So I got to watch space dandy.
QT's voice actor is the same as tachikoma from GITS. Also it doesn't take itself serious. It's like captain kirk meets Spike from cowboy bebop.
If you like only super cereal tv shows with blood and guts you're going to hate it. If you like pre-2000 anime shows with were tongue in cheek humor you may like it. The fan service in it is the tongue in cheek sort not actually mean to try to draw viewership, but more of a comic relief.

It's pretty good actually in that it recognizes the ideas of what makes a anime and intentionally derives it's storyline from that idea much in the way that shows like FLCL recognize that they're animes and give us both what we want and satirize that.Katarn wrote:Become intrigued, went on youtube and watched trailer...dafuq did I just watched? o.O
Basically imagine cowboy bebop + FLCL + serious drugs = space dandy.

@Iron
Power metal's never really been my thing, but if you like Iced Earth, I've got some news you might be interested in. Though apparently you'll need spotify, apparently you can stream their new album for free right now.

I've actually already listened to their newest album on spotify. I intend to go through more of their stuff.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
It's probably-shitty-sequel night tonight! First up is V/H/S/2, or S-V/H/S or whatever, and then Insidious 2. Occasional running commentary commences.
- S-V/H/S:
-The beginning of the stitching story is okay. Nice feeling of reality to it, even if it's a bit dull. Predictable spookiness.
-First short was unimpressive. Bad acting, took no risks... I've seen better horror shorts on YouTube from amateurs. Shies away from showing scenes that were done over 80 years ago IIRC. No internal consistency, feels very fake. Might have been intended to be fake within the reality of the movie.
-Second interstitial bit is short, gives a tiny bit of a hint of overarching plot. Liked this bit.
-Second short begins with stupid, bad acting. Nice concept, though, helmet cam footage of a biker that gets bit by a zombie. Gorier, and also actually really funny by the halfway point. I'm okay with this one. Breaks the "reality" of the found footage, though, with blatant editing of other cameras. Again, might be intended for the reality of the film. Has some clever cinematography. Bit too... put-together, if that makes sense. Too much of a narrative and arc.
-Third interstitial. Character is trancing out, having a migraine maybe. Bleeding from the nose, etc. Still predictable, but at least it's decent.
-Third short. Definitely edited together one, has subtitles. Group wants to do a film on a cult of some kind. Indonesia, I think? Anyway, foreign language disguises any poor acting that may or may not be happening, at least for normal dialogue. Writing's okay so far, too. Lots of respect for the medium in this one thus far, incorporation of little filmmaking errors to make it feel more real. Uh-oh, social drama begins. Oy. Still, this one's shaping up to be the best so far. Spooky imagery, great slow tension. Oh, and the payoff is great, too. Wait, did I say great? I meant perfect. Far and away the best one so far. Devotion to realism gives way to surreal hellscape. It's not perfect, and it's not scary, but it's damn good horror. Exactly what I want from this kind of stuff. Unmitigated, unexplained weirdness. If there's logic, it's demented, dream-logic at best. Effects are serviceable, but they're not CGI (where it counts) and I love them for that.
-Fourth interstitial. Migraine-suffering watcher has collapsed. Now the other guy's gonna watch videos. Okay.
-Fourth short! Doggy-cam? Okay. Best described thus far as Home Alone: the R-Rated Edition. With lake monster... aliens... or something. It's pretty well put together, overall. Rubber suits and stuff, but still not bad. Tense. Devoted to the medium, but the monsters were kinda dumb.
-Fifth interstitial begins very promisingly. Ending's pretty great, too. Nothing explained, it just happens. I liked it.
Overall thoughts: Meh. It had some great moments, and is worth a watch if you like YouTube horror shorts punted back into the VHS era, but it only hints at the level of gritty bleakness that was the first one. V/H/S was Mordum-lite; S-V/H/S was Blair Witch Project-heavy. I'd like it if this style of horror film caught on, because I do enjoy it, and I really enjoyed the Indonesian horror short in here, but overall it felt less interesting than the first, and its weak start (especially compared to the degenerate brilliance of the first one's opening) and fewer original story concepts made me kind of ambivalent about this horror anthology as a whole. I mean, seriously... spooky ghosts and zombies? You have a vague mythology that says there are dark, inexplicable and dangerous things in the shadowy and seedy parts of the world, which certain warped individuals collect videos of as they go off the deep end, and you do... spooky ghosts and zombies. Even the weaker shorts of the first one were more original than that! You had a plain old murder to shake things up a bit, you had a slasher villain with an "ugly" effect for the human mind (William Gibson's term - it renders his features incompatible with the brain, basically)... They tried for cleverness, and even if the film didn't succeed sometimes, it had oodles of atmosphere. While the moments of brevity in the sequel make it more watchable than the first (as does the shorter running time), it weakens it as an overall film, I think - some of that atmosphere is lost.
- Insidious 2:
I have very low hopes for this film. I liked the first one quite a bit, so naturally I am suspicious of unnecessary cash-grab sequels. Furthermore, the original was brilliant because of how slow it went with the buildup. The stuff that happened once things were revealed was not all that impressive, and this film is working off the same mythos. They can't un-reveal things. Still, we'll see.
Probably only going to give the overall thoughts of this one, because it's not divided so nicely into parts like S-V/H/S was.
-Nope, going to live-review this. Oh, god, how long are they going to make us pretend we haven't seen the end of the first film. "Is he possessed or not?!???!!!" Yes. He is. We saw it happen. I mean, I'm not sure if there'd even be any question if I hadn't seen the first film, it's pretty obvious. "Don't talk about ghosts, they're too spooky for muh family! Never mind that we all literally saw a shitton of ghosts like a week ago. Don't talk about it, my family will get spooped."
-Oh, good, only half an hour in before it's re-revealed... at least to the audience. Oy.
-Oh, good, time travel. Well, at least it's something novel.
-I think this was filmed in the same set as The Conjuring, but with different wallpaper.
-What. Now they're cribbing from N0S4A2. Or, well, whatever that got the letter tiles from. I guess it's really just an updated ouija board. No penalty for the scene.
-Apparently, it was "Take Your Filthy Kid to Work at the ICU Day!"
-Okay, shades of Psycho now. Aaaand we're using the Evil Unnatural Transsexual now, too? Wow. Well, we'll see, but that's what it looks like. Oooh, gender ambiguity, scaaary.
-Good dream sequence, though. Reasonably scary.
-Okay, so the spooky ghost from Insidious is not just a spooky ghost, it's the spooky ghost of a genderqueer serial killer with mommy issues. :| Stop trying to up the ante, Jaysus, and stop trying to weird out the audience with crossdressing. Last time had a literal demon - the spooky ghost in the black dress was supposed to be just a normal, nasty ghost, an insidious being clawing back into our world because the other side is hellish. Trying to turn it into a slasher villain is just so hammy, and trying to weird out the audience by putting a boy in a dress is insulting to your audience's intelligence.
-And it's an evil mother ghost behind it all. Okay.
-I swear to god if you give me a happy ending... Well, happy ending. I mean still a spooky ending, but a happy one for the main characters. Meh.
Overall thoughts: :| Not very good. More supernatural thriller than horror, like one of the bad Stephen King books' endings dragged on for an entire film. It had some moments, it did, but it also made me wonder if the first film's good parts were accidental. That is something to avoid when making a sequel, I should think. I will say that the violence was choreographed well. It felt like it was heavy and impacting. Other than that, though, it didn't learn any new tricks, and actually forgot a few since last time. Not a fan.
