They put eye inserts in its sockets because the effect is caused when someone looks into 023's sockets. The eye inserts block the sockets from view, so it's effectively harmless until they degrade.swicked wrote:...I don't get it. From what I can tell, it's like a black dog, except you must make eye contact with it for the effect to take place. They said you can't look into it's sockets or the effect still happens, so the rubber is just to block the sockets out.swicked wrote:...I don't get it. As for the glass eyes: From what I understand, when they replaced the missing eyes with glass, everything that was glass became it's eyes, so every screen/window/watch/mirror became what he saw through/what you could make eye contact with.

Ah, 953, if ever a SCP that could be made into a movie I always say the interview would make a good one, if you filled in some of the details of course.
I found the one I was talking about though. It was SCP -1983

Does anyone remember what SCP was the one that if you saw it's face, no matter where you were it would find you and kill you. there was an incident report that was like one guy looked at the picture he took years ago, that he just happened to noticed a spec in the distance and it broke out of containment and killed the guy.

SCP-096. The story on the guy who took the picture and saw it's face years later, all the death to SCP personal is implied to have been done deliberately just so the Foundation would actually try to destroy the damn thing.
Here you go.

It's cool Frost.
I'll be honest and say that I'm cheating. TV Tropes works quite well if you know a specific example is listed somewhere.
1983 was under "moment of awesome" since it's implied the D-class destroyed the nest. 096 is obviously under "nightmare fuel".

Oh yeah, the statue of the God of the Underworld from an ancient religion. If it was ever unwatched it would teleport to the closest person who had looked at it before and kill them.swicked wrote:I think there's a lot like that.Guarddogjr wrote:Does anyone remember what SCP was the one that if you saw it's face, no matter where you were it would find you and kill you. there was an incident report that was like one guy looked at the picture he took years ago, that he just happened to noticed a spec in the distance and it broke out of containment and killed the guy.
I remember one that was a skeleton on a throne that, if you saw it, it would somehow teleport to where you are and crush you.
There was another that was this creature that was really shy or something. If you saw its face it would run straight at you, through anything, to beat the ever-living crap out of you.
They paired it off against the SCP that attacks you when you blink, and again with the one that can recover and evolve to face any challenge, and it lost both times.

Aaahhh, 087. The Keter Cakes.swicked wrote:Oh! Another one I liked: There were these cakes that, if you didn't eat all of one after it appeared, two would appear the next day. The only way to dispose of them was by eating... any other disposal method would result in cake duplication.
They were up to something like 70 cakes that had to be eaten every day.
And wow thank you Moody, I've been trying to think of the name of that report all day!

No problem Talix, glad I could randomly help you out like that.
And I've read that one before Camo but I can't for the life of me remember why it's suppose to be scary. I love the video feed though.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
- Not a rant so much as some belated thoughts:
One thing, though - the argument that someone "just doing their job" shouldn't be held responsible for what that job can lead to doesn't really hold water with me. I mean, if I'm getting paid to commit terrorist acts to increase panic in a nation (I believe this happened in Italy, IIRC), it's my job, ayuh, but it's also still blowing up train stations and killing the innocent. For a closer analogy, what if I'm selling state secrets, or a suitcase nuke? That's still my job - I'm getting paid, just doing my job, just putting proverbial bread on the proverbial table (bread is very expensive these days, y'know, especially if it's proverbial - they mark that right up). Yes, I enabled someone to choose to level New York City, but that wasn't my choice, the argument goes; but the counter response is that you bloody well should have known that this was a distinct possibility, and should be held accountable for having done business anyway, and the law is designed to do just that. I agree that the gas and matches store was a piss-poor analogy, mind you.
(Now, keep in mind that my opinions on this are probably related to my disbelief in the popular version of free will [the notion that there is some decision-making entity inside every human that is neither random nor based in causality].) It is perfectly reasonable to expect people to be responsible in their sales; we have laws on weapons sales for this reason. As we are a law-based society, we can and should punish transgressions of these laws; and if they do not seem to be sufficient at preventing mass murderers from acquiring guns, for instance, then those laws should be changed - strengthened, redirected, what-have-you. People need to be responsible. It's not murder to sell a nuke to a rogue state, but it's hideously irresponsible and should be punished harshly. Ditto with ignoring rules on background checks, or illegally selling guns. Ditto with driving under the influence of alcohol; you may not want to kill anyone, but if you accidentally do, people are less likely to be understanding than if you just cocked up while sober - we, as a society, punish a severe lack of judgment.
As for cigarettes, well, Western justice says that we should tar and feather snake oil salesmen, and that's what cigarette companies used to be. Because it's not the Wild West, and because cigarette companies are technically admitting that they sell poison now (because we make them do so, make no mistakes about that), we apparently have decided to just heavily regulate the industry instead of shutting it down, out of economic and historical concerns (historical meaning, well, we've always had smoking; we can't just ban it! Same reason why it took so long to start legalizing pot, I expect - it's been illegal for so long that it was unthinkable for it to be otherwise, never mind the studies). If cigarette companies are allowed to sell their products, I might well ask why I can't sell morphine over the counter as a relaxant (cut with some arsenic, let's say, to make the comparison apt). People are not in control of themselves when it comes to chemical dependencies, not by any means. Their minds are being altered to want and need these things. It's a bad joke to talk about being responsible for your own actions when a significant part of "you" is an overpowering need for an addicting substance. As well to say that the demented need to be responsible for their own actions, when they can't even remember what year it is. As well to say that victims of domestic abuse need to make the decision on their own to press charges (which is a law in many places, mind you, but preventing this has apparently resulted in a massive reduction in domestic violence in some part of California - heard it on the radio this morning). I'm not one for a nanny state, by any means, but people are not always capable of making competent decisions for themselves, and yes, they bloody well need to be protected when that happens - from themselves, aye, but more importantly from the ones who are taking advantage of them.
Now, as for culture... well, bluntly, people don't just decide out of the blue that they're going to be rapists. To be frank, I don't honestly think that rape jokes are somehow the root of all rape. I don't know where the pernicious idea gets into some people's heads that it's okay to rape someone, under any circumstances. Sometimes, it's punishment - genocides in Africa have often included rape, and many Americans love the idea of rape as long as it's happening to people in prison. Sometimes, it's about power - the rapist feels weak, for whatever reason, and reclaims some sense of authority by raping someone. Sometimes, it's pure entitlement, if you ask me - people thinking that they deserve sex, and not caring about hurting someone else for it; not even thinking about it; thinking of others as objects. Sometimes it's plain old idiocy - a total lack of sexual education, or worse, being told that it's okay. I don't know, I'm not an expert on this, and rape is not a crime I can empathize with, at all. I don't understand it. But, yes, many cultures - ours included - do not regard rape as something indefensible. Fucked if I could tell you why. But there are lines which, if crossed, apparently make it okay to rape you. I'm not gonna pretend that America's not better than most of the world about this, but yeah, it's present here. The phrase "rape culture" is grossly simplistic, because, well, culture is friggin' complicated and prone to change, and there's room for individuality in there, as well as regional differences, and our culture is in many ways extremely anti-rape... you get it. But, at the same time, there are elements - people - who are in our nation, and arguably part of our culture (I don't like being part of the same culture as hill people moonshiners, but we ARE all Americans), who really do think that rape is okay, under some circumstances, and others who really don't take it as seriously as they ought. "Boys will be boys" - bit of an infamous saying, now, but it's an excuse that still holds weight in some places.
(Aside: to be even franker, my brain is a massive bigot when it comes to rape humor. I don't really find rape jokes funny - I thought, anyway - but then, I was watching an episode of Merlin, and I realized that one of the main characters, a guy, was being raped a troll, a lady, and I was finding it hilarious. True, the scene was meant to be funny, and was orchestrated with humor cues, and it wasn't violent (he was under a spell, and she was disguised as someone else), but it was absolutely still rape, and had the gender roles been reversed, the scene would not have been funny to me. Frankly, I doubt a scene like that would ever have been written or filmed, considering that the show is supposed to be family television. Oh, and as for Molestia, the source of why we're talking about this at the moment, I always sort of took it as her being in a weird, Greek god-like BDSM relationship with the entire population of Equestria. Never really read it outside of links to it, though.)
Sorry for all the text, and for any vehemence that might have dripped into this. It's really just me thinking this through, more than a rant (on a related note, apologies for any meandering). I don't have all the answers, or even many answers, about this stuff. Just got what I've got.
@SCP
I remember when this started... Never really got into it heavily, but I spent more than a few hours reading through some of the articles. I think the never-ending staircase one was probably the spookiest for me; dark stairways have featured in several of my old, recurring nightmares.

I was never a huge fan of SCP-682
Also, I really love SCPs that mess with conventional geometry (bigger on the inside things really) like the Cabinet Maze and the Stairwell. Things like the non-Euclidean Portal 2 levels and the TARDIS trigger the same feeling as well.
