So, I installed GOG's client on the PC. So far it's pretty sleek. Haven't tried to install anything from it, yet.
By the way, Scienza, do you know how to add people to your friend list?
(also, apparently, it had been exactly one year since I had last bought something from GOG...)

Just saw the new Mad Max. It was basically a two hour long chase scene, all action, almost no plot. Decent action though, worth seeing in my opinion.

What are you talking about? It had a fantastic plot. Maybe a bit derivative, but perfect for the setting. And the action was fucking phenomenal.
I don't have a hard time saying that it was not only easily one of the best action movies I've seen in years, but also one of the best reboots/sequels ever.

It's just that there were like 10-15 tops that weren't action. Like you said it worked very well for the setting, but for someone expecting more it could be a let down.Tytan wrote:Stringtheory wrote:Just saw the new Mad Max. Well, to be fair, why expect a lot from a Mad Max story?
The first one was a revenge story with a cop protagonist.
The second one was about Max helping a bunch of people run away.
And what the fuck even was the story of Thunderdome?

So, watched the new Mad Max.
I loved it to bits.
I'm probably going to blabber a bit about it later, but for now I'm just going to say that, interestingly enough, the movie pass the Bechdel Test, and not just on a technicality, but honestly.

Kind of strange; how so many fixate on the Bedchel Test when it's actually a pretty terrible measure of how a film treats women

I think it's less about how the movie treats women and more about what gauging what the writers believe that women think. Passing it doesn't really mean much, it's just when something doesn't that things start to go ಠ_ಠFrost wrote:Kind of strange; how so many fixate on the Bedchel Test when it's actually a pretty terrible measure of how a film treats women
Personally, I prefer the Sexy Lamp Test, which is if you could replace your female character with a sexy lamp and have the story still basically work, you need to learn how to write goddamn characters.

Well, yeah, of course.
It's just something I noted and thought to share.
But even without talking about that "test", I think the movie has some kinda strong """feminist""" themes (note that I'm using that term in the vaguest of sense there, please don't try to correct me, thanks).
After all, the primary plot of the movie is "women liberating other women from the shackles of an abusive patriarchal authority".

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Well, yeah, hypothetically if a creator valued women above all else and decided to create a story where woman didn't exist to illustrate their importance that film would still be sexist against women according to that test.
But I personally don't really see the importance of a barometer of sexism, or any other ism or phobia. It really just seems like a way to look down on other people for the media they enjoy.
Only semi related, Just the other day a friend of mine and I were talking about Fifty shades of grey. As evidence to the series being harmful he pointed to people saying the abusive relationship depicted in the book (I haven't read it and I don't really care to. So fuck if I know one way or the other) isn't abusive.
I'll just assume it's true, but you got to consider why they say that. When some people don't like something they don't just stop at saying "x is horrible" they say "X is horrible and the people who like it are horrible" or "x is stupid and only stupid people can like it". So I'm thinking they've been made to feel guilty for the thing they enjoyed, and when some one came along and said "It's horrible that you like it because it contains this bad thing" they no doubt tried to argue it didn't contain the bad thing.
Pretty sure Kim argued that some artist that drew vaginas she didn't like were terrible and so were there fans because they were inaccurate or something.

I fully agree. I don't usually say it because I tend towards hyperbole, but I believe that you can like whatever the fuck you want, or create whatever the fuck you want, it's just that from my subjective perspective, I might dislike said creation. I don't think that Fifty Shades of Grey is actually harmful; I think that the relationships portrayed in the work are abusive, the characters are one-dimensional, and overall, I disapprove of the fact that it exists. Someone can like it, the same way that I like sappy KyoSaya fanfiction or RWBY, I'm just going to quietly (sometimes less so) judge their tastes because I'm a pretentious bitch.Last wrote:Well, yeah, hypothetically if a creator valued women above all else abd decided to create a story where woman didn't exist to illustrate their importance that film would still be sexist against women according to that test.

If I feel that a work has, say, pretty damn misogynist vibes, that's just my appraisal. If that appraisal is reflected by those of others, then one can argue that the work most likely reflects similar themes, but that doesn't really mean shit about the people who watch it unless they filled out a little questionnaire that said that they watched The Wicker Man remake because they think that all women that don't fawn over a man secretly want to burn your children.
The only objectively bad movie is one that's actually a renamed executable file that steals your identity and then bricks your computer. However, there are a fuckton of subjectively bad movies. I think the major problems arise when people conflate the two.

That feel when you dig through your own archives and end up finding excerpt from discarded projects you don't even remember anymore...
Seriously, I'm like, intrigued by what even I had in mind...
- Spoiler:
- A Rough Timeline, Part 2
2965 : After the success of ATS-07's and 08's missions, the enthusiasm toward the current research on FTL, which was already high to begin with, reached new heights. As a consequence, credits started to flow from everywhere, everyone donating to help this once-in-a-specie's-lifetime opportunity to spread our eggs. Creation of the “Foundation”, tasked to coordinate all things related to FTL.
2966 : With nearly infinite resources at their disposal, the Foundation ordered the creation of a dozen exploration ships, taking lessons from all other FTL flights to date and integrating their conclusions in the ship's design. Robust and resilient, they where designed to be able to explore the Galaxy on their own for decades, or even centuries if need be. In the meantime, research to improve FTL-Drives continue, the goal being to Man-Rate them.
2968 : Launch of the “Colombus”, first Explorer-class Autonomous Exploration Ship.
2969 : Launch of the last Explorer-class AES from the Jovian shipyards.
2975 : After the loss in-duty of three of the Explorer-class AES (the “James Cook” being one of them), the Foundation ordered a dozen more ships of a new, improved design, faster and more reliable than their predecessors. Birth of the Pathfinder-class AES.
2976 : Launch of the 12th and last Pathfinder-class AES from the Jovian Shipyards.
2989 : After twenty years of exploration by nearly two dozen AES, all solar systems in a fourty light-years radii around Earth have been thoroughly explored. One earthlike planet, three habitable satellites planetoids, thirteen easily-terraformable planetoids and fifty hardly-terraformable planetoids have been found.
2990 : Start of the Extra-Solar Colonization Initiative. Off the two hundred and thirteen billion inhabitants of the Solar System, more than one billion people volunteer. Design of the first generation Colony Fleet, which will head toward New Earth with several million colonists and uncounted robots to build the first infrastructures of the planet.
[From now on and until the League's establishment, History become uncertain : every colony ship had the whole history of the Solar System in their databanks when they left it, compiled by Earth's prestigious universities ; but in the 4th Millennium the Human Sphere didn't have any real central authority tasked with historical studies at its scale, or those which existed have seen most of their records damaged, expunged or destroyed during the Great War. Earth had the most complete records, but most of it has been lost during the Incident. Only the Hub's University has intact records of the whole period, but sadly, its History Department has always been considered as “some sort of sad joke” (in the words of one of the Department's most respected Researcher)]

In think this may be related:
One of my standard "big wars happen and thousands of billions die" kinda setting...
I quickly noticed that trend after realizing that I often tended to have Earth destroyed for one reason or another in my stories, often in especially spectacular ways (*)
(*): one of them involved having an asteroid the size of a small moon being deorbited from earth orbit and THEN the vacuum energy reactors that were in that asteroid detonating, literally melting the planet back to its original, 4.5-billions-years-ago state. The whole incident being recorded from thousands of different angles from all the other orbital & moon colonies. If you thought 9/11 was bad...
- Spoiler:
- Additional information :
The Great War
I've said before that the Great War ended roughly two thousands years before the current date, with the creation of the League. But I haven't talked of the Great War itself yet. Let me correct this.
First, you have to understand the context of the time : It was the 5th millennium, and mankind had left the cradle of the Solar System less than a thousand year before. In this time Man had spread in an anarchic manner, taking up every space available it could reach, without any supervision. As always, tribalism quickly emerged, and Mankind's greed and envy allied to its never ending lust for conquest to create hundreds of competing Space Empires. Predictably, these empires came into conflict ; diplomatic, at first, but in a number of case the situation escalated to open armed conflict.
Five hundred years after Man had left the Solar System, the young Human Sphere was riddled with conflict and struggle. As a mean to survival in these troubled times, the space empires that composed the Sphere allied between themselves, slowly forming important power blocks. These blocks, in turn, merged, to form bigger and bigger blocks, in order to counter the other blocks that where themselves becoming bigger and bigger. This trend continued for three hundred years, in the same time as the Human Sphere continued to expand. At the end of this period, remained only two opposing power blocks, and a few independent powers standing in the middle, that the two Powers where trying to influence to their “cause”. This situation lasted for seventy years, a time during which the Powers invested themselves in a ruinous arm race. The weapons of this age truly were awe-inspiring, hulking space colossus reminiscent of the Battleships of old in their gigantism and raw firepower ; siege engines specialized in planetary bombardment ; whole Worldships dedicated to war... The martial heritage of this period is mostly lost to history, most of it in the flames of War, the rest seeing truth mostly indistinguishable from legend.
The chronic do not tell us who struck first, or why. It doesn't matter. The Human Sphere suddenly ignited in War, as five hundred years of hidden tensions, petty grudges and bitter resentments came to the surface.
Sides were switched, backs were stabbed, worlds were turned to ash as the conflict quickly escalated to cover the whole of the Human Sphere.
The detailed chronicle of this period would take whole libraries worth of books to cover, so let us only say that this period of generalized Total War lasted for a hundred year, which spiked with the Campaign of a Hundred Worlds, and ended with the final dissolution of the two blocks, no one of their members still being able to trust their so-called “allies”. Followed another fifty years of warfare, as revenges were settled and “borders” were retraced in the blood of the innocent and not-so-innocent.
When the dust settled, the Human Sphere understood that it could never allow what happened in the last century-an-a-half to ever happen again. It is in this spirit of “Never Again” that the League was created. The signature of the League's Treaty in the ruins of Old Earth, which the war hadn't sparred, is seen as the official end of the Great War.

Or... really any of it. All the damage Smooze caused in the meantime. Discord disposing of Rarity's dress after she got gooed, too.
There's nothing in-universe to justify her actions. I'd be kinda okay with her magic not working against the monster, but her attitude toward the whole thing was just too much.
I don't think I like her anymore.
I guess that just leaves Zecora, now. Hopefully she'll get an episode eventually and it won't be awful.
- Spoiler:
- I've had real problems with her for a long time. It really doesn't help that that one point could have easily been solved like this:Discord the Chaos Spirit
c/o Fluttershy
Fluttershy's cottage, Ponyville, Equestria
I continue not to like Discord since his return, and I have to say that this episode would have worked better in season four, maybe between "Three's a Crowd" and "Twilight's Kingdom", but probably better yet before "Three's a Crowd."
On the plus side, Fluttershy continues to be better than she's been in years, and I did like the Smooze in itself. But most of the episode was just unbearably uncomfortable to watch.
