The Petra Arc is a cancelled arc for the story The End of Ponies by shortskirtsandexplosions. The summary is in the link. Basically, some cataclysmic event has happened that makes the megaspells in FoE look like sparklers. The sun and moon are gone, and all of ponykind is dead, save for one pony who miraculously survives the event. (No, she is not an OC, but I'm not going to reveal her identity. It's a part of the initial storyline.) She spends her days in an airship, roaming the remains of the world, which is now a twilight wasteland filled with storms, moon debris, snow, and the ashes of dead ponies. She's basically trying to survive. Any of the other races that remain on the wastes hate her (since the ponies had control over the sun and the moon, so apparently it's their fault). However, she runs into an old acquaintance who offers her, in short, the ability to go back in time for short periods. This becomes a central point to the story, as they try to look to the past to see if they can find a way to undo the damage from the Cataclysm.

End of ponies is my favorite MLP fanfic. It is dark, epic in length, full of wonderful imagery and a well-built world and mythos, and gets philosophical and humorous at times. (Especially the latest arc. My god, that could be an awesome story on its own.)

The Petra Arc was supposed to be the latest release, and SS&E was working on it around the beginning of the year, then kept reworking and reworking it, never quite satisfied with the results. He posted his rough drafts and discussion in a Ponychan thread, and linked it in a blog post back in February. I never read it, considering I was always hopeful that the arc would eventually get posted, and I didn't want to have anything spoiled for me. Then Background Pony happened in April, got crazy popular, so he put work on EOP on hold until BP was finished, but still left the links up to the rough drafts. Background Pony finished in November, and SS&E decided he'll resume work on EOP when he returns from vacation this coming year.

I kinda forgot about the rough drafts until recently. The Petra Arc got cancelled and the next arc is instead going to coincide with Red Wings, an official side story that got written by some chum of SS&E's. Since the arc is getting cancelled, I figured I might as well download and read the drafts.

I kinda wanna beat SS&E over the head. I really think he could've posted these things as they are, but oh well. Thus far, I've found very little wrong with the chapters, save for a few minor grammatical hiccups, some organizational issues, and the FUCKING LENGTH. Seriously, I got two chapters read today while at work. The second one was 92 goddamn pages long. I need to do a wordcount on these things because my god they are long.

Anyways, I highly recommend you read End of Ponies, and maybe Red Wings. It's good. Really good.))

((Oh, and this arc mostly takes place in the Wasteland present rather than the past. Right now, she needs to acquire something from the ruins of Cloudsdale, which are currently occupied by the city of Petra, a goblin civilization. In addition the story arc bounces back into parts of the last pony's past, before the Cataclysm and in the days/weeks right after it happened.))

((Further crunching: total arc length: 263859. If he'd released it to the current story, wordcount would be 770317 words. And there'd still be at least 3 more arcs planned.

If he can maintain a similar update pace as he did with Background Pony once he resumes writing, we could see this catching up to PH.

Y'know, I just realized, it's been about a year to date since I first started reading this story, I had just finished FoE. Got into this, then started PH in early January. Interesting, that.))
