Warhammer 40K Discussion
Well, might as well have this here since for some reason we're like, the only forum on the internet that DOESN'T have one.
So, Warhammer thread. Post pictures of armies, either WIP or complete, discuss tactics/army builds, argue about fluff, and of course discuss rumors you hear when they come up (please just mark them as rumors).
So yeah, I guess I'll start.
I play Tyranids, because xenomorphs of godliness. Army isn't complete yet, still being painted up which will take at least another 100 hours of work because I've become obsessed with detail on them, even though my painting talent is basically '3rd grader with watercolors'.
So far, got 8 Genestealers (want more to make some Ymgarl), 3 Warriors (need moar), 16 Termaguants, 16 Homagants, 5 Raveners, 9 Gargoyles (not even enough for 1 unit, I know), 1 Tervigon, 1 Zoanthrope, 1 Mawloc (nom nom nom), and I'm working on making a Parasite of Mortrex for my HQ (because nomnom). Last one slightly pissed me off today because after trimming down parts, gluing them into place and doing a little custom modelling I just learned that APPARENTLY, the Tyranid update in November will come with an actual Parasite model. So basically, unless my sizing is super far off (shouldn't be, fluff says he's warrior sized, so I used that base) I'm going to be using my custom one and telling the official model to fuck off. Plus, cost less muny.
So yeah, there's that. I suppose I could provide some WIP pics of painting and stuff if anyone is interested, but for now I don't has none.

Re: Warhammer 40K Discussion
I've been collecting 40k for years. I haven't bought anything new for over a year now, but I have several thousand points' worth of stuff boxed up that needs building and painting.
I haven't played any games of 6th edition but I might have a go at kill team. I didn't like the way 6th tried to try and simplify stuff even more then completely shake up the core mechanics of shooting and assaulting which wasn't cool and I don't like it. They fixed some of the really broken stuff like the outflank 'I win' button, but I just politely refused to play if my opponent insisted on excessive outflanking lists anyway.
Also it introduced dirt cheap flyers with silly movement mechanics. I've had aircraft since they were first introduced by Forge World and had to make strafing runs in the enemies' turn (so they could shoot at it) before flying off. They were excessively expensive for what you got, so a Raven fighter with armour 10 all round and armed with a twin linked dark lance and what amounted to two storm bolters cost almost as much as a land raider. Now you get a better armoured plane with the same modifier to hit it packing three twin linked lascannons and a huge transport capacity for scarcely more than half that?
Yeah no.
Also you now have to include some kind of AA because every small group of soldiers in the whole stinking galaxy has a plane somewhere, where before they were extremely rare models and expensive in both points and money. I don't want to spend a ton of money adding fluffy AA to my current armies so it irks me.
My first army was Dark Eldar, back in third edition when GW thought it would be a good idea to put them in the starter boxed set with Space Marines. The easiest to play faction put in with the hardest? Luckily they haven't done that again and I learned to play really dirty with them. Tactics stopped working in 4th edition though so I stopped playing with them regularly. I have about 2700 points in total (old edition codex, not entirely sure now with new Forge World flyer rebalances and the new model points costs). It's probably my most competetive army ironically because it sports a pair of flyers which can be used to hunt down enemy flyers if they arrive the turn after they do, despite the army being mediocre on the ground due to new reinforcement rules and a lack of transports.
Then I got a Tau army, which through some lucky bootsale purchases has ballooned to something in the region of 4,500 points including half a dozen railgun hammerheads and a Tiger Shark Ax-1-0. Because of close combat changes in 5th it got sheleved apart from Spearhead games where it would eat other armies for breakfast in huge armoured battles.
After the Tau I got a guard army. I got lucky on eBay right before GW increased the price of a guardsman by 100% in a year so I now have something like 180 regular infantry. I like to play mid sized games as many, many men backed up by a few heavy weapon teams and mortars of varying sizes (thudd guns are amazing). Lacking in heavy weaponry and specialised weapons, this army is hit or miss- able to kill lightly armoured horde armies or small specialised armies like Eldar, but not much in between. In apocalypse they shine, because although I only have two Demolisher tanks, I also own a Hellhammer, Stormlord, old resin Stormsword, pair of Vulture gunships often allowed to use Taros Campaign rules for their air launched ordinance and a Warhound Titan refitted for maximum cheese with a pair of turbolaser destructors (it has killed something like 16 super heavy vehicles without dying in regular apocalypse games, I'm keeping a tally on a piece of paper in the engineering compartment. When it eventually dies that score will be put on a kill-banner).
My final army is a Space Wolf army built using regular marine parts modelled as commandos with temperate camoflage as their colour scheme. They take so long to paint that of a 2000 point collection only one squad is finished. They will eventually be able to go on foot as infiltrators or skirmishers in fluffy homebrew scenarios or go fully mechanised in larger games. the entire army was bought to counter my brother's mechanised guard and tank company because my other armies tend to be balanced towards taking out infantry with some supporting tanks so only have one or two sources of powerful anti-tank firepower which against an armoured column won't last long enough to prove decisive. But perhaps a dozen meltaguns in rhinos will.

Is there a rule somewhere allowing a single player to fields units from different armies in the same battle ? Or is that only reserved to scenario battles ?

Re: Warhammer 40K Discussion
Yes, you can, with some limits. They have a big table of which armies can team up for different scenarios, based on the categories Battle Brothers, Allies of Convenience, Desperate Allies, and Come the Apocalypse.Harmony Ltd. wrote:Is there a rule somewhere allowing a single player to fields units from different armies in the same battle ? Battle Brothers: Have no feud with each other and will happily team up.
Allies of Convenience: If they both have the same goal in a scenario, they'll team up.
Desperate Allies: They'll both be screwed if they don't team up. Ex: Black Templar and Dark Eldar are in battle over a world and have to team up to survive a Tyranid invasion.
Come the Apocalypse: Exactly what it says; they'll work together the day the universe ends.
Even though most of these are limited to Fluff/Canon stuff, some people ignore it and just ally whoever they want so long as their opponent agrees with it. But most of the time, people prefer to stick to the approved alliances.

Does that table exist in the 5th edition rulebook ? I happen to have it, and I'm curious to know in how much a poor standing the various Imperial factions are with each other.

5th Edition did it differently. What I posted above are 6th edition rules. I can't tell you exactly what those rules are, as I don't have a rulebook for 5th.

Re: Warhammer 40K Discussion
I used to play Eldar late 4th-early 5th, never was any good at playing. I also started an IG army but never finished it. The reason I got out of playing was that it required my parents driving me to the local store every time. Now that I'm old enough to drive I really should get back into it but I don't have the money. I love the fluff, except for the new Necron stuff because the previous version was awesome, though I haven't been keeping up with the new stuff.

Re: Warhammer 40K Discussion
Dem new rumors about the Tyranid Codex.
New creatures, new models, new abilities OH MY!
That's right, it looks like the Tyranids will once again be the otherworldly horror they're supposed to be. From more poisonous abilities than you can fathom to the Swarmlord becoming an even more horrible machine of death (+1 attack for every unit in base contact? yes please!) it looks like they're back to being an army that can actually contend with the others.
They're even starting to fall in line more with the fluff, such as letting Warriors join other units as sergeants like the books and codex says they do. Plus it's always fun to make mega-units out of Raveners, Shrikes and Warriors all together.
AND THEY'RE APPARENTLY FIXING THE CARNIFEX! Say 'hello-again' to the wrecking ball and scything tail *maniacal laughter*
And since they weren't big enough before, it's widely confirmed that they're getting a new HQ who is even bigger than their previously biggest unit.
And my personal favorite, the rumored Ravenous Advance rule. Because sometimes it'll be nice to run and assault in the same turn.
Of course it also comes with re-cut models to give more weapons and more varied shapes for the units (so I can actually have all the guns that my army is allowed to have instead of trying to remember who has the special gun). Also, curled tails on Termaguants makes me smile. Fuck you straight tails, and your making it impossible to put my units close to buildings/walls/anything that isn't flat.
And yes, I know that it's possible that none of this will happen, but for a lot of it there are several sources who all have the same info, so some of it I find more possible than others (like the new "Big Bug", that's basically confirmed to be true by every single source I've found). So Yes, hopes are up for me, but since this is Games Workshop we're talking about, I wouldn't be surprised if most of it is bullshit.

Re: Warhammer 40K Discussion
Well, I've finally gotten around to getting pictures of my current work on painting. I've got at least 1 from each unit I have painted up, but it's still a very small amount of the army I've actually got.
And yes, they're blurry as always. Also, ignore the models in the background, they're not done being made yet/I don't have enough to even make a unit yet.
So yeah, there's what I've got done so far.

Re: Warhammer 40K Discussion
Fairly large player going back a bit, started in the early days of 2nd Edition and played until mid-5th edition. I still follow the fluff and Black Library (Dan Abnett) quite a bit. Collected Ultramarines originally because I was a child lacking imagination but eventually swapped to Tau and made a fairly large Army of them with some Gue'Vessa Guard elements that I picked up at Games Day 1998, the special edition Praetorians.
But since the end of 5th and 6th with the rise of "Army of the Week" design choices in GW's studio to make each new army as OP as possible to sell models to hardcore players and their complete lack of attention to their own fluff/feel of each army I started drifting. When the new Codex ruined Tau forever and started having Grey Knights trading with aliens and Blood Angels becoming bros with Necrons that suddenly talked and were more comedy than horror...that was me done.
Now I'm mostly just an Abnett reader and casual watcher until the game hopefully picks itself off the floor again!
Why can't we just have Alessio back? ;_;

SWEET MOTHER OF JESUS' DICK
This is apparently our new transport. I sense porn in the near future. However, I will be getting one as soon as they come out in November because big monster.
We also have an old flyer who finally has a model instead of being forced to make your own. Looks pretty cool.
And finally our new flier who seems to act like an organic fighter jet
And this is apparently the new Tyrant Guard. Personally like the design much more.
Apparently there was more released as far as pics go, but this is all I have been able to get so far. As for rules, apparently they're continuing the raping of nids. Because apparently they don't think we're horrible enough.
LOL LET'S FUCK UP THE ONE SOMEWHAT GOOD TACTIC THAT NIDS GET!
Yeah, they did it, fuck you GW.

I have actually been looking into getting an army. The only problem is that my work schedule doesn't really line up to where I would even be able to play. Not to mention the fact that I am trying to save up some money to move out.
If I did get my own army, I would probably play either Guard, Orks, or Space Wolves.

Oh, GW. You so silly.
Their latest marketing attempt, one of their playtesters saying this about a new model during a game:
"Within minutes, these [models] were providing a strong sense of narrative to our game!"
Basically: BUY THESE BECAUSE THEY MAKE THE GAME HAVE MORE STORY JUST BY BEING THERE!
Honestly, they didn't even need to pull this shit to hype these models either, because they're fucking badass. Might need to buy one because they wrote the rules for it poorly (surprise fuckin surprise), so Tyranids are actually allowed to take them
huehuehue

I and a friend of mine have decided to make our own homebrew overhaul of several codices. Since GW seems to be unable to keep their heads screwed on straight, it may as well be the fans who fix their mistakes. Step one is giving the Orks the anti-vehicle firepower that they need, and balancing out their existing units.
