I just had a random realization when reading the news, and that is the best way to tell if things are looking up in the world be it financially or politically is when the 24/7 news' headlines are stuff that happens in singular towns and have no real influence on the country as a whole.  By that I just realized that for all the doom saying the news does it's actually pretty easy to tell when your country is okay.  All you have to do is click on the page, read the top headline, and if it's not important to the country as a whole then things are okay actually and they're just ambulance chasing to get a news story they can stick on the top headline.

It's a good way if you're just not interested in the enough to dig for actual news stories or just don't have the time.
