recognizing Silver Stripe's parts.
"Doctor Blackjack" "I'd probably kill whoever I tried to heal. Gunshot wound? Amputation! Broken leg? Gunshot!" - Blackjack would be the greatest doctor ever, aside from Rampage. Prescription of whiskey for everypony!
Their talk is a very nice piece as well, and of course I loved the list of everything that's happened to Blackjack. Her lists always hit me pretty hard.
"Hardly ever hear them say 'Dear Luna' or something." - I say "Sweet Luna" all the time.
"Offering too damn much, honestly. Anypony you should be worried about isn't taking them seriously. Yet. Besides, the Zodiacs flat told them no." - This is actually surprisingly really relieving, and YAY Zodiacs!
So Dealer really isn't Goldenblood or Horse, that's something nice to have cleared up. Very very interesting stuff about EC-1101... so much mystery. In all, the talk with the Dealer is great too, two very strong scenes back-to-back. The ending is great too. Poor Blackjack, she's never going to have very many caps is she?
Okay, I /still/ hold a grudge against Hell Hounds, and I never cared all that much for the Diamond Dogs in the show but... there's just something about Rover's interaction with Blackjack here that... is so adorable...
The picture from today's drawfriend probably didn't help either...
An interesting dream that raises a lot more questions than it answers, especially after Blackjack's discussion with the Dealer.
Hah, blood testing reminds me of the changeling infiltration from Deep Space 9... what an old memory to dredge up.
There's definitely something being set up, especially with Psalm being allowed to listen in on the conversation between Celestia and Luna... this whole thing just tastes like one big conspiracy pudding. Don't ask what that actually tastes like.
"La la la la la la... not listening to Blackjack talking about things in her hiney." - Oh Goddesses, Lacunae is so adorable.
Oh hey, and it's that previously mentioned Hell Hound... which is terrifying. I can't blame Blackjack for reacting the way she did... and it's kinda more terrifying she couldn't kill it, and that exploding half his face didn't even slow him down.
"Dogs hope Security could help hounds too. Not shoot hound just because hound is scary!" - Warning next time, Rover. Or you know... don't let the giant scary hound in around a pony you've got paralyzed.
Poor Blackjack, more being embarrassed for our entertainment...
And isn't that great, there will probably be mind-controlled Hell Hounds at Shadowbolt Tower. Are you relieved by that? I sure am.
"Just one question, though, Rover: Why do you keep talking like that?!" - See! See! They're being cute! Why? How is that even possible?
"Do what Blackjack does. Find the most dangerous place in the Wasteland and charge right in. Get shot up and so caught up in fighting for your life that you can avoid thinking about things." "I don't... I... okay, I'm trying to do that less." - I think Lacunae being adorable is really the only thing that cuts down just how painful it is to see Rampage in her current condition.
At least Rampage can still laugh a little... about monster dog penises. That's a good thing.
"I wonder where Glory can get another one of those..." - Oh Goddesses poor Lacunae, she's so adorable when she's embarrassed like that. So very adorable.
Finally back in Chapel! And Sekashi is okay, and being as adorably zebra as ever.
I'll admit it, I cried buckets at Boo and Blackjack being reunited. It was just so nice to see her again, and the whole thing was just so adorably sweet.
Seeing P-21 and Scotch up and... well up and okay as they possibly could be was really great too, particularly the way Scotch called out to him as "Daddy". I am still a bit worried about both of them though. And it would be really nice to see Scotch help fix up Chapel and turn it into a real living town...
Another show of hooves, who didn't think Glory was asking about Blackjack's health just so she could wallop her without feeling bad?
Yeah, that went just about as well as I thought it might. Next chapter is going to be one hell of a ride.
"But the gift didn't matter if it wasn't what they wanted or from who they wanted it from." - Just something I was wondering about, should one of the "from" be removed here? I'm not much of an editor but it just stood out a little in re-reading, so I figured I'd ask.
- 6 pony party reduced to 5:
- Obviously Lacunae and Rampage are coming along. Sure Rampage has problems, but not going with Blackjack will not do anything to help them. I have every confidence in Blackjack and Glory being able to work things out... it may involve a lot of pain, and it may take half or more of chapter 50, but I don't think Glory will be staying behind either. So who get's the 5th spot? Boo. Obviously.
Pfff... closing this tag I almost typed /cake instead of /spoiler...

Bah playing a spy disguising yourself as a spy is some of the greatest cerebral gaming ever. Looking forward to Mann VS Machine this evening as I've not touched TF2 in.. six months now. You don't have to worry about that Ryx. I like seeing your thoughts, even if they take time to get together. Boo won't officially be a party member until the 5th arc. But she will still be involved along. But no, when I talk about the main six leaving, I mean for good. It'll still be a while before we find out who though. A couple of chapters at least. Hopefully I'll be able to pull it off better than Steelhooves tho...

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Just downloaded TF2 today and began to play it.
My favourite class is definitely sniper. I pop heads like a beast while sniping.
On the console it was heavy, but I dunno, doesn't quite work out for me now.
I was top of my teams leaderboard for quite some time, too, despite going through most of the other classes and failing horribly.
Spies are fucking annoying though. I see why people say they're the noobie class of the game.

I forget if I asked this before but Somber: it'd be cool to see how you keep your notes and thoughts together for your writing (ie your tools and whatnot). It must be tricky at times for such a long story! Do you (if you'd like) have some spoiler free notes from old stuff you can post or scan to provide some insight?
Half of my enjoyment of literature comes from the author's thought process so this stuff is nifty to me. For instance when I write dialogue in fiction I use a mirror and say stuff aloud and monitor my facial expressions and reactions to make realistic description and so on.
Oh shit I'm late to a meeting with my editor. fuckckkkkkkk

I play every class except Spy, and my favorites are in this order: Heavy, Sniper, Engineer, Scout, Medic, Pyro, Demoman, Soldier. When I do use Spy, I don't backstab. I use the Enforcer.Kippershy wrote:Just downloaded TF2 today and began to play it.

No specific servers other than a modded Vs. Saxton Hale server. The Pony-themed randomizer server seems to have disappeared. So no base game ones.tylertoon2 wrote:ketchup504 wrote:I play every class except Spy, and my favorites are in this order: Heavy, Sniper, Engineer, Scout, Medic, Pyro, Demoman, Soldier. I've heard the writing improves 4th chapter onwardsswicked wrote:No offense, but how long does it take for the fic to pick up?stringtheory wrote:plug for FO:E New Roam over on FiMfiction, this is the first FO:E fic I've seen which goes into the Zebra side of the war and it does so very well, there's a lot less raiders in Zebra territory, but the extremely dangerous wildlife and organized Legion, who might as well be pre-apocalypse for the level of stuff they have (they need it to battle the wildlife), make up for the low amount of raiders
the character's are awesome, with the main character having a strong sense of 'duty' and taking the danger away from others because it was his plan and no one else should get hurt, while the companions are all awesome, and I'm looking forwards to the future interaction between them
it's already almost 180,000 words long with only 11 chapters, which is very impressive
The narrator appears to have ADHD and I'm having trouble taking him seriously :P

Well that changes things totally...
If we mean dead/injured beyond adventuring/settling down... I have to change my vote.
Rampage is the one whose story is really over. She found out who and what she is. The only thing left is for her to find a new cause, a new reason to live - or to die, finally and truly.
It's gotta be Rampage.

Time to stop punching walls about the old reply going down the toilet and throw a pale imitation out there.
And going extremely light on Cerberus means a whole lot of wiggle room... which is, frankly, intimidating. And I keep hearing mention of Dise as some excellent reference, but hasn't it already been established as a location? I'm sure we've heard it before.
START SPECULATING.
And if I may speak personally? Obviously I don't represent all of your readers here, but I appreciate these minimalistic previews. They never really spoil to a degree that ruins the story (for me) and they are always interesting and renew my fascination with the plot of Project Horizons. I'd be put out if you stopped.
Uh... yeah.
If this happens... may we see? This would be fascinating.
Yeh sure.
For the second time in a day Carrion leaves me awkwardly avoiding the question of why I was laughing so much. A vote isn't enough- Where is swicked's donate button?
- Spoiler:
- I don't like explaining death in a particular setting. I just don't. There is only a single author on this green earth that I would trust to write a less-than-biguous scene about the disembodied experience. Fortunately, that author is writing Project Horizons. Still there is something in particular about her experience that does not sing to me as most of this story does, and it has nothing to do with my prejudice against clarified death: The vaguely rapey green lightning. For the very first time in what has been the longest story I've ever read I find myself saying, "I don't understand." I have never felt like Blackjack's pain was just writing on a page. I have to check myself to make sure I am unharmed, remind myself that I was not actually there suffering myself. But this empathy stops at the vague violation of soul-searing... whatever that was. It may just be something that cannot be explained or I'm just a victim to my own occasional obliviousness, but this is the first time I couldn't feel anything from one of Blackjack's more harrowing experiences.
On a more positive note: Carrion. I had to stop everything for two minutes while I picked pieces of myself off the floor. That was hilarious.
And the controversial scene... why so much focus on the Bat? Can't we get a little cheer for the other victor here? Whisper won. She's here to stay.
The changeling nod pulled a smile from me. Is the ban lifted? Will there be 'lings? And if so, will they be subscribed to the 'Hive Mind' theory? I hope not. Not to sound as if I am trying to sway the Author, but there are more options available to make them heart wrenchingly tragic monsters if they're all individuals! Say 'Yes' to changeling personality!
Hey Rover, Hey Rover, we call Rover over. I love anything with this guy. It isn't the history I was hoping for, but it is interesting nonetheless and confirms a bit of headcanon for me- the most important resource is not dogs, but willing, skilled workers. I'm willing to bet that Rover only ever knew another two diamond dogs willing and able to push for their species... and they are obviously no longer available. ...Anyone else remember when we got to ask PH characters questions? Because... I have one or two for Rover...
Broke out laughing at Gnarr's final comment. And it sort of makes sense. We don't have any evidence that Pleasant Valley Dogs live forever, but Sand Dogs obviously have an extended lifespan. If valley dogs have generation gaps while sand dogs don't... then sand dogs don't really have an opportunity to lose the accent.
Almost called it. Though I personally think they're missing an overenthusiastic robot.Meleagridis wrote:Don't be ridiculous now. They're all forming their own wasteland wandering team. Stygius leads. Whisper muscles. Cerberus offers advice and Carrion offers useful advice. The glowing one is the diplomat, snails works the magic mojo and...
Y'know, it's sounding less and less like a joke to me. But they're civilians, and civilians don't show that much interest in the wasteland wandering lifestyle. Except maybe Stygius and Psycho- I don't see them settling down.

Uh... yeah.
Caoimhe wrote:I forget if I asked this before but Somber: it'd be cool to see how you keep your notes and thoughts together for your writing (ie your tools and whatnot). It must be tricky at times for such a long story! Do you (if you'd like) have some spoiler free notes from old stuff you can post or scan to provide some insight?
If this happens... may we see? This would be fascinating.
tylertoon2 wrote:Hey once they release Mann vs Machine today anyone want to play a game of that?
Yeh sure.

Hm... Maybe the first "from" could be removed, but I don't think that it works properly without both of them. Sorry.WavemasterRyx wrote:"But the gift didn't matter if it wasn't what they wanted or from who they wanted it from." - Just something I was wondering about, should one of the "from" be removed here? I'm not much of an editor but it just stood out a little in re-reading, so I figured I'd ask.

I don't have notes, per ce. Okay... I don't have notes at all. I've tried! I've tried to jot down ideas and the like. I have a few notes on my wall, but most of them haven't been updated since chapter 33. So most of it is kept in my head. I kinda know what has to happen in each chapter. Like the next chapter has the resolution of glory, going over the things in Chapel, and then the twist and fight and stuff... And hopefully I pull it off well enough that my editors can make it worth reading.

There is absolutely no reason to ever believe my speculation lol. Out of 49 chapters I've only ever been right about thinking Rampage was Twist, and even then I was barely right.swicked wrote:I absolutely forgot Boo. Shame on me.

Well thank you, sir. I really do wish i could write up my commentaries faster though, since I know how important they are to you, and I wish I could do more to help you out with your living expenses... *hugs*Somber wrote:You don't have to worry about that Ryx. I like seeing
your thoughts, even if they take time to get together. Boo won't
officially be a party member until the 5th arc. But she will still be
involved along. But no, when I talk about the main six leaving, I mean
for good. It'll still be a while before we find out who though. A
couple of chapters at least. Hopefully I'll be able to pull it off
better than Steelhooves tho...
As for the party well... I suppose it is inevitable to lose someone from the main party. Hoofington is a dangerous place, and we've been lucky to keep them all together and alive for as long as they have been.
I have every confidence you'll be able to pull it off just fine, sir. Just don't expect me not to cry, heh.
And... I know I've said it before, but please don't let how much I (or anyone else) have grown attached to Boo (or any other character) influence how you decide to write the story... No matter what happens, I'll still love your characters, and I'll keep them all alive in my heart.

- *shrugs* Admittedly, it's been a long time since my last writing class, and my teachers were mostly incompetent. To me it still seems weird, but I trust in your guys' judgement.
