Something strong like a minotaur. It could be used for area-denial in close combat.

To balance it for such a low level, you can only use it once per fight, to block 1 attack. And only melee attacks/unarmed attacks can be blocked.

Zhat vorks perfectly. It could be a lifesaver later on, even if limited to vone use.
And yes, hellhounds are mostly what I had in mind. Cast deploys the shield right when a hellhound swings, he drops the shield and caves in his ribs.

No Orm. They slice ranger armor like butter and I'm pretty sure their claws penetrate alicorn shields so I doubt his has any chance.

Yeah...shield won't do anything vs a Hellhound. If an alicorn can't block it, you sure as hell can't.
