It's a day that people here in america attribute to marijuana. And it's supposed to be funny because he's from Colorado, where marijuana is now legal. Specifically Boulder, which is basically the stoner capital of the universe.Kattlarv wrote:@Robo: 4.20? I don't get it...

Hey Camo, last night Robo was asking about that token you were using for Proffesor Palm. Mind linking the picture?

I don't watch everything that Thatguywiththeglasses puts out, but I do keep up with JO and her anime stuff. Smart girl but suffers from trying to do too much at once.

She's stopped doing the Derby stuff, she'll just be doing more free form reviews one show at a time. I know, but it sucks she decided to cut her old intro style. I understand why though. Personally I want her to continue her Inbetween show over Trigun but its been years since the last one. Same for digimon but that became like Linkara's Power Rangers overview. They come out when they come out haha.

Well, I was thinking about a genre of horror that would happen in a very mundane, everyday setting, but which due to the events happening in that setting take a turn into horror.OneMoreDaySK wrote:Re: Horror films
Do postapocalyptic films count? Even stories with supernatural, i.e. zombies, has more horror due to part of other humans (DayZ 'trailer' by CorridorDigital).
The most likely way to do this would be using serial-killers, with the horror part being the victims part of the killer's game (basically, SAW).
I sorta had this idea
- Spoiler:
- of a club for rich people, where they capture homeless people, runaway kids, junkies and other people that no one will miss; and commit on them acts of unspeakable barbary. With the horrifying part being the implication that these rich people, who pay to commit these atrocities, aren't "monsters", they aren't psychopaths or sociopaths, they are just people with loose moral and the means to back they most perverted desires, who do it for the thrill of knowing what it feels like.
Include a scene with some sort of perverted human petting zoo...
Of course, the protagonists would be some of these victims who would fight not to be killed-off, most of them trying just to escape and survive, but a few of them just aiming for revenge even if it means dying in the process.

I think this movie already exists. It's called Hostel if I remember correctly. Not a particularly good movie.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Yeah, Saw's a good example of this; only issue is that the movies after the first two really go downhill really fast. Funny Games doesn't have anything supernatural in it, but it also doesn't have a fourth wall. Silence of the Lambs is a classic (the Hannibal TV show is similar, though some episodes are less horror than others). Session 9 is... complicated, but very good. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a good film (the original) but it's got hillbillies so inbred that they might as well be supernatural. Lots of slasher films are supernatural, surprisingly, even the ones that aren’t billed that way – slasher movie villains take unbelievable amounts of abuse and can apparently teleport (also, slasher movie victims – AKA “protagonists” – are preternaturally stupid). Let’s see… the August Underground series of films is realism-based (I’ve only seen the second) but they’re A) atrocious in terms of being an atrocity, B) stomach-churning, and C) if not illegal in various countries, certainly illegal-looking. Hitchcock's Psycho and The Birds are both good - the latter could be technically paranormal (it's certainly strange) but also might not be, and it's a really, really good movie (as is Psycho, of course, but The Birds IMO basically lays down what a horror movie should try to do from the middle to the end). Alien/Aliens are scifi-horror, technically not supernatural. Night of the Hunter is a classic (you will probably recognize lots of stuff in it from references people make to it). Diabolique was an enjoyable movie (original version). Shiver is pretty good, weak second half but I remember enjoying it.Harmony Ltd. wrote:Yo Cobalt,
I know you're our resident expert on the horror movie genre so I have a question:
What horror movies do you know that feature absolutely no paranormal or supernatural elements, where the only enemy of man is man itself?
At a guess, I'm thinking about the SAW series of movies, and other "serial killer" movies.
EDIT: Also yes Hostel exists. It's... well, I watched the unrated version, and it WAS very gory, so I can say that for it. And it works, in a lot of ways; the first and second halves of the film, while wildly different in tone, complement one another quite well. But it's not plot or character driven, frankly. Things just happen, and they're shocking sometimes.

Yeah. I'm not a fan of horror, to be honest with y'all.
I just wanted a movie where the theme isn't "fear the sub-humans" but "fuck the rich who eat the poors".

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Hostel, any variation of "The Most Dangerous Game" played straight. Continuing on Man vs man horror, there was Fear which if memory serves was about a family who's teenage daughter gets involved with a super obsessive guy and the climax is the guy and his group of friends assaulting the house to get to her. Newer movies include The Purge, which I didn't hear was any good, You're Next, which I did hear was good with a good twist. And The Strangers as well, somewhat based off the Charles Manson killings.
The original Friday the 13th was about Jason's mom killing the teenagers trying to start Camp Crystal lake back up( I think that was the plot of the first movie) out of revenge of her son's death. The whole unstoppable killer Jason thing didn't pop up till the second film, and I think the third movie it was only some guy dressed as Jason to get away with killing.
There's Last House on the Left, original and remake which is a group of assholes attempt to kill a girl and her parents find out and get revenge.
There's plenty of regular horror films that's just humans killing other humans without supernatural or super science involved, but as far as people with loose morals and the cash to spend on killing random people, Hostel is the closest you want Harmony. And only if by "loose morals" you mean sick fucks.

Oh god the Purge. That was a fantastic work of crap. I like how they put everyone in masks so they could skip the acting part of the movie. I'd like it purged from my mind hue hue hue.
Its quite typical of western horror movies just to be about the gore. I enjoy those handheld camera style film, too bad Quarantine is the only decent one.
If you want something that was just stupidly and unnecessarily violent, look up The Serbian Film.

Can anyone guess what page I was on that linked to The Purge?
Not really a fan of horror, even less so gore. I can appreciate the work put into that genre, but as a whole, that genre terrifies me.
