Call me weird, but violence in something just doesn't attract my attention at all. You could sit me down in front of a movie or something that everyone says is awesome cause of how much fighting there is in it, but I'm going to be sitting off to the side bored out of my mind.stringtheory wrote:Well the fighting is at D&D level (swords, spells, and bows), in fact the author admits the magic system is a blatantly ripped from D&D. Yeah, I'd recommend going back and reading at least through chapter 3, all the main themes of the series show up in those three chapters: OCs, fighting/grimdark, and worldbuilding. If you stop reading at that point, I can't really fault you for it because its pretty much rinse and repeat at that point. Also the story is canon with season 2 (but not season 3), just so you know.
I'll definitely go back to it, then. Fighting is mostly what attracts my attention in stories (same with movies), but world building is just as good if not better. Hell, it might even give me a few ideas for my own work.

For me the violence has to have a point, violence for the sake of violence gets old fast.cb5 wrote:Call me weird, but violence in something just doesn't attract my attention at all. I agree with that. Explosions, gunfire, and light shows do catch and hold my attention, but if there's no valid reason for it to be happening then I can't focus on it. My brain will just faff about until something else comes along.

@DnD Magic System
This itself, of course, was ripped from Jack Vance's Dying Earth books. =P They have a lot of references to them in their, too, like Ioun stones, and I'm pretty sure Prismatic Spray was an actual spell in the stories, too.

One of my friends is a big fan of it, I know, but beyond that I haven't much familiarity with the game.

I was disappointed. After reading the description I was, for some reason, expecting a much better starfighter-sim; something like Freespace. It's not, of course.

Gonna need more than a 5.56. I recommend either lots of them, or switching to at least a .30 cal. Of course, my preference is the 8mm Mauser, but I believe you have a certain love for the 7.62x54R, no?

Indeedly-dee, I do. The Mosin'll do anything you need it to do, is nearly unbreakable, and is damn cheap to boot. They're a bit pricier, but I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a Dragunov (or clone thereof) at some point in the relatively near futureStoneSlinger88 wrote:Gonna need more than a 5.56. Those are actually pretty fun to shoot. A buddy of mine had one, or well a Polish version of one.

@Fave Artists
Hmm, well, I really like Beksinski's stuff, and Giger's, both for the same reasons. Creepy looking stuff. Beyond that, well, I don't know, really - I like art and that, but I don't have names in my head of artists I really like.

I thought they stopped importing them. For sixty bucks I slapped an AIM scope on the Mosin, and turns out the bugger is sub-MOA.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I finally got around to listening to Strapping Young Lad, and I must say that I love their work. From what I've seen so far (my research is somewhat lacking), a lot of bands who implement that level of heaviness into their music use subjects that disturb me (some occult stuff) or lack depth for their lyrics. That's why I like Fear Factory so much; they usually use Sci-Fi in their lyrics, and some of their albums even tell stories. Relatable stuff, and it has got that thundering metal sound that I love so much.

@Iron
Ah, SYL. Great band, shame Devin Townsend apparently can't write for it anymore (he has to go off his meds, which is a no-no now that he has a family - it might come back if he finds himself writing really heavy stuff again with no outlet, but until that happens the band's dead). A lot of their stuff is done to be funny; don't take songs like Shitstorm or You Suck too seriously. =P Anyway, a lot of the heaviness you're hearing from them comes from the production, the wall of sound stuff.
As for lyrical content, most of the bands using disturbing imagery in their lyrics are doing it just for atmosphere and suchlike (though frankly I think pornogrind and goregrind and most brutal death metal is just in bad taste). The exception to this is black metal. Plenty of that lot are actually a bit more into that stuff, like Satanism, pagan revivals, nihilism, at least as a means to an end beyond theatrics. Obviously there's still some image stuff, but there's also often ideology mixed in, too. It's a lot less insane than it used to be, of course, back in Norway. Anyway, point is, if you like concept albums, you might check out Ziltoid the Omniscient - it's one of Devin Townsend's post-SYL projects, and it's pretty good and also pretty funny.

Thanks, I'll give Ziltoid a listen when I get a chance. As for the lyrical stuff, that fact the occult stuff is mostly for theatrics opens up many bands for me, which I'm of course quite happy about. Also, when I heard "You Suck", I couldn't help but laugh. I could imagine that song being played as background music for an internet fight to emphasize the sheer absurdity.
EDIT: I just realized that I had only paid attention to part of the lyrics for "Oh My God". So, neeeeeeeyope.

I did. Its pretty much Katawa Shoujo but lacks its charm.

I just started checking it out, since I like visual novels and you made it sound interesting. It's nice so far.
