Holy shit.
Just heard that the store manager of where I work has been found dead.
There was a rumour going around the other day that he was going to lose his job, though I don't know why. I just heard that we were getting someone who used to work with us before moving to another store (same chain) in a promotion move and is moving back to our one to take over.
Now Richard has apparently been found dead. Coincidence? Probably not.
...Damn. He had a wife & child, though the child is actually a tiny bit older than me I think, but damn.

Did you hear the rumor while the guy was still alive, or is it just now that he's been confirmed dead that you've heard it ?
Anyway, sucks for his family. And for him, also.
If the cause of death is suicide then that's pretty tragic.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I heard the rumour that he was losing his job two days ago.
He's been missing from work for the last week, though I think that was a week suspension as standard procedure while they organise the meeting to "decide" what to do about things.
Indeed, it is pretty tragic. I know where he would've been coming from, if it was the reason - and it seems like it would be.
He was always a happy enough guy. Sure he could get annoyed at times when things didn't go right, but he definitely didn't ever show the classic signs of depression.

So, it's different to what I'd thought.
Just rang my boss because I noticed there was a miss-call earlier, he asked what I knew about it all.
He is indeed dead. No rumour, no "I heard he's been found." He's dead.
In the online papers and everything.
Police aren't treating it as suspicious though I personally still think there's a chance that it could have been a last second "accident" on the way up north to the meeting where his job's fate would have been decided.
Is it strange that this isn't really affecting me that much? My boss was worried about me because of it, but aside from the "wow, oh shit" factor you get when you first hear it, I've not really had anything plaguing me or anything like that.
Sad to hear someone's dead, but not damaging to me personally.
Anyway, I know none of this is important to any of you, but I wanted to say it anyway because of my earlier post.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
We discussed super-capacitors with a specialist in battery technologies in one of our classes.
They are amazing. The problem is where a battery can store a given amount of energy for, say, 8 weeks before having lost half of its charge because of internal reactions, super-capacitors would be happy if they managed to lose only half of their energy in a 48 hours timespan.
What this mean is that, on one hand you can store huge amounts of energy in a very short timespan ; but on the other hand if you don't quickly use the energy that has been stored your energy will just -poof- : vanish.
Also of not, pound for pound, today's supercapacitors store only a tenth of the energy contained in a lithium-ion battery, for ten to fifty times the price. Though this could be different with graphene, I don't know...
On the other en of the spectrum, using electricity to produce hydrogen, and then using the hydrogen to produce electricity isn't the most efficient mean of storing energy (at the end of the cycle electricity-to-electricity, roughly half of the energy will have been lost), but you can store hydrogen in tanks for literally years with minimum losses with current technologies.
So I could imagine that combining both Graphene Supercapacitors and Hydrogen Energy Storage systems, along with other complementary technologies could lead to a more efficient energy grid.

I don't want to rant, but I'll say that that's one thing that drive me up the fucking walls.People will leave the country to get degrees in France and the like as employers pay their way and import new talent.
Even if it is far from perfect (and can personally testify about that), we invest BILLIONS and BILLIONS of taxpayer money into our post-secondary educational system to educate our citizens ;
And because employers, with the State first among them, pay so little salary to workers, skilled or not, that those who can put themselves on the globalized world market and go to the highest bidder, out of the country.
And most of the time the highest bidder is the US.
God fucking damn, you'd have to make a study on that but I've a hunch that one of the reason why American hi-tech industry and scientific research sector perform so well is because of the number of non-american scientists and engineers working there.

But on the other hand you'd rather have thousands of poor fucks die crossing the mexican border than to pay the hundred million or so it'd take to give them three meals a day, courses in English and a trade formation to turn them into productive members of society.
And instead spend billions militarizing said border to stop them from going in and stealing yer jerb

Note that I apply this comment to my own country as well, I'm not bashing America proper but the attitude the People of developed countries have toward immigration in general.
And there's a thing politics riding an anti-immigration platform often ignore (willingly or not) : it's that the best way to fight immigration,
is to help the countries people are immigrating from to develop their own economy to reduce poverty.

I can't really speak for the scientific sectors, but in Canada, especially in my province, we apparently don't have enough doctors, and especially nurses, because it simply is more profitable to work in other provinces or the US.Harmony Ltd. wrote:

Somewhat related, my mother told me recently that going to university was much cheaper when she went.

I am always amazed at how immigrants can be among the firsts to fight against immigration and other immigrants.
@ Ketchup : There's more doctors from Burkina Faso working and living in France than there is in Burkina Faso. And we tend to "import" our nurses from Eastern Europe...

And we, on the other hand, have no textbooks at all most of the time.
We just got to pay a fee to the school at the beginning of the year to pay for photocopies and other "reprography rights".

Re American healthcare reform :
what gets me the most, is that Obama basically mandated people to buy private insurance.
Somehow, he managed to piss off BOTH Capitalists and Socialists :
- By forcing people to buy something against their will and desire, which goes against the very idea of a Free Market.
- And by surrendering Healthcare to private corporations.
Way to go, dude !
