Chrysalis is a good strategist but horrible with execution. Seriously, she had Canterlot and her enemies at her mercy and what does she do? She turns her back on them, begins singing, and gives them the time to activate an instant win spell.

Why? The only one that caught her in it was Twilight and she had a discrepancy plan of locking anyone that could stop her in those crystal caverns.
Even then, the invasion proceeded as scheduled following a test of strength against Celestia that she fairly easily surpassed.

I really think her only mistake was leaving Cadence in a position where there was an even remote chance of her showing up to save the day. Cocooning her like she did Celestia and hiding her somewhere much further out of the way would have been smart.

True, true, but even pretending to be nice like Cadence would have gone a long way to stop Twilight's suspicion.

Also, villains in FiM are so powerful and undefeatable that they are REQUIRED to mess up.
