Sooo...this semester, for another 3 credits out of the 21 for Core Extension for IS&T that I'm bloody required to take, I'm taking Intro to Game Design. The course teaches some of the basics of game design, programming, and graphics, as well as how it's done on the hardware level.

The major part of my grade is from a project: I have to make a game. I don't know the specific requirements yet - that probably won't come until we've covered all the basics. I'm guessing something that shows a reasonable amount of time and effort, and is probably good for two, maybe three levels. I am making this post because I have absolutely no clue what I am going to make (and I'm throwing pony-related off the table). I'd like to fish for ideas from y'alls. (And maybe artwork/sprites later if you're feeling generous enough, but don't feel compelled to). I'll post it here when it's complete so you guys can have fun with it if you want.

Disclaimer: All programming is done for the GBA platform. Also, I'm new to this, so it's not gonna be hyper flashy, or have 3d thingamajiggits. It's a portable SNES.

Here's some reading material if you're interested: http://www.coranac.com/tonc/text/

Potentially a simple 2D fighting game? As for help, I'd be glad to offer some voice acting if you'd like.

Sweet, thanks. Twilight Sparkle you should take a quick look at that link if you haven't already so you can get an idea on how you should be doing the artwork.

A 2D fighting game would be dynamic and probably easy to animate, but there's a major problem: I really, REALLY don't want to go into developing the AI for it. That'll just become a nasty mess, what I end up developing will be basic and not a challenge at all, and I'll still be juggling a Software Engineering project, an 18 page (single spaced) Technical Writing report and presentation, and a 10 page paper and a presentation for my internship on top of this around the time I start development. So I want to keep this as simple as possible, but still good enough to impress the instructor. I'll keep you in mind for voice acting should the need arise, though.

I think you've got something here. I do like puzzle games. It could be an overhead view sort of thing. Tiled maps would be easier to design. Sprite AI wouldn't need to be too complicated. And I got an idea for an goal to work towards after working on my latest assignment. Tentacles, though? Well, it's certainly different, but ehhhh...

Any other ideas you've come up with, though? Or does anyone else have some ideas/suggestions?

In my defense inspiration comes from weird places, I thought the joke about a tentacle game being completely non pornographic was a funny one.

Have you thought about making a card game? Effects and animation would be minimal and really all you would have to worry about is the mechanics. Maybe you could make a card game where the theme was bomb diffusal and each player starts with a limited pool of time, when the timer reaches zero game over, Whenever their turn starts they have to choose to think about their moves or quickly end their turn.

Maybe the cards would be invisible when it wasn't their turn so they couldn't as easily plan out their moves between turns.
