Actually I'm certain that X-com base invasion can happen without Progeny. You won't get the answer of just HOW they managed to pull off the super mind control, but it can still happen provided you do the alien base mission.

I mean, it can only happen AFTER the base events.

Yeah that makes sense with how the story line goes.
Sucks since now you're OP for those missions, but I tend to do the Alien Base by late May/early June since I need breathing room for the world wide panic.
