The logic I was using for Cast's conversation with Cherry is that he is both being sincere and trying to protect her and Flower from the ravages of her own mind, not just from physical assault. He considers it an extension of his orders.
Not sure who picked up on that so I'm just throwing that out there.

And soon afterwards I started playing Fallout 3 again and found where it was based off of. I think that went something like. "Well, doesn't seem to be any Enclave here. Or anything for that matter. Still, I better be carefu... DEATHCLAWS!"

Right on, but Cast only applies this to what he feels is absolutely necessary. He will intentionally tell bad lies around friendlies so that they can figure whatever out without directly saying anything. I.e. the whole flight suit thing, he didn't want to get Shadow in trouble but couldn't outright lie.

Edit: I know this is a bit jumbled, but I hope it's understandable.

Iron, Cast shouldn't worry about that no matter what would of have happened, Shadow was in trouble. That's just how it works.
