(( Well, here we go. Wrote up *gasp* Backstory for Kasai!? ))

Kasai jerked awake, quickly looking around to make sure none of the other members of the Imperial Council, sitting at the large rounded table with her at the head, had noticed. Unfortunatly, the wide room of ponies were looking at her, many trying to hide the look of skepticism on their faces. Everyone was looking at her, even the pictures of her ancestors in the stain glass windows seemed to stare down at her.
She cleared her throat, "Well, get on with it, Counseller. We don't have all day." Out of the corner of her eye she saw the minister of foreign relations rolling his eyes. Douche. Why did they even have a minister of foreign relations, it's not like they had any contact with the rest of the world.
"As you wish, Empress." The Counceller looked back down at his list and began to read, and immediatly Kasai felt the pressure of boredom come down upon her. This was not what a fifteen year old pony was supposed to be doing. She should be out with her friends or siblings, getting into mischeif and having fun. Not this bullshit.

A few hours later, Kasai was walking through her flower garden, admiring to cherry blossoms that had just started to grow on the tree. She was just leaning down to smell the new roses she had planted, when she felt a smack across her flank.
Blushing furiously, she stood straight up and turned around to find herself face to face with the young Captain of the Guard.
"Rikugun Taii (Translation: Captain)! Wh-what are you doing?"
The Captain chuckled lightly, "Just admiring a fine piece of flank, Kas."
She blushed again, "Ichi! I told you not to call me that in public!"
He simply laughed and gave her a quick peck on the lips. She looked at the ground, trying to hide her embarassment.
"Oh come on, Kas, there's no one around. Besides..." He leaned in to whisper, "...You didn't have any objections to me calling you that last night."
Kasai let out a 'eep!' of indignation, shoving him. "Ichi!" But this merely caused him to laugh again, "There's nothing dishonourable about being with a Rikugun Taii, Kas, I'm not sure why you try so hard to hide it."
"Because I'm Empress, Ichi! I need to keep an image, for the public!"
Ichirou replies by nuzzling her affectionately. Kasai could feel the sadness in it though, and felt guilty for being so adament on the matter. He truly did care for her, one of the few ponies around who actually gave two shits about her well-being, not because she was Empress, but because she was her.
Sharp pain erupted from Kasai's shoulder as it was pierced by a throwing dagger. Screaming in agony, she fell back, with Ichirou drew his sword with his magic and began looking around, frantically.
"Guards! The Empress' life is in danger!" He yelled, just in time for a hooded figure to jump out of the bushes, sprinting for Kasai.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion for Kasai. The assasin charged her, drawing a long curved sword from a sheath in the process. She opened her mouth to scream, but nothing came out, as her death came for her.
SHHHHCCCK!
Blood splattered all across her face, landing in her open mouth and burning as it splashed in her eyes.
Ichirou stood over her defensively, blood flowing down his body from the stab wound running straight through his throat.

Her father had left, off to sleep his liquor and sins away as his daughter lay sleepless and sobbing silently. The room around her seemed even darker than usual in the night, the light of the moon offering little comfort to the mare as she tried to pretend it had just been a nightmare.
Her entire body ached, both from the acts inflicted upon her and the sense of complete betrayal from the one who was supposed to protect her. He had been her father for goodness sake, the one zebra in the world who was supposed to give life and limb to defend her, to give her as good a life as he could. But instead he was the one who had made her more miserable than ever.
She had completely abandoned her mattress after he'd left her for the night, disgusted by the thought of ever laying on it again; afraid that he would do it again if she ever did.
The zebra risked turning her head back to the rest of her room, hesitant from fear that her father may be waiting for her on the hay. The room lay silent and empty, unmoving and surreal. Shayle's eyes drifted to the window, and thoughts of escaping, of leaving this hell of a life behind, galloped through her mind. She would never have to see Father again, she would never have to fear him doing anything to her.
She would never see Felix again.
She couldn't do that to him, not her little brother. If she did that, who would take care of him while Father was gone? Who would make sure he stayed safe? What if her father turned his aggression toward Felix?
She turned away from the window, no longer wishing to run. Instead, she rose to her hooves and trotted slowly toward the door, opening it as quietly as she could. Once it was open, she perked her ears toward her father's door, listening for any sign that he had woken. After a few seconds she was confident he was still passed out on his own mattress, held in sleep by the alcohol.
Shayle silently stalked to the next room, one with a poorly scribbled name etched into the door by her younger brother. The door came open effortlessly and without a sound, allowing the mare to see her brother still sleeping peacefully.
After closing the door behind her, the zebra carefully lowered herself onto her belly beside her brother. His rear leg jerked quickly in sleep, a remnant of his dreams, whatever they may be. A small smile was spread over his face as he lay still, still able to sleep happily.
Shayle already felt safer by him, like nothing in the world could touch her or him as long as they were together. With new found confidence, the mare curled herself beside Felix and sighed. Her cheeks still burned from the tears which had matted them for hours since the events of her night had finished, but despite that discomfort, she managed to find sleep.
She didn't even notice her flank was painted with a new embellishment; a large swirl with a single jagged crack splitting it in two.
