What I mean is, for a flyer, the best protection is agility and speed, being always in movement and able to dodge shots rather than to take them.
Too much armor would come in direct conflict with that.
Most likely, the frontliners have even less armor, if any, and rely primarily on maneuvers for their own protection.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
The Royal Guard, being glorified bodyguards tasked to protect VIPs, do not have the leisure of being as mobile as normal soldiers (having to primarily protect people which may be less mobile than themselves).
As such, they trade their speed and agility for more protection. Thus the armor. But even then, they stay primarily fliers, which force their armor to still be light. Which is why they concentrate protection on the front side - like real-life tanks, which concentrate their armors toward the front, where attacks are most likely to come from.

As an aside, if you look under the cockpit of this helicopter, you'll see they grafted a protection plate to protect the crew from light arms fire coming from the ground. I find that concept interesting.

This is more protection? The legs are completely uncovered, as is the face, most of the throat, and most of the rear. It's little more than useless and ceremonial. Just like the Royal Guard itself

No, I was talking about the griffin royal guard that was referred to by the artist.
Contrasting with griffin frontliners who may have little to no armor at all.

Now, if you had Kevlar and other bullet-resistant "textiles" available, I could see sets of armors being light enough to not hinder agility and speed much while offering a greater degree of protection.
You could even imagine adding ceramic plates to the front body armor.

Of course, the default tech level for the setting is supposed to be medieval, but most fan-artists and writers tend to gloss over this so their OC's can be self-inserts in one way or another. Only tangentially relevant to the current conversation, but it irks me regardless

Yes. I agree with you on that point.
It doesn't help that the tech-level displayed by the show itself tend to be schizophrenic to a high degree at times.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Faust's official stance was to keep things medieval, unless absolutely required by the story. However, most writers since then have just kind of ignored that, but most writers since then have had other problems on top of that. (Like making Shining and Cadence, two characters that wouldn't be out of place in amateur Sue fic)

Yes, I was in fact thinking about Vinyl's DJ setup in "A Canterlot Wedding" as an example of high technology displayed in the show.
Twilight's scientific instruments don't really count given they are obviously as much magical as they are "technological" in nature.

The coal engine sort of counts, but it's not as egregious as the turntables

Well, the most "realistic" way to look at it is like they do in the Lunaverse, which is to say to view Equestria as a having a technological level generally around the mid-19th century, with Ponyville being kind of backward.

And just assume more advanced things (turntables) are magitek?
I really ought to take another look at the Lunaverse. I've read Boast Busted, but all it accomplished was cementing my distaste for Twilight

In the main show, I really can't stand how much everyone refers to Twilight as a 'genius', for one--she's not. She can't think for herself or be creative or solve problems, just regurgitate what the Princess tells her or what she reads in books
Plus, she has massive anger and anxiety issues, which are extremely annoying to watch her deal with--90% of the show's conflicts would be solved if she just calmed the fuck down

You know, people tend to focus too much Chick Tracts' hilariously racist, homophobic and legalistic messages. I think people need to step back and remember....
